  • 23: Using AI to improve your startup (with 2x unicorn founder Jason Cohen @asmartbear)

    THE GUEST

Jason Cohen is just insanely good at building businesses. Jason has built four technology startups with more than $1M in revenue; he has sold two and is currently working on his 4th business, WP Engine, which has 200,000 customers and 1200 employees. 2 of the businesses Jason started are worth over $1B. On top of all of this Jason is very active in the startup community, as an angel investor and writer. He is one of the only people who writes about startups that is actually worth reading.

  • 22: Why are investors obsessed with scaling? (with Shark Tank Shark Steve Baxter)

    THE GUEST

Shark Tank Shark Steve Baxter has had incredible success as a founder and has since transitioned to starting and running one of the top investment funds in Australia. Outside of the fame, the success, and the 1000’s pitches, Steve also ran Australia’s top accelerator, River City Labs. In 2017, I went through that accelerator, which is why we survived and grew as a business. I will always have a lot of love for what Steve has been able to do for the startup community.

    But, to give some details:

    • Steve started his first business when he was 23

    • Steve then started a business called PIPE Networks, which he sold eight years later for $373m

    • Steve now runs the investment company TEN13

    • Steve is incredibly passionate about the startup ecosystem and has made one of the most significant impacts on the Australian ecosystem out of anyone in the country.

    • 21: How can I meet new people? (with Nick Gray)

      THE GUEST

Best-selling author Nick Gray wrote one of the most influential books I read last year, “The 2-Hour Cocktail Party,” which is essentially a formula and guide to hosting small gatherings or parties. This book aims to help you meet new people, strengthen existing relationships, and make YOU the person everyone wants to know. I read this book the first week I moved to the US and threw a party three weeks later. I really do love his book and recommend it all the time.

Before the book, Nick built and sold two multi-million dollar companies, the most recent being Museum Hack, which was featured all over the internet. On top of this, Nick regularly hosts incredible events in Austin, posting content on his YouTube channel and writing a regular newsletter.

Nick is an absolute expert in building networks and relationships.

    • 20: Are startup accelerators worth it? (with Michael Batko)

      THE GUEST

Michael Batko is the CEO of Startmate, Australia's most ambitious accelerator. Michael started as a business student following the traditional path into consulting and corporate life (Amex, PwC, KPMG) … but then fell in love with the startup world growing two start-ups from a team of 2 to 50+, including a $ 13M Series B capital raise. Then he joined Startmate, Australia's most ambitious accelerator, as Head of Operations, and ended up taking over as CEO. On top of this, Michael is the founder of Puddle Pod, a 5 week virtual productivity huddle which brings together incredible founders who are obsessed with improving their businesses and lives. And my personal favourite, Michael runs a book club that I attended and it actually introduced me to Fantasy books which I now love.

Michael is an absolute expert at building 0 to 1 and building up founders.

      THE TAKEAWAYS

      • Joining a startup accelerator is extremely beneficial for founders who want to accelerate their growth and have access to mentors and resources.

      • Outsourcing app development can be risky and is generally a bad idea. Iit is always better to find a technical co-founder or team member.

      • Prioritising sleep is crucial for overall well-being and productivity. Establishing work-life boundaries and implementing healthy habits can help improve sleep quality.

        • 18: How to announce the death of my startup (with Danny Miranda)

          THE GUEST

Danny Miranda is the host of the Danny Miranda podcast! A podcast with the ambition of selling out Madison Square Garden and one of the most incredible guest lineups you could imagine, Danny has interviewed Alex Hormozi, Seth Godin, Gary Vaynerchuk, and over 400 others! What I admire most about Danny is that he is an independent thinker; throughout his life and career, his deep curiosity has shone through, he has always asked questions that challenged who he was and challenged the path he was taking. Because of that, Danny has experienced more than most people think is even possible; whether it was starting and failing his first blog at 14, successfully launching his businesses, podcasting, or even creating dropshipping courses, his journey has been constantly marked by an unquenchable desire to learn and to contribute to others. Danny is an absolute expert at aligning his own life; every bit of effort he puts into the world is an intentional decision to work towards the life he wants to lead.

          THE TAKEAWAYS

          • Personal growth requires self-reflection and a willingness to challenge yourself.

          • Announcing a startup's end should be done honestly and without fear of judgment.

          • Becoming a leader involves leading yourself and embracing both your strengths and insecurities.

          • Managing multiple projects requires prioritisation and focus on one project at a time.

          • 17: LinkedIn outreach (with Clay Mosley)

            THE GUEST

Clay Mosley is the Founder and CEO of Dripify, a company founded to help businesses build their entire marketing system internally so they never have to rely on agencies again. Dripify’s tagline is ‘WE HATE MARKETING TOO,’ which I absolutely love. Before this, Clay had a wild business life; he spent the first eight years of his career bouncing from one job to another, being fired eight times before finally starting his own business. He spent the next seven years starting 2x marketing agencies, scaling them to 8 figures each and selling them both. Now, he spends his time on Dripify, helping people avoid marketing agencies because he saw how broken the system was. On top of all of this, Clay is a co-host on the Freelance to Founder, where he coaches freelancers on how to become great founders in their businesses. Clay is an absolute expert at everything marketing.

            THE TAKEAWAYS

            • When starting with marketing, focus on building a solid offer and finding one source of traffic that works.

            • In LinkedIn outreach, be personal, casual, and differentiate yourself from other messages.

            • Sales goals and marketing objectives are not the same. Marketing is about brand awareness, and sales is about closing the sale.

            • Measure marketing effectiveness through metrics like brand awareness, impressions, and views.

            • Branding campaigns have a delayed gratification but can substantially increase the lifetime value of clients.

            • 16: My startup is crushing me (with Jordan Allen)

              THE GUEST

Jordan Allen is a very successful multiple-time founder. In 2011, Jordan founded and scaled Stay Alfred, a next-generation hospitality platform, to over $100M in annual revenue, which served over 1M guests across 40 markets with a team of more than 300 people. After this, Jordan founded Doorsey, a platform that makes buying a home 100x easier. He sold it this year to Auction.io. While Jordan has had a lot of business success, my favorite achievement is that he took investment from Adam Neumann, which means that Jordan sold the best salesperson alive.

              THE QUESTIONS

[6:41] The scale of my startup is crushing me: After successfully scaling their startup, a founder is majorly struggling with the weight and momentum of the startup they created, struggling even to take a single day off sick. We dive into what kind of process and team you need to scale.

[23:47] What’s harder? 0 to 1? Or 1 to 1000? We break down both the inception and scale stages of a startup and work out which stage really is the hardest.

            • 15: Product roadmaps (with ex-Google product lead Mike Knapp)

              THE GUEST

Mike Knapp is an incredibly smart product thinker. Currently, Mike is building Mottle, a platform that lets you build a chatbot in 10 minutes with no coding. Before this, Mike was a product lead at Google and co-founded the experimental Google product Task Mate. Mike also co-founded Shoes of Prey, a startup he helped scale MASSIVELY to a valuation I can only imagine. In the middle of all of those projects, he was the Entrepreneur in Residence in the accelerator I did years ago and has been an instrumental mentor in my life so, I am so excited to have had him on the show. Mike is an expert at building products and product management.

              THE QUESTIONS

[7:26] How do you defend your roadmap from leaders? A product manager in a startup is constantly battling with his founders as they jump from idea to idea, disrupting the product roadmap. We dive into how to effectively set a product strategy that has buy-in at every level.

[24:03] Roadmap template? A new product manager has no idea where to get started building out a product roadmap, so we break down what a product roadmap actually is, how to use it, and how to build one that works.
