Roll for Lore

DnD Monsters: Centaurs

Listen Later

From the wedding brawl that ended up carved on the Parthenon to the forests of the Forgotten Realms, centaurs have one of the richest histories in both real-world mythology and Dungeons & Dragons. In this episode we dig into all of it.

We start at the source — ancient Greece, where centaurs weren't just "horse people" but a philosophical argument about civilization versus savagery. We break down the Centauromachy, the infamous wedding battle between the Lapiths and the centaurs that became one of the defining myths of the ancient world, and introduce every major player: Pirithous, Theseus, Caeneus the warrior who couldn't be killed by any blade, and the centaurs who crashed the feast and paid for it. We also talk about Chiron — the great exception, the wise mentor who tutored Achilles and Jason and became the template for every sage teacher in fantasy fiction.

Then we trace centaurs through the full history of D&D — from their appearance in the original 1974 White Box all the way through 2nd Edition, covering every sourcebook, supplement, and Dragon Magazine appearance along the way. We get into their lore in the Forgotten Realms: where they live, how their tribal societies work, their complicated relationship with elves, and the surprisingly interesting detail that their own god Skerrit exists and they mostly just... don't call him.

And we talk about Timoth Eyesbright — the good-hearted centaur adventurer from the 1988 DC Comics AD&D series who became one of the most fully-realized centaur characters in Forgotten Realms canon, including his four-issue showdown with Xanathar the Beholder crime lord of Waterdeep in the Catspaw arc.

Topics covered: centaur mythology, Greek mythology, the Centauromachy, Chiron, Lapiths, D&D monster history, Forgotten Realms lore, centaur society 5e, Skerrit, Cormanthor, the High Forest, the Shaar, DC Comics AD&D, Timoth Eyesbright, Xanathar, Waterdeep

Great for: D&D players and DMs, Forgotten Realms fans, mythology nerds, anyone who wants to run a centaur NPC or PC that actually feels real.
