Lies of Light picks up from where Whisper of Waves left off. Set on the shores of the Lake of Steam, in the port city-state of Innarlith, the book describes the (rather dull) story of mainly five characters: two engineers from Cormyr, Willem Korvan and Ivor Devorast, a Red Wizard of Thay named Marek Rymut, a young noblewoman, part-time rogue, and native of Innarlith named Phyrea, and Pristoleph, a fire genasi (!), as they go about their respective business in the city of Innarlith.

The book starts off very well with chapter 1 and then it's downhill all the way to chapter 32 on page 145 (almost half way through) where it picks up again... As in the case of Whisper of Waves one immediately feels the difference in mood compared to other Forgotten Realms (FR) novels, especially the older ones; this is definitely not your second edition era FR novel!

The plot continues to swerve all over the place and to a great extent fails to keep the reader's interest and attention. Philip Athans once again seems to have a grasp of essential knowledge relevant to Faerun, but doesn't do much with it. Other drawbacks include the ongoing dryness vis-à-vis the main characters, which makes reading the novel all too often so very boooooring!!! Due to the characters being weak, delusional, and self destructive, the reader does not care for them, feeling frustrated instead.

Moreover, the Zhentarim's sudden and short lived appearance failed in its goal to raise interest and because it was so badly done it had the opposite effect; I never thought I would ever feel disdain at the appearance of the Black Network.

Furthermore, the black dragon Insithryllax in both Whisper of Waves and Lies of Light is clearly lawful evil and not chaotic evil as it should be.

In addition, there are inconceivable spelling mistakes throughout the book that indicate poor performance all around, such as on pages 74-75 where it should read "an ounce" not "an once of political ambition," "handle" instead of "... the axe handl" (p.101), "Civility" instead of "Civilityh" (p.173), and "Red Wizard" not "Red Wizards" (p.204), while the last word in the first line of Chapter 32 should be "she" and not "he" (p.145).

That said, Philip Athans provides in Chapter 1 an extraordinary description of undead at work: "The ghast took another bite, a mouthful of bloody skin from the dead man's thigh. It came off with a tearing sound, duller than fabric...

I loved every minute

after first encountering cormyr in few of elminsters books, and hearing of royal magician. I was interested to hear their stories. this final chapter delivered anticipated ending, but the road there was full of excitement and I'm glad I listened to this.

Four Stars

Fresh approach for an FR novel.

Another classic.

Richard Baker and R.A. Salvatore are the best Forgotten Realms authors. Every time I read another of their works it serves to affirm that they are indeed the best. This is a great story, although I think it could use a couple more novels to support it.

Not bad at all

I gave this book four stars because it didn't wow me. It was a good read for a standalone story and would definitely read more from this story line if they were to follow.

Such an underrated title

I first read this book well over a decade ago, and the story has always stuck with me. Aeron's journey over the course of many years is vivid and detailed, and his interactions with the Elven mage Fineghal is especially magically (no pun intended, really). Baker's writing is immersive and wonderfully descriptive. I know I'm enjoying a book when I'm completely absorbed for the course of the entire read and frequently have goosebumps, especially years after the first read.

Beware of Shadow Magic...

Shadow Stone deals with a neglected part of the Realms: the Old Empires and specifically the land of Chessenta (located south of the Sea of Fallen Stars).

The book sheds light on Aeron, a commoner out of Maerchlin, a town found within Akanax's sphere of influence, and his quest of fulfilling his lifelong dream of becoming a powerful wizard.

The plot as a whole is excellent. The book is very well written and the reader feels that they have been transported to another plane of existence and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense. Richard Baker does a fairly good job of presenting the distinct culture and civilization of the peoples of Chessenta, though more research is needed in order to provide a fuller, more accurate and lucid description of the region's inhabitants. What it comes down to is that the book lacks that strong Ancient Greek style/flavor associated with Chessenta.

On the negative side, the book does have several significant flaws e.g. the king of Akanax is Hippartes (human male LN Fighter 19) not Gormantor.

Moreover, on page 284 Aeron says he will lose his invisibility if he tries to magically open a locked door. This is not true since only an offensive spell would dispel his invisibility; meaning an actual magical attack against a foe.

In addition, the deaths of both Crow/Samir and Fineghal took place as if both were novices, first level characters (!!!); one arrow (!!!) was enough to dispose of the Master of Invocation, while one thrown dagger (!!!) was enough to render the ancient elf helpless so as to be stabbed to death by commoners??? Hmmm...

A Taste of the Realms

Book 1 is good as a stand alone novel. Book 2 really feels like D&D.

Worth a read if only to see how the Forgotten Realms mythos is starting to open up wide. Planes of existence and the vastness of the continent of Faerun are hinted at. Kazgaroth was actually a minion of Bhaal(The God of the act of death) who lives on the plane of Gehenna. The EarthMother is an aspect of Chauntea(Goddess of agriculture and growth). The black wizards Cyndre and Alexei were trained in Thay. The assassins of Calimshan. It will be interesting to read the subsequent changes to the Realms as the game series transitions from v2 to v3. The sahuagin here worship Bhaal. By the time of Mel Odom's Threat from the Sea they all worship Sekolah.

The evil wizards here are truly evil. All parts with them were highlights for me. One is even a sado/nymphomaniac. Hobarth the cleric is pretty bad ass. The zombie/druid battle for the grove is worthy too.

Monsters aplenty! We have a half orc, duergar, zombies, skeletons, ogres, sahuagin, the invisible servant and earth elementals. There's a wood sprite too. Really? Re-really(annoying).

My only real complaint is some of the setup in the book is way too forced or just doesn't make much sense. For example, when the Prince and Daryth lose their weapons at sea only to have them magically returned in Caer Allisynn I face palmed at the lameness of it all. Pontswain was there too btw. Why couldn't he get his weapon back? Then there was "Robin Hood" O'Roarke. Really now?

Good books

Great read

Moonshine Trilogy

These were great stories, with great characters. Each book had an ending, which I like a lot! This may be because the books are older, but to me it shows a love for the storyline more than the money it will make.

The battles and magic are great, though there were some heart-breaking losses, making it all the more realistic. The monsters and evil villains are creative and easily visualized, as are the heroes.

As the first trilogy of a world of multiple authors, Forgotten Realms got a GREAT start!

Great Series of books

Loved this entire series and thought this was one of the best three book adventure since Lord of the Rings. I would recommend this series to anyone who loves Fantasy and suspense.

Good Stroy

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

The story is good, but the performance, well... Since it is about a girl, I would have enjoyed the performance better if a woman read this story. I felt the reader rushed through the book so I found it hard to relax and listen. If I was listening to this while I was running instead of to relax after work maybe I would have liked the performance better..

Lacking

The book had great potential. It has unique characters, a great structure for the family it's centered around, and a little comic relief. But as a whole this book seemed more like an introduction to a bigger story. But as I understand it, it's a stand alone novel.

Great Story

I had a great time with this story. The only drawback was the narration. At times he rushed through the whole story. He didn't really have any inflection while narrating the story which I think took a lot away from the great scenes dispersed through out the book. He had no emotion in his narrative at all, it was very brisk and business-like. Almost like he just narrated for the cash, not so much for the performance. Just download the book. It's a better experience. I would like to see a series made out of the heroine's travels. Is there more to this story?

T. David Rutherford voice is WAY TOO fast...it's awful without much variation. Better to read the book. The story is good, inventive.

I've looked for hours in this new Audible D&D section to find a book that is NOT the romance and/or psychiatrist-notes-collected-on-the-neurotics (er, I mean, characters) stuff that nearly all Fantasy (Middle Ages tech/culture/myths) novels seem to have been warped into lately.

Nearly all Ive found so far seemed likely to be the above, or else in the right ballpark but SO HEAVY and WEIGHTY. The kingdom will fall, all magic everywhere will die, the world (and universe) is gonna DIE unless this band of heros yada yada yada.

I was kind of hoping this new D&D subgenera had escaped the plague. It seems to me that D&D novels should be more like what we had in mind when playing it, if we did. A story about a band of adventurers, operating entrepreneurially, who sometimes also take up a mission if the pay is right or a partner is captured. Movies like Conan the Barbarian, Pirates, or in SCI-FI, Serenity (before the crew gets caught up the govt and zombies thing). Or like the TV series Highlander, Hercules, or Zina.

Absolutely Amazing!

What a wonderful Book. I recieved it, and read it cover to cover all in the same day! I don't usually do that, but what a damn good book.

This story is centered around Sara Dunstan, whom is still grieving over her adopted son Steel Brightblade three years after the summer of chaos. In the begining, she is living as a exile from the Knights of Tahkisis, and is pretty miserable. Then she starts having some dreams that call to her for help. Eventually, she sets out to find the source of the dreams and comes upon a wounded and riderless blue dragon whom she nurses back to health.

Thats all I'm telling you about this book. But It was page turning. I just added Mary H Herbert, to the list amazing Dragonlance storytellers, right under Richard A Knaack, whom we all know is the best. I Cannot wait to learn more about the "Leigon Of Steel" which is founded in the end of this work!

What's Not to Love?

Legacy of Steel is by far one of the best books ever written for the Dragonlance Saga. Mary Herbert has taken a minor charcacter, Sara Dunstan and turned her into one of the most compelling and interesting charcacters ever to grace the pages of the dragonlance world. We see a relationship of trust, care, and understanding between a dragon and a human which has never before been discribed. Herbert balances the story with the action and intrigue immaculately. You really can feel the emotion of all the characters and the bond between Sara and Cobalt. My only complaint, the book was too short. I wanted more. I only hope Herbert writes more Dragonlance novels, especially involving Sara and Cobalt.

Decent, but nothing to rave about

Unlike the first book in this series (Chris Pierson's SPIRIT OF THE WIND), this book doesn't have a compelling plot that draws the reader into the book. There is a bare semblance of a plot, but nothing truly engaging. It's about Sara Dunstan's (Steel Brightblade's foster mother) infiltration of the regrouped Knights of Takhisis. Herbert tells this story with no real goal observable to the reader. There is an ultimate goal of the book, but it's really just to set up a story element that will appear in subsequent books in the Dragonlance universe.

The big redeeming quality of this book is the character of Sara Dunstan. Readers were first introduced to her in Weis & Hickman's THE SECOND GENERATION and we saw more of her in their DRAGONS OF SUMMER FLAME. This book fleshes here character out much more than those two did.

I've always been a fan of stories involving elves, and the Icewall Trilogy has given me a new view of them. This book features the same characters as The Messenger, mainly Kerrick Fallabrine and Moreen Bayguard. I was hoping to see some romantic involvement between them, but no dice, though there were some hints. The book was centered around the ogres' plot to destroy Brackenrock completely with the golden orb, an explosive device created by the alchemist, whose origins are eventually revealed. Kerrick learns some interesting information about the fate of his parents, and Moreen has changed quite a bit since The Messenger. I liked this book a lot, but I wish I knew when the third one was going to be released.

Straightforward and Entertaining Adventure

The Golden Orb is fantasy I like - straightforward entertaining fantasy adventure. Sometimes we need books like these, uncomplicated by political intrigue so rife in fantasy books these days (Eg. The Game of Thrones). Some say this simplicity sacrifices story quality, but I see nothing like this here!

The Golden Orb continues after The Messanger. I'm a little dissapointed that we did not see much of Kerrick's character developing and am stuck with yet another 'save the Arktos' adventure. So let's hope that the final book will see Kerrick returning to Silvanesti and showing those snobbish elves what he's made of.

Great second book in trilogy

Set eight years after the first book in the trilogy, this is an excellent fantasy novel and part of a terrific trilogy. It answers a lot of questions from the first book and develops the familiar characters even further. Readers do not need prior exposure to the Dragonlance world to enjoy this book. And don't stop here, the final book in the trilogy (Winterheim) is excellent as well!

Narrator's voice gets in the way of the story.

Sounds like everyone in Eberron has a slight Irish accent. Darker characters have either the high pitch witch or the deep menacing voice.

Great Introduction to Eberron

This feels like the world that I've been waiting to read about for years! Finally, a world that combines fantasy and sci-fi in a very Final Fantasy-esque way, one where the magic integrates into the technology while keeping the magic part mysterious. Its sci-fi elements lean a bit towards steampunk, but still this is very much a fantasy world. Eberron is the kind of place I could really get into knowing more. The descriptions make me long to play the game, or better yet, to see if depicted in movies or video games. Incorporating autonomous sentient robots and airships powered by magic - yes, please, and keep it coming!

This was my first exposure to the world, so from the beginning it had me really glued to the story to learn what was happening in the world. It's clearly very different from other D&D such as Forgotten Realms while still paying strong homage to that series. But I like the development of the society and the focus on character development. I enjoyed reading about the main characters, and the plot kept me interested and eager to find out what was coming next. Still, though the story itself is pretty interesting, it's the unveiling of the world that really shines. In the book's second half the plot does lose some of its originality, but overall it was enjoyable right up to the end.

I'm currently listening to the Dreaming Dark series, which is even better than this. But, I do hope to return to finish this trilogy also in the future.

Good pulp, uneven narration

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend it to someone who reads fantasy, and likes a pulp-style story. A reader who has any interest in the setting, a fantasy 1920s/30s spun partially from our world and partially from fantasy tropes, will like it even more.

What other book might you compare Voyage of the Mourning Dawn to and why?

There has to be steampunk out there that has parallels for this, but I don't know the genre well enough to cite an example.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Marcella Rose Sciotto?

I'm not sure. She shows a fair range of vocal characterization, but as someone else said she mispronounces a noticeable number of words-- some ordinary English, some that are place or character names, important to help a listener make sense of what's going on. I don't care how clumsy the splices are; I'd have liked more of them, to get rid of those errors.(The text itself isn't perfect either. A satisfying finish.

I enjoyed all three books of the trilogy and this one wrapped up the story pretty well. I really liked the different take on Hobgoblins and Goblins. It was nice to see them portrayed as more than just mindless killing machines.

I read a lot of books

Most of the Forgotten Realms or D&D books I read are the same in that they are fine and good for passing the time. I find it's necessary to know all the background info in order to understand the next book that comes out. It was good, not excellent.

Well written, not rushed like most trilogy books seem like now a days. Wraps all the unanswered questions. Must read. I cannot wait for the continuation series!
