  • Pauline Nguyen - Purpose & The Way Of The Spiritual Entrepreneur
Welcome to another episode of the Decoding Purpose Podcast.
When we reflect on our success in business either as an executive or an entrepreneur we often turn our gaze towards what's around us. Have we got enough sales? Is our marketing strategy working? What does the packaging look like? There is a tendency to focus on the transactions over the transformation - but it is the transformations we ultimately find success. Human transformation that is...because the art of business growth more often than not starts with personal growth.
Today's guest is Pauline Nguyen and she is a best-selling author and award-winning businesswoman – and her achievements are all the more impressive for her having escaped Vietnam on a boat and survived a Thai refugee camp. As the owner of Red Lantern, the most awarded Vietnamese restaurant in the world, in 2012 Pauline won the Australian Telstra Business Award for Medium Business.
Before diving into today's interview, what I want to say is this. I have been blessed over my career to hang out with and learn from the brightest minds in business. On this podcast, I have spoken with thought leaders from all over the world about the nature of purpose.
So it's not often that someone new will come in, with new ideas on purpose and ways of being in the world that completely rewires and upgrades my thinking about life, business and about purpose in roughly an hour....but Pauline Nguyen did that just.
And the best part is we recorded the entire conversation - so today you can tune in and upgrade your thinking in order to tap into a well of infinite wisdom that will completely revolutionise how you do life, how you do business, and how you think about purpose.

  • Hector Garcia: The Sequal - The Journey Of The Ikigai
Hello and welcome to today’s episode of Decoding Purpose. An episode that I have to say I am personally so excited to launch.
For the regular listeners of the Decoding Purpose podcast you may remember that last year I interviewed the co- author of the International bestselling book on purpose - Ikigai: The Japanese Secret To A Long and Happy Life. The name of that author - The one and only Hector Garcia.
For those of you who don't know the book - Ikigai is a book like no other, providing a deep & thoughtful exploration of the ancient Japanese concept of the Ikigai. The book was literally translated into 26 languages all over the world - so I think it’s fair to say that the book itself was a roaring success and truly decoded purpose the Japanese way for so many readers around the globe.
Since our first interview Hector and I have connected a few times, and I have to say he is a man of deep humility, introspection and someone I deeply admire and respect as both an author but also as a truly kind and generous human being. I can't tell you how honoured I was when Hector reached out to me to have him back on the show to talk about part two of the Ikigai series - The Ikigai Journey: A Practical Guide to Finding Happiness and Purpose the Japanese Way. And a book that you can jump online and purchase today.
What I want to say if you loved the first part of the Ikigai series - part two is your invitation to go deep and to do the work to really peel back the layers of your potential as a human being to find your engraving in the soul. The part of you that longs for expression, for fulfilment and for a depth of meaning. This book in every sense of the word - is one for the purpose driven pioneer who is willing and ready to go on an adventure within that awakens both the heart and soul.
So without further delay let's jump on the Ikigai train. It is with great joy I present to you the one and only Hector Garcia.

  • Christos Tsolkas: The Gift of Crisis & Leading With Certainty
Welcome To Another Episode of The Decoding Purpose Podcast.
Today's guest is an author whose book I came across while scrolling through a LinkedIn page titled the Business Of Purpose. The title of that book - The Gift Of Crises. The book cover features a glittering jewel that caught my eye, and when I zoned in on the content, I just knew I needed to track down the author. Today's guest is the incredible Christos Tsolkas.
The book was only released in February of this year, and I stumbled upon it only a few weeks later. As the saying goes - timing is everything. See when the bushfires hit I thought that was the turning point of 2020. How wrong was I! And then there was COVID, and that wasn't a turning point - that was a tornado. Today, ( a Thursday afternoon in early June) we are now faced with a human tsunami where the injustice of centuries of racism has surfaced with one angry roar that the world cannot ignore. That cry - Black Lives Matter. If Crises is a gift this year will be like all our Christmases coming at once.
Today's guest is Christos Tsolkas. Professionally Christos was the Managing Director of large organizations in Southern Europe and Eastern Europe for more than a decade. In that time, he experienced significant crises and gained insights into what it takes to lead with certainty when the world is anything but certain. Today he is an independent advisor working with established companies and start-ups, to improve innovation and growth injecting a broader purpose into their business model. Innovation that off the back of the current climate has never been more important.
For any leaders looking to navigate these interesting times or looking for some advice from someone who has truly walked their talk - this is your book.
The Gift of Crisis is a roadmap of proven-in-practice steps for all organizations to properly use any crisis to reset and redefine their purpose and business model, align their stakeholders and society, and use innovation and technology to grow exponentially and help the planet become a better home.

  • Kaila Colbin: Courage In The Face Of An Unwritten Future
Welcome to another episode of The Decoding Purpose Podcast.
We are living in a VUCA world - short for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. A world defined by social change, economic change, or climate change. An age where emerging technologies meet global pandemics, where our social values converge with our political ones, and where old paradigms of thought and behaviour are being replaced by the new, the unknown and the uncertain. In a conversation about turning points, we are in a tornado of change, and the only thing that seems crystal clear to me is the need for courage.
So where do we begin in translating this complexity, in order to firstly gain clarity, and from there to lean into the courage required to navigate an unwritten economy and future? I know this has been a burning question for me...and one that led me to today's incredible guest - Kaila Colbin.
Kaila Colbin is a co-founder of Boma Global and the CEO of Boma New Zealand. She spearheaded the hugely successful SingularityU New Zealand and Australia Summits. After training with Brené Brown, Kaila became a Certified Dare to Lead™ Facilitator, and has worked with hundreds of people to increase courage as a core competency.
Kaila was formerly the Curator and Licensee for TEDxChristchurch in New Zealand and TEDxScottBase in Antarctica, that said it is evident that Kaila is herself a global thought leader - not that she would frame it that way. She would prefer to see herself as a public intellectual with a focus on translating the gold-plated evidence even when it's vulnerable, risky or requires radical acts of bravery.
Please welcome to the podcast, the incredible Kaila Colbin.

  • Alain Hunkins: Cracking The Code - A New Paradigm In Leadership
Welcome to Another Episode Of The Decoding Purpose Podcast.
Over the last century, the rules of ‘old power’ in leadership were crystal clear. To get things done, or to succeed in business the general consensus was to remain closed, authoritative and inaccessible - In short, the ego is the leading principle. It's amazing how quickly the world and our ideals can change. Today - globally we continue to be in the grips of a global crisis, and the shadow of power-hungry leadership strategies are being frightfully exposed - and the best part - it's being called out - and at the same time a new type of heart centred leadership is being celebrated.
Why? Because right now people need great leadership. We are experiencing a kind of collective grief all over the world, and as we rebuild we are needing a space for our stories to be told, and hearts to be seen. We need healing and of all of the capital in the world...human capital matters the most. After all, it is in these times we realise the value of human life.
So, when we consider the old rules in leadership within the context of a world in the grips of a shift in paradigm unlike any we have ever known in this lifetime, then how do we lead, and what do the new rules look like? How do we shift our ego into empathy, our loudness into deep listening, or transform our force into facilitation? How do we create a foundation of safety in a world that feels so far away from the normal we have always known? The Burning Question - How do we go about cracking the leadership code to find meaning and purpose in the brave new world?
Today's guest is Alain Hunkins, author and leadership consultant who connects the science of high performance with the performing art of leadership. Over the course of his 20+ year career, Alain has worked with tens of thousands of leaders in over 25 countries and served clients in all industries, including 42 Fortune 100 companies.Alain is also the author of Cracking The Leadership Code - and in the book, he unleashes the secrets to building strong and courageous leaders refined during the 20+ years he’s worked with leaders. Alain believes that when you crack the code you’ll have a new operating model for organizational leadership that will help your teams thrive in today's unwritten economy.

  • Rebecca Tapp x Richie Harkham: Purpose Decoded & The Return On Resilience
Welcome to Another Episode Of Decoding Purpose.
For regular listeners - In series one of the Decoding Purpose podcast, you may remember that I interviewed an incredible thought leader by the name of Richie Harkham. For those who missed it - it's an episode worth digging up as Richie shares his incredible journey as a serial entrepreneur, a charity founder, a winemaker, and as one of the most resilient human beings I know. In fact - Richie's message is all about how we can leverage A Return On Resilience to thrive in crises, rapid change or uncertainty. Since appearing on Decoding Purpose last year Richie has made the leap into podcast land launching his own series earlier this year titled Return On Resilience. The name of the podcast speaks for itself.
A few weeks ago I was honoured when Richie asked me to come on his show as a guest. I loved every second of decoding the space in between resilience and the discovery of our life purpose, so today I wanted to share our conversation with you all. So, without further delay, come into my world, learn more about my journey into purpose but bring a pen, because this episode is yours. Richie and I unpack all of the tools you can use to unlock your purpose and hopefully become more resilient in doing so.

  • Ryan Berman: Purpose & The Central Courage System
Welcome to Another Episode of The Decoding Purpose Podcast.
Throughout the ages, people have searched for the precise alchemy of ingredients that constitute great leadership. Leadership of governments, communities and of course leadership in organisations, but most importantly personal leadership. Especially within an environment of global pandemics, political uprisings, emerging technologies and climate change. So what is that one ingredient so crucial to great leadership - which one floats to the top. The answer is undeniably courage.
It makes sense when we consider that we are living in an unwritten future - and it takes courage to be a pioneer of a story unwritten. And at this exact moment in time there are so many leaders, entrepreneurs, economists, scientists, innovators or inventors out there bravely redesigning, rewriting, and forming thoughts around the possibilities for an unknown future. They are the courageous people who are truly leading the way for all of us. None more so than those working on the development of a vaccine for Covid-19. That's courage...and with the current urgency attached to the outcome - its courage under fire.
We have seen people all over the world have the courage to call out toxic stories of the past, in order to heal society, flip perspectives, command action or forge the way for a more inclusive and purpose driven world whether that be through movements like Black Lives Matter, The Schools Strike for Climate or Me Too. It is here we see radical acts of bravery in the face of change. So I think it's fair to say that if we look at all of these examples it is not fear that brings about change, and nor it is fear that enables an authentic connection to purpose, but nor is it a lack of fear. It's the learned ability to see that fear and to bravely March on through. So how do we decode the central courage system that fundamentally drives the creation of a better world.
This brings me to today's guest - the incredible Ryan Berman. Ryan has more than 20 years in the courageous ideas space and an intimate understanding of the intricacies of emotional storytelling for the purposes of driving courageous change. He is the founder of Courageous brands, and also a social enterprise called Sock Problems. Ryan has had his methods featured in Entrepreneur, Fast Company, Inc and Forbes. Today he generously covers the learning’s found in his book Return On Courage: A Business Playbook For Change.

  • Anneke van den Broek: Humanity And The Purpose Of Pets
Welcome To Another Episode Of Decoding Purpose.
With many of us slowly returning to the office, opposed to working from home, I figured it was a good time reflect on some of the silver lining moments of lockdown - and for those who have pets, I am sure one of the pleasures of working from home has been having the time with you fur baby by your side. After all, for the animal lovers out there our relationships with our cats, pooches, parrots, or whatever crazy critter fill our hearts - pets are our family and fill our hearts.
That is why today, I wanted to dedicate an episode to our furry friends, and an incredible woman who has spent her life decoding the purpose of pets. Her name is Anneke Van De Broke, and her mission is to ensure humanity is provided to all animals and to improve the lives of all humans through pets.
Anneke van den Broek is the multi-award-winning founder and CEO of beloved pet care brand Rufus & Coco, stocked in 9 countries and selling 2.5 products per minute. Not only is she a passionate pet owner and animal lover, Anneke is an award-winning entrepreneur and a mentor for women in business and personally mentors four high-growth companies.
She is also a passionate advocate for pet welfare and has partnered with the Australian Pet Welfare Foundation to help in their mission to ensure pets are welcome in rental properties and working towards zero euthanasias.
So grab your furry little friend, kick back and let's get ready to not only talk to the animals, but to a woman who has dedicated her purpose to the world of pets and pet care.

  • Phil Burton: Purpose - It's Human Nature
Welcome To Another Episode of The Decoding Purpose Podcast.
When it comes to guests, I am always intentional about finding people from all walks of life. This includes thought leaders, scientists, entrepreneurs, actors, artists...the list goes on! Why do I do it? Because in every conversation, there is a golden thread. I can look inside for the patterns...the codes of meaning, and in doing so, I can connect more deeply with one thing—our human nature. And that awesome because today's guest is also from chart topping music group Human Nature. His name...the one and only Phil Burton.
So what has Phil Burton got to say about purpose? What I want to tell you is that Phil's journey encapsulates what the golden threads of purpose are all about. His story is one that captures the power of a dream, the focus, the commitment and the discipline to do the work, it is a story about courage, taking risks, and showing up time and time again to do world-class work as an individual and as a team with one focus - the creation of harmonies and rhythm. It's a conversation that is bigger than the singing of a song - because its about the meaning of the music. The joy and the happiness shared with so many people over a career spanning more than 30 years. Finally, this is a story of deep humility, and Phil Burton has that in spades. He is one of the kindest people I know.
Now...I have something to confess. I am currently trying to make my introductions a little shorter with strict instruction from the shows producer but even if that wasn't the case and I had an hour to do this intro I still wouldn't get through the long list of award-winning hits, albums and shows produced by these Aussie legends. What I will say is Human Nature has been at the top of their game for more than 30 years, they have held a residence in Vegas for the last tens years with unprecedented success, and In November 2019 Human Nature were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.
So without further delay lets pop on those dancing shoes and get ready to croon with none other than the Aussie music legend himself the one and only Phil Burton.

  • Melissa Neighbour: Reimagining The Purpose Of Cities
Last Friday I was excited to have my first interview live in the studio for quite a few weeks as restrictions started to ease off just a little. I was even happier for that person to be a friend, a colleague, and one of the world changing members of my work family from Future Crunch. That guest was none other than the queen of all cities - Melissa Neighbour.
To give you some context Mel is an environmental town planner, community builder and sustainability specialist. She is the Managing Director of Suburban Town Planners, a purpose-driven town planning consultancy and she has developed and implemented award-winning sustainable development projects across Australia. Mels mission is clear and that is to to activate sustainable forms of living in urban spaces of the future. She believes in a 21st century that works for everyone, and every thing, and that cities will be at the heart of that revolution.
In an age where we have seen cities completely isolated, or in some cases filled with violence or destruction (and that is not making any comment on the importance of why which is undeniable) - Im focussing only on the cities themselves - I very much hope that today's conversation about the purpose of cities is one that fills you up with love, hope and a sense of optimism about the power of our cities to create a more peaceful, abundant and beautiful world for all of humankind.
So without further delay - lets welcome Melissa Neighbour to the Decoding Purpose Podcast.
