  • How to Make More Time for Your Health

Are you constantly running around with no time for yourself? When this is the case, meal prep and exercise can easily slip through the cracks.

In this episode, I delve into the impact of how we use time and perceive how much time we have, has on our health. Discover a powerful technique to manage your time and prioritize your well-being: time-blocking. Get ready to face your brain's resistance as I explore how to make time for what truly matters to you.

Then, I'll explore the societal expectations placed on women and how it impacts the projects we take on, and therefore the amount of time that we have. These expectations often lead to judgment and shame if we fall short and don't do what we or others expect. The pressure can even trickle down to our children, as parents push them toward success. When we can find balance and break free from this cycle, we'll be able to have more control over our time. Through prioritizing and setting boundaries on our time, we can focus on our own health and well-being, setting a positive example for our loved ones.

Finally, I'll revisit the topic of 'nice lady syndrome': when saying 'yes' to everything becomes a burden, overwhelming us with responsibilities, and the toll it takes on our mental and physical health.

Join me as I discuss the power of saying 'no' and how it will give you better health

  • How People Pleasing Impacts Your Health

In this episode, I dive deep into the concept of people-pleasing and its impact on our health and well-being. I explore the challenges faced by women in saying no and how this behavior stems from avoiding conflict and the need to control others' emotional responses. Throughout the episode, I share personal experiences with people pleasing and how it can manifest in various aspects of life. I also discuss the importance of setting boundaries, practicing self-compassion, and seeking coaching and support to overcome this tendency.

Join me as I break down the effects of people pleasing and the importance of prioritizing our own needs over accommodating others, especially for women in midlife. Don't forget to prioritize your well-being and have an amazing week!

Chapter Summaries: Exploring People Pleasing (0:00:07)

People pleasing is the tendency to prioritize other people's needs and desires over our own, often at the cost of our own well-being. This behavior is not the same as kindness, generosity, or altruism, but rather an inability to say no and a constant need for approval from others.

    Understanding People Pleasing Behavior (0:15:16)

Women are often taught that it's better to give than to receive and to prioritize others' opinions over their own. This discussion includes the realization that people-pleasing behaviors often stem from avoiding conflict and the need to control others' emotional responses. We also examine the importance of accepting negative emotions in ourselves and others to help overcome the need to people please.

    People Pleasing Effects (0:26:10)

We examine how people-pleasing behaviors can manifest in our lives and negatively impact our health. This can happen when we agree to go out to dinner or order in when we've already planned a meal, give in to others' wants to avoid conflict or struggle and take on more work around the house to avoid dealing with others' bad moods. Recognizing the problem, setting boundaries, practicing self-compassion, and hiring a coach can help combat these tendencies.

    Managing People Pleasing (0:38:27)

We explore the consequences of people-pleasing and the importance of prioritizing our own needs over accommodating others. This is especially relevant for women in midlife, as it can significantly impact their health.

"By letting go of the need to please others, we reclaim our power and prioritize our own well-being." - Elizabeth Sherman

  • When We Judge Food & Health

Through an exploration of why we judge ourselves, others, and the world around us, this podcast dives deep into how our judgments can be both natural and harmful. As we uncover the real power behind our judgments, we must ask ourselves: are we really in control of our judgments, or do we hold the power to be in control of ourselves?

I was counseling a client about their food habits and judgments when things suddenly took an unexpected turn. Uncovering a pattern that extended far beyond food and deep into our beliefs and behaviors, I set out on a journey of self-exploration and awareness to help others liberate themselves from the chains of judgment and find their true selves. What I found was both surprising and inspiring - a truth that changed the way I saw the world.
If you're feeling frustrated and hopeless about not being able to accept yourself, embrace self-love, and be your true self despite all the self-criticism and negative body image that you battle with, then you are not alone!

Have you ever heard that, in order to love yourself, you must eat whatever you desire, that comparing yourself to others will make your self-esteem rise, or that self-judgment will help you achieve your goals? As a woman who struggles with self-judgment and body image, you may have heard these myths, but I'm here to share the truth about overcoming judgment in eating habits and self-perception.

The resources mentioned in this episode are:

    • Reflect on your own judgments and ask yourself if they are true, who decided they were true, and if everyone in the world agrees with them.
    • Start questioning your beliefs and judgments when you hear yourself saying should or shouldn't.
    • Consider how societal norms and expectations have influenced your judgments and beliefs.
    • Analyze your judgments about food, behavior, appearance, and other aspects of life.
    • Practice being more aware of your judgments and the emotions they evoke in you.
    • Give yourself permission to judge, but avoid acting on those judgments in a negative way.
    • Work on reducing the strength of your judgments by becoming more aware of them and questioning their validity.
    • Reevaluate your beliefs and judgments about what is appropriate or civilized behavior.
    • Challenge societal expectations about gender roles, body image, and other aspects of life.
    • Share your experiences and insights about judgment with others, either in conversations or by creating content such as podcasts or blog posts.

    The Nuances of Judgment
In daily life, judgment is a natural occurrence involving categorizing situations or people as positive or negative. While it is impossible to completely avoid judgment, it is essential to understand the nuances of our judgments and how they feel internally. By becoming hyper-aware of these judgments, individuals can begin to question and analyze their thoughts, rather than automatically acting upon them. This awareness allows for introspection and growth as an individual navigate challenging situations. Elizabeth Sherman delves into this topic on her podcast, discussing the importance of confronting and analyzing the judgments we hold about ourselves and others. Through engaging in conversation with her clients and audience, Elizabeth encourages the recognition of these judgments and the importance of questioning their validity. Acknowledging that it's impossible not to judge, she emphasizes the impact that understanding our thoughts and their origins can have on improving self-perception and relationships with others.

"When we think other people are judging us, we are actually judging ourselves because we don't actually know what other people are thinking about us." - Elizabeth Sherman

  • Success Is Hard

In episode 119 of the Done with Dieting podcast, I delve into why success is hard, especially regarding our health journeys. I discuss the importance of taking responsibility for our actions and avoiding placing blame on others or circumstances. Through my own experiences, I've learned that success is quite simple when we focus on one thing at a time and determine whether it works for us.

Understanding your health and adopting healthy habits are essential stepping stones in the journey toward greater well-being. It is the responsibility of each person to recognize when something is working or not working for their body, assess their own needs, and make the necessary changes for optimal health.

The real challenge lies in our willingness to make the necessary sacrifices and prioritize our own needs. By addressing emotional baggage and developing the right mindset, we can create optimal health for ourselves instead of trying to fit into a specific cultural standard.

In order to do this, individuals must drop any expectations to adhere to cultural standards or specific body types and instead, focus on creating personalized health-related goals that feel achievable and motivating. Paying attention to your health is not always an easy process, but the challenge can be minimized when you face yourself honestly. By staying aware of your own habits and their impact on overall health, you can identify effective steps toward improvement. It's important to be patient and inquisitive when it comes to implementing changes, as this willingness to explore what's happening with you more deeply can be a highly rewarding experience.

When we can understand that we are the ones in control of our health and our destiny, then we have the opportunity to get out of our own way and get on our own side. - Elizabeth Sherman

This episode will inspire you to persevere and believe in yourself, as these skills can be applied to all areas of your life.

  • When Decisions Feel Bad

We think that we'll "know" the right decision when we feel it in our bones. We think that when we make the right decision, it will 'feel in alignment'.

And when we look for solutions to our problems, we ask others for their opinions, we google how to solve the problem, and apply band-aid approaches to the symptoms, never really addressing the root problem because addressing the root problem feels too painful to face.

In this podcast episode, I'm exploring the topic of when we make a decision, but question whether it's the right decision because it doesn't feel good.

After coaching hundreds of women, I know the real problem usually isn’t “not enough information” – it’s too much of it, and not knowing where to start. With close to 300 episodes, this show can feel that way too.

To make it easy, I created a free Listener’s Roadmap that helps you figure out which episodes are right for you right now. Tell me what you’re struggling with – low energy, emotional eating, stress, sleep, exercise, or all of the above – and I’ll point you to a curated path of episodes and resources to get you moving.
