One of our favorite kid's books

One of our favorite kid's books! Pre-read it, so you can use fun voices for the Grimble Grinder and the Mars Men when you read it to your child! My kids loved it, and the kindergartenrs and older preschoolers at my child care center were totally enthralled when I read it to them. I even invented a recipe and made "brussels sprout noodle bean casserole" and served it to my kids, with Moon Pies for dessert, of course!

Great book. Shipping unsatisfactory.

It is a fantastic story with characters that are brought to life with beautiful illustrations. That said. This hard cover book arrived in a mailing envelope with minimal packing material. The paper cover was badly torn in several places and the hard cover was bent. The corners smashed and mangled. Not enough time to exchange. So was forced to present it as a baby shower gift minus the ruined paper cover, in its mangled condition. Sad face.

Book for Adventerous Boys

This is a really fun book especially if you have an adventerous boy at your house! We found this book at the library & decided we had to make it a member of our family because the main character Jimmy is one of my sons to the tee! It is a fun book about a little boy who likes to create, invent, dress up, imagine & have out of this world adventures- he also likes moon pies! In the end the day is saved by burping so if you are easily offended by bodily noises pass it up- otherwise enjoy! It also has lots of outrageous & fun to say words & phrases which make reading it outloud real fun! The content of the book is 5 stars! I gave it a 4 because I was a little disappointed in the size of this paperback version. After being introduced to the library copy this small book (stories to go) is a let down because this is a huge adventure with great illustrations & lots of little details to see so you really need a bigger size book to capture the full effect. On the other hand, the price is low.

Best Boy Book Ever

Purchased this book about 3 years ago and my children still want me to read it all of the time.

The illustrations are detailed and fun. And the story really appeals to their imagination. What if we really could fly to the moon, talk to Mars Men and conquer our fear of big Grumbling Monsters?!

Jimmy has the best vocabulary, "Gadzooks!" "Aw, Nuts!", which really lends itself to some excitement when read aloud.

I've taken the book into school for story time many times. Every time, the whole class was mesmerized.

Great book

I was born and raised in Germany, and this has always been one of my all time favorite books,

from one of my all time favorite authors. Being a twin, this story has always intrigued me, and

I was always grateful that my parents never divorced. I am now 60, and have lost both parents,

but this book will always be part of my history and my connection to my mom.

Very happy with my book!

Ein ausgezeichneter erster wirklicher deutscher Roman

An A level challenge based on a vocabulary of approximately 600 words, Easy Readers has created an interesting, challenging read appropriate to second year students of the German language. The difficulty level at which the publishers have set this abridged and modified version of Erich Kästner's classic children's novel is perfect. The first couple of chapters seem heavy going indeed and the easily discouraged student, forced to resort to a dictionary on numerous occasions might be tempted to set the book aside as simply beyond his or her capabilities. But the more persevering student soon discovers (as I did to my surprised delight) that he or she is reading (slowly, to be sure) but without the assistance of any dictionary at all and relying solely on context to determine the meaning of never before seen words and brand new colloquial German sentence structures.

What's even better is that âDas doppelte Lottchenâ, as the basis for the well-known English story, "The Parent Trap" is a REAL story with real emotions and real outcomes. I found that I was enjoying reading the story for its own sake ... NOT just because I was assigned the reading as part of a German class.

Highly recommended.

A Happy Review!

Joyce Meyer's "Every Which Way to Pray," is a great book for children today.

Characters so fun and delightful, bring to light what can seem frightful.

Down on their level kiddos will understand prayer is easy to do from any place or land.

They will see how fun it is to pray to God; to tell Him all their cares and dreams without a nod.

Beautifully illustrated to help them learn how to spend time with God at every turn.

You won't be disappointed to pick up this book, for it will make you smile when you take a look!

Thanks Joyce and Mary for this wonderful book on prayer. My 6 year old granddaughter has been attending church with me since she was 2 months old and loves it. She participates in our Children's department in the "Studio K" program where they learn about God and are taught about making good decisions in their life. I saw this book on Amazon and it was the perfect book for her to read at this point in her life. She prays with me at bedtime when she sleeps over and it is a precious time. This book has made it more meaningful for her to understand how easy it is to speak to God. Thanks so much for the wonderful teaching.

Additionally, the pictures by Mary Sullivan are great fun! All of the characters are portrayed so well in her artwork. This really helps to bring the lesson to life for our young ones. My granddaughter was captivated by both the words and pictures and I feel that this has been a great help to her.

Love it

Not necessary

This was required summer reading for my son going into 1st grade in Catholic school. I thought it would be nice and while I agree with the sentiment, I found it to be drawn out and the characters annoying. My son, who usually enjoys reading, became bored with it. Bottom line-- you don't need a wordy picture book to teach this idea to your child, and if it hadn't been required, I wouldn't ever buy it.

I can not say enough about this book. My 6yr old grand daughter just loves the book and it is helping her to understand exactly what praying to GOD is all about. It is written in such a cute style and holds the attention while reading it. It is soooo cute and Joyce did a wonderful job. Recommend this book 100%...you won't be disappointed!

It inspired my aspiring artist

This latest edition to the Fancy Nancy series was a big hit in our home. My four-year-old daughter, who has really taken off in her artwork these past few weeks, enjoyed this book immensely. In fact, she was so inspired by the story that she drew her own version of "Tulips in the Wind"! I would have to say that it is one of my favorites of the Fancy Nancy stories we have read (and we own 90% of them). I give it 4 out of 5 stars, though, because I think the book could have introduced more artists than just the four (Degas, Monet, Matisse, and Pollock) that were touched on and I think it would have been nice if the style/period of each artist was discussed (ie. Monet is one of the impressionists). Perhaps it is asking too much to incorporate that in a 32 page story for 4 - 8 year olds but that is what I felt was lacking in this book.

Otherwise, I think the story itself is nicely written. While Bree is on vacation for a week, Nancy occupies herself by building an art clubhouse in the backyard and trying out various styles of art each day, even touching on what it is like to have a creative block. Nancy, Robert, and Bree host an outdoor art gallery at the end of the week to display the artwork (mostly Nancy's) that they have created during their week of art exploration.

As for the previous reviewer who did not like the "smaller" size of the book, this is not one of the $17 big books like the original or _Posh Puppy_. This one is the same size as more recent stories like _Explorer Extraordinaire_, _Ooh la la! It's Beauty Day!_, or _Poet Extraordinaire_. These are my favorite size in the series. I think Jane O'Connor writes more "story" in this size (there is definitely more to read per page) and typically provides a good dose of information on the topic being explored.

Another great Fancy Nancy story!!

I love get these books for my nieces- the illustrations are fantastic and the stories are so sweet. I purchased this one for my 2yo niece who recently started an art class and she loves it!! I love the fact that they show actual images of famous works from various well known artists- This book has elements for the younger kids through the older ones with some of its artist references and content. I know this will be a book she will continue to enjoy even as she gets older!

Make Sure It's Age Appropriate

As a poet myself, I was very excited to see this new Fancy Nancy book. I also have a daughter named Nancy, so all of the Fancy Nancy titles find their way into our collection. Still, some titles go over better with my daughter than others. This one is a harder sell than some of the others.

The main reason, I think, is that my Nancy is only just turned 4 and this title, though listed for ages 4 - 7, is a bit difficult. It takes the concepts of poetry (like rhyme, inspiration, writer's block, etc.) very seriously which I like. It also offers some very high level example of poetry and poetry styles which, again, I like. Still, it makes the going harder for a young girl who is looking mainly for a fun story at bedtime. Given a choice, my Nancy prefers the simpler, more story-oriented tales.

Still, I think in time my Nancy will really come to appreciate this book. It is a good introduction to poetry with a fun guide in the guise of Nancy Clancy. For now, I will put it aside and try it again later.

Fancy Nancy, Poet!

As a poetry-lover from my youth, I've eagerly awaited the arrival of this newest "Fancy Nancy" book to give to my 6 year old granddaughter, Mary Mace. She has every book in this series and adores them all. As fate would have it, the book arrived a week before my daughter (Mary Mace's mother) was to teach about poetry to her 4th grade class! She read the book to Mary Mace and was so inspired by the idea of the "poet-tree" made by Nancy's teacher, Mrs. Glass, that she made one for her own class. She made the trunk of the tree from the class's poems, the leaves were related vocabulary words, and she added acorns with her comments. The tree was such a huge hit that almost every other teacher in the school 'borrowed' the idea from her!! She told them how great "Fancy Nancy" is and how much she's helped our Mary Mace to develop an advanced vocabulary for a kindergartener. I'd like to thank Ms. O'Connor and the amazing illustrator, Ms.Robin Preiss Glasser, for such consistently fabulous work. These books will not only entertain your children, but will also teach them new and exciting words.

We bought this book after checking it out from the library and loving it. It is educational, a lot of fun, and very engaging. I recommend this book to anyone, adult or child, who appreciates poetry. It is great for homeschoolers!

An American Classic

Poetry is not widely appreciated as an art form in the United States, certainly not to the extant that it is in Britain. Nevertheless, the US has produced some first-rate poets who rank with the very best. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was among those, and "The Song of Hiawatha" was among his finest works. Longfellow has been rather neglected in recent decades, even among his own countrymen. However, his works, and especially this one, are well worth a reappraisal.

Most people are vaguely familiar with Longfellow's "The Song of Hiawatha", at least the subject matter. However, most are not aware of how long this epic poem is, or how good it actually is. Longfellow supposedly borrowed the distinctive metrical style of "The Song of Hiawatha" from an ancient Finnish epic poem, the Kalevala. Wherever he got the idea from, it certainly works very effectively in this context. "The Song of Hiawatha" is a poem that simply begs to be recited aloud, like a chant.

Some experts have criticized this work for not being a sufficiently accurate depiction of the Native American lore from which it was derived. However, "The Song of Hiawatha" is not a work of anthropology, but a work of poetry, and ultimately should be judged on it's merits as such.

A fantastic fantasy Native American epic!

The Song of Hiawatha by Henry Longfellow showcases his prowess in making romantic American literature. It follows the story of Hiawatha, a mythical heroic Native American figure created for the book, and his adventures and trials which he endures for furthering the lives and knowledge of the tribes around him.

While the historical accuracy is debatable this is a must read for anyone interested in the lore of Native American culture.

At the conclusion of the story of Hiawatha, there is also contained a few short poems by Henry Longfellow that showcase his poetical abilities. The last one is an excellent read for those of the Christian faith.

Worth the time

I found this interesting, but had to keep in mind that it's a romanticized version of Native Americans and subsequent colonization of their land. I am also uncertain whether the terminology and mythology are purely inventions of the author. Yet I'm glad to have become familiar with one of our country's early poets, and he does spin an exciting yarn, easy to read with its familiar rhythm. No wonder my kid brother had little trouble memorizing a stanza for class! I skipped the poems after Hiawatha. I think any well read person would enjoy Longfellow's Hiawatha.

My new look at Hiawatha

As a young girl I was introduced Longfellow's great poem (story) and had to memorize a part of this great piece. I thought that was all there was to the "Song of Hiawatha". Years later, I happened to find out there was much more to the Hiawatha story, I found out it is quite long, a virtual book of 80 plus pages! Reading it now, I appreciate the lovely story of Hiawatha's life Longfellow told in this "sing-song" type poetry (my description). I am happy I found it so easily at Amazon.

Would you listen to Los Gatos Black on Halloween again? Why?

Again and again and not just on Halloween. The combination of velvety voice, sound effects and music is marvelous.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The fantasy story itself with all it's lushly embroidered detail was my favorite character.

What does Maria Conchita Alonso bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

She brings you right into the middle of the monstrous spooky night! Whispering and howling and all the wonderful emoting. I love it!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I like the comic relief after the suspenseful, creepy build-up.

Any additional comments?

The story is wonderfully written and very clever. It was nice to have a few words from the author herself after the story. The illustration from the hard copy capture the mood of the story, and this audio book narrator further fleshes it out for the reader. Truly remarkable and beautifully rendered in audio book. I'll recommend it to friends and family for Halloween parties and sleepovers. The kids and grown ups alike love this one.

One of my all time favorites as a kid so now I shared it with my nephew<3

Stunning Illustrations

The kids were mesmerized by the illustrations. It is a good thing that the retelling of this tale is well done, otherwise the illustrations could easily overpower and diminish the prose.

This is a classic, but I keep it in a special place to hand out as a reward for a job well done in the classroom. The kids can't just go up to the bookshelf and take it out during silent reading or choice time because a tug of war over turns or who got it first is inevitable. I don't want a torn book as the result of their loving the it.

This is a wonderful story in its own right taken to a whole new level with these illustrations. I think an art teacher could create several inspiring lessons based upon these illustrations. Highly recommend.

Teamwork and senses

This book has great illustrations and is a handy tool for kids learning about teamwork or their five senses, particularly touch. The seven blind mice take the entire book trying to figure out what a particular object is. They all think that this object (an elephant) is something different depending on where they touch it and it takes all of them to figure out what it is. Engaging for kids age 3-6 or so.

It is an entertaining book that my 20 month old grandson will actually sit to have read to him.
