Magic swords, an evil uncle, untamed dragons, epic battles
You swing a staff until you're ready to swing a sword. Then you go on all kinds of adventures - fighting monsters, casting spells, and saving damsels in distress. At least that's how it's supposed to work, but I didn't believe a word of it.
Fantasy adventure for dragon fans of all ages
Two forms of power - natural and chemical - divide the world. Dragons, who keep the chemical power in check, have long retreated from human sight; few still believe in them. Inside a castle surrounded by Tuscan hills more and more threatened by chemical forces, 16-year-old Anders lives a sheltered life. But much as his parents try, Anders can't avoid the forces that threaten....

    Can't wait for next installment
This series appears to be written for a younger audience however adults should enjoy it as well. I loved the main character's "thought processes" as he tries to work through the various ways in which his world is turned upside down overnight. While not quite cliff hangers, it is obvious that each ending in the first two books are setting up for a continuation of the story. I enjoyed the world building and will be looking for the next installment. The audiobook version made this an engaging tale. It is well done.
    Disappointed
First, I love dragon stories, but this one the; writing, the narrator, the story line was pointed definitely towards pre-teens and maybe very early teens. But that I could deal with, what I can't deal with is that this is not the end. I won't be spending a credit for the (LOL) 4 hour next book to find the next episode or conclusion to such a predictable battle of good verses evil.
    Struggling to finish
narrator sounds the same for all characters. pretty much monotone.
my first thought was he reminds me of Gilbert Godfrey. ok, maybe he doesn't sound exactly like that but that' was my first thought.
descriptions keep going on and on so I skip ahead. how many times will his hair stand on end? too many! only at chapter 10......it's tiresome,

    Great Story
Would you consider the audio edition of Silicon Mage to be better than the print version?
Great story, really a mix of fantasy/mystery/romance. Writing style is fantastic and the reader was really really good.
Have you listened to any of Nicole Pooles other performances before? How does this one compare?
No I had not listened to her before. She was an excellent reader.
    Beautifully Descriptive!
I have loved this series since it came out. T story is great and the writer has a beautiful use of figurative language the constantly gives a visceral experience of what the characters are experience. The reader was great and portrayed the characters so that I didn't even once think about the voice not changing for each character. Highly recommended!!!
    Loved it!
Took me a chapter or so to get into the 1st book but, once in, I was hooked. This one I found hard to stop listening to. We read!

    Meh.
The book needed another 100 pages to tie everything up properly. The ending was rushed and completely dissatisfying. Overall this was a decent series, but book 3 is at least 2 stars below books 1 & 2.
    Riveting
Great conclusion to a heroic fantasy story. I loved it.
    Excellent Book
A great end to the trilogy. I just got back into the Forgotten Realms novels after 20 years. They provide a fun escape of the imagination from all my professional and adult responsibilities!
Pretty good, not salvatore but still entertaining
There are plenty of worse forgtten realms novels out there (Once Around The Realms anyone?) but regardless of what the other reviewer would have you believe this is not one of them. Its a fun series to read with a different culture and approach than most of the typical sword coast/waterdeep clones we see a lot of from tsr authors. I admire the courage it took to write something not all Realms readers would try out with open arms, and even though the story/writing isn't top notch all the time, let's ask ourselves how often is that the case with tsr books? Yet we still buy them anyways and read them because deep down we all know that if tsr wasn't around putting out semi-good/semi-weak books like this, who's going to- you the critical reader? Let me know when you all write the next tolkien, I'd love to read that too!
    all bad
in continuing my reviews of this series: At this point in the story, you may be relieved that you are almost going to escape this historical [book] that can't decide whether the bad guys are truly bad, and vice versa. Unlike the 2 previous books, there isn't a child skewering to show you how bad the good guys are (yes I said good guys), which is supposed to make you feel that they are actually not bad. Confusing? Yes it is. How about the big final battle between 30000 orcs and trolls and 1500 humans who somehow hold the enemy at bay on a flat battle field! Wave after terrifying wave but the good/bad guys win. Ick.

    Five Stars
Ties in good with the series.
    book
building my collection - thanks for helping - the rest of thsi is filler because of the darn minimum requirements - why do they do dumb stuff like this?
A decent novel, but not Knaak's best work
Richard A. Knaak is my favorite author, so I wasted no time in getting a copy of this book (also signed by Mr. Knaak himself). Knaak once again makes use of gargoyles (which he previously used in the books Ruby Flames and Frostwing), a creature that normally isn't seen or mentioned much in the Dragonlance world, so kudos to Mr. Knaak for adding some creativity and change to the DL world. The story in itself is quite decent, and even when it seems like the book is coming to a close, Knaak manages to stretch the story out another 50 or 100 pages. The low points of the book are the characters. The main bad guy, Valkyn is a typical 'Bwa-ha-ha-ha I'm going to conquer the world' villian, and the two high ranking officers Bakal and Cadrio don't differ too much in personalities even though one is supposed to be good and the other evil. However, Knaak does experiment some with the main character Tyros by working with an arrogant character, whereas many of Knaak's other characters in past books were either somewhat out of their heads/minds (i.e. the Dutchman, Shade), or fairly level headed (Cabe Bedlam). One thing I missed was much of the inner contemplation that many of his other characters had, but this book didn't contain nearly as much of this critique.
All and all, this book was worth my time and money, and is probably better than most of the other Dragonlance books out there. For fans of Dragonlance and Knaak's writing, this would be a good choice. However for someone just getting into fantasy or Knaak's writing, picking up a copy of The Legend of Huma would be a better bet for now (then one can pick up The Citadel later).
    Simple, very Simple
This was a painful book to read. I'm not saying that it was bad, it was just painful for me to read. Why? Well it was such a `normal' and unoriginal story that it hurt me. Here are the main characters: An old Guy that's good with a sword, a arrogant Red Robed Mage, a Kender with something special and strange that the others will need, and a cleric that is searching for a lost love that has more or less turned three sixty on her. And the bad guys are none other than an evil magic user with some nice toys and a dragon army general that wants to rule Krynn. Throw in some gold and black dragons and a magical item that is way more powerful than its former and what do you have? A very common and simple fantasy story.
But I'm not saying it was a bad book, I'm just saying it was simple.

SKIP THE PROLOGUE for maximum enjoyment
What did you love best about Sword of the Gods?
I love the main character concept. That's why I say skip the prologue. I somehow did because as I'm listening to this for the second time I am learning that most of the novel's twists are given away right there. It is far more fun to learn about everything as the main character does. Isn't that always the best way?
Who was your favorite character and why?
Damascus. He seems to be genre savvy and otherwise reasonable and intelligent. And of course the big reveal for him is pretty neat.
    Spoiler Free
If you could sum up Sword of the Gods in three words, what would they be?
    Easy. Enjoyable. Attention.
If youve listened to books by Bruce R. Cordell before, how does this one compare?
This is the first book from Bruce R. Cordell and overall it is enjoyable.
What about John Prudens performance did you like?
John Pruden is a Pro's Pro. As always he does a really nice job and I specifically look for books narrated by him.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No extreme reactions from this book. It was refreshing to start a new character/series.
    Any additional comments?
The story is pretty tight and the book moves really well in the first half. But, the second half gets a little sloppy and characters start to fade in and out. It was nice to not have a book jump all around from chapter to chapter (there are only a few core characters. Drizzt books are nice but they tend to have a few chapters on Drizzt then a few on whatever and a few on something else). You actual feel like the story is progressing with Sword of the Gods.
    John Pruden is horrible...
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
    Get someone else to narrate...
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I don't know. I couldn't listen to it due to the narrators horrible voice.
What didnt you like about John Prudens performance?
His voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard. To make matters worse, he reads as slow as possible. I'd like to listen to the Elminster series but John Prudent ruined those too.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Sword of the Gods?
Don't know.... The ear raping voice of John Pruden prevented me from listening to it.
    Any additional comments?
    John Pruden is horrible.

    Pleasantly Surprised!
I bought this book based on its blerb, and because it was based in the Ravenloft universe. I'm a fan of gothic horror, and this story fit the bill! The narrator was very good, with a wide variety of accents. I only found her "old British person" accent to be a little iffy, but the rest of them were great. Suspend reality and let this little gem take you into the world of Mithras Court.

Great book ... unique wish for more just like it
Wish there were alot more from these 2. Clever and funny. Loved it. on to book two.
Not as Good as the Finder's Stone Trilogy
What did you like best about Finder's Bane? What did you like least?
I enjoyed getting a little follow-up on Finder and the few mentions from the previous series (Finder's Stone). The story at the end also tied back nicely. The worst part was the secondary characters. They were never really hatched out but kept showing up... but you really didn't know why or at least know more about them so you would care.
Characters like Jas could have been so much better if we knew more about her and the motives behind her actions. Same with the Bane-Litch.
The story really didn't start until Chapter 6. Honestly, there was some okay information but I didn't feel it took off and made me want to keep reading until that point.
If youve listened to books by Jeff Grubb and Kate Novak before, how does this one compare?
I read the other Finder's Stone trilogy (which I would probably rate my favorite of the realms series. It was a really good story based series. I am also a huge Drizzt fan but those tend to be more action oriented books. Sadly, this was my least favorite of my Grubb/Novak books because the side characters felt like they were just fillers.
Which character as performed by Nicole Greevy was your favorite?
Jebidiah (definitely spelled wrong) was my favorite once you get to a certain point in the book. Joel was also very good.
Did Finder's Bane inspire you to do anything?
Not this time. I looked at the other two books in the series and it was interesting that the series seems to talk religion/gods, but I couldn't do it with learning new characters, etc.
    Any additional comments?
I wouldn't recommend it but if you can get the cliff notes or something it is a nice follow-up/tie in from the Finder's Stone trilogy.

I Don't Even Know How to Feel
What did you like best about Ghostwalker? What did you like least?
So, de Bie combined some Ghostrider with some Batman and some Crow. He even gives a nod to Drizzt. And he uses his word choice to troll (e.g. there's an Earth Genasi whose expression is described as "stony"). It's exactly the kind of trolling I have done as a writer and would do if asked to write an official Forgotten Realms novel. I can't even complain. But then he introduces this "strong" female character who is a Knight in Silver and has this whole thing about rejecting being a soft noblewoman and being respected (etc etc) - yet she CONSTANTLY needs to be saved. And even the once or twice that de Bie lets her fight and maybe she's going to do well / be badass - she still nearly gets raped and needs saving. I can look past some of the "people trusting their instincts" in order to fast-establish relationships and keep things moving and any other complaint someone could come up with - but really? The "strong" Knight in Silver never actually gets to be strong and successful on her own in this novel. That's messed up de Bie. And it got so bad by the middle that I almost gave up... but then de Bie introduced this convoluted "who is actually related to who and who actually killed who and why" plot line that I needed to see the ending of. It was actually really good and had me piecing together clues to see who was related to who and who killed who and why. That part was well worth the read. Plus, I love his trolling. So, there's some really good stuff in here, but turning a Knight in Silver into a perpetual damsel in distress? I'm not sure I can forgive that.
    Great Story.
Where does Ghostwalker rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
among audio books? this one rates pretty low.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Merris was the probably one of the more entertaining characters.
What didnt you like about Kevin Krafts performance?
he seemed very underwhelmed by the story and characters. he had one slightly varying for EVERY one. Merris, Walker, Aria, Lord Singer, Glathiryel. all the same voice.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
in one sitting? I couldnt sit still for 12 hours if I tried.
    Any additional comments?
Ghostwalker is a great revenge tale. it's fun, exciting, VERY D&D. it's pretty easy to get into only having played D&D a bit in Jr High, but the narrator was pretty awful. as much as I like the story, I likely wouldn't recommend the audiobook for it.

Fun crap. Better skimmed than read
Fun crap. Better skimmed than read.
I loved this series as a kid; I was a stupid kid. Now, re-reading it brought a lot of laughs unintended by the author.
The main character is pretentiously pure-hearted. We're introduced to him with a beautiful, powerful older woman offering him money for sex, but he believes in Love. Then he's randomly victimized. As a kid, that was totally my jam, but now I'm like, "Dude, hit that."
I haven't read a book where an innocent young man is approached by so many sexually aggressive women since the last time I gave literary fiction a try.
    The writing is clunky.
But IDK. It's got a decent amount of 'potato chip' factor. It's a very easy read. If it weren't for how much I loved this when I was 12 or so, I probably wouldn't have bothered finishing it just now, but as it is, I'll probably read the next one.
    Something New
Well done story with intrigue, good action scenes, and not an overreliance on magic. The main hero is a bit whiny, self-effacing, and appears to learn more from the bad than the good. The antagonist is so cruel you love to hate him. Great descriptions of large battle scenes, something most have difficulty with. I probably would rate it 4.5 stars due to the 'whiny' factor but rounded up with all the rest being tight.
    A better D&D effort
    A good read!
Doesn't make the mistake so many D&D novels so blatantly do by pasting in Spell names and rule references every other sentence.
The characters have something too them and the villain is an interesting mystery and the aquatic setting was a nice change.
Liked it and will be reading the others in this series.
    one of my favorites
Just wanted to point out that this is one of my favorite trilogies. An epic tale of a young boys destiny including other interesting characters. Any fantasy reader would enjoy it.
