  • 77: Client Success Stories

3 Client Stories as an example of what is Possible

Don't you love hearing other people's success stories?

I used to feel a ton of envy hearing about other people achieving success in an area of my life that I desired, but I've been able to turn that around & now I know to use other people's stories as evidence that I can do the thing too.

If someone else has done it, I can do it too.

You will be amazed at these three women's stories. They're super relatable if you're a woman who grew up in the United States, and having experience with all the diets: Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem & others.

In this conversation, we cover a huge range of topics - from growing up constantly being on a diet, to what it takes to lose 100 lbs, to a side-tracked conversation about cranberry farming.

    Listen to learn more.

Hey! I love hearing from you. Send me a text. Let me know what resonated with you.

  • 76: Body Neutrality

If loving your body seems completely out of reach, you might want to try a more neutral approach.

Body love - it's something that we all aspire to. Women are consistently told that we should love our bodies.

But instead of actually doing that, we use it as evidence of one more way in which we're not doing 'being a woman' good enough. We use the fact that we dislike our bodies (and we shouldn't) as further evidence of why we suck.

Although loving our bodies is for sure something that we can aspire to, for many of us, it feels unattainable. Like - how do you even DO that?

If this is you, you're going to want to tune in because in this episode, we're addressing body neutrality, which may feel more realistic for you.

  • Pivoting

How to go with it when life sends you a curveball.

It's natural for us to jump to "the How" when we're talking about our goals - we've been conditioned to think that way:

Me: I'm going to make a million dollars.

Dad: Great! How are you going to do that?

Me: I want to take a gap year & travel Europe

Mom: That's fantastic. How are you going to pay for it?

And those questions are good intentioned, but they limit us in our ability - because we believe that we can't DO the thing until we have the perfect plan laid out from beginning to end.

AND THEN, when things don't go as planned, it blocks us from getting scrappy & figuring it out.

But the truth is, that if you've ever set out towards a goal, that when you reach it, there were lots of turns, plot twists, and obstacles that we couldn't have anticipated. When we look back at what it took us to accomplish the goal, we NEVER could have predicted that the path we took was the way that it turned out.

Instead of giving up when things don't turn out like we think they should have, we need to learn how to pivot.

  • Mothers and Daughters with Karen CL Anderson

How shame is passed down generationally.

When we think about mothers and daughters, we think of a Norman Rockwell painting, don't we? We think of mothers and daughters who have a close relationship, where the mother teaches the daughter how to become a woman, teaches her valuable life skills from the perspective of "I remember my mom teaching me this too & it's all normal."

But because mothers and grandmothers are humans, they perpetuate the same stories generation after generation because of their human-ness and make mistakes.

If you want to heal your relationship with your mother, this episode is a must listen.

Listeners can sign up to receive karen's weekly Love Notes and when they do they get her Definitive Guide to Setting Healthy, Mature Boundaries With Your Mother

    About Karen CL Anderson

Karen C.L. Anderson is a master-certified life coach and author. Difficult mother-daughter relationships are her jam. Her coaching practice is trauma-informed and based on intersectional feminist principles. She recognizes that what's possible personally is what's possible collectively and that the Mother Wound is not actually about mothers but about systems and structures that oppress all women. She understands the adage "hurt people hurt people" but prefers to say "people who are unaware of their hurt sometimes hurt other people." She also acknowledges that cultivating compassion and empathy doesn't mean you have to hang out with hurt people and that healthy boundaries (up to and including going "no contact" even if just temporarily) are at the heart of healthy relationships.

  • Mental Fitness

Like Physical Fitness, but for your brain.

Can we talk about mental fitness?

We talk a lot about physics fitness, but what does it mean to be mentally or emotionally fit?

When we become physically fit, we perform repetitions of physical exercises, where we build up the strength of our physical muscles.

When we talk about mental fitness, we talk about the mental work where we build up the strength of our mental muscles.

In other words, doing what we want MOST over what we want in the MOMENT.

How would it feel to make a commitment to yourself & then follow through with it?

The thing is that many of us start out with weights that are too heavy for us.

Just like a personal trainer would never start their client out squatting 225 lbs, we don't want to commit to setting and following through with goals that are too rigorous us mentally.

We need to lean into it.

We need to strengthen our commitment muscles, our follow through muscles, our discipline muscles, and the muscle of thinking and believing in the future version of ourselves.

And we want to weaken our self-sabotage muscles. Right?

When we strengthen our mental fitness, it leads to less mental drama because we're following through on doing the things that are really important to us.

I teach both my private and small group clients how to pay attention to their brain, and build their mental fitness skills so that you can stop doing the things that you ask, "Why did I do that?!?"

Want to stop doing the things that leave you wondering why you didn't follow through or sabotaged yourself? And more importantly, quieting your inner critic?

  • Learning to Love Running with Jill Angie

    An episode for beginner runners.

I hear it all the time! "I just don't like running!"

I get it. I used to feel that way too.

But if running is available to you and you want to do it, there are huge benefits to developing a running habit: it's relatively inexpensive to get into; it's something you can do either by yourself or with a friend or two; you can pretty much do it anywhere; and at any time of the day.

My guest on today's podcast shares such incredible information, like how to keep yourself motivated even if the climate you live in gets in your way of being a year-round runner, what to look for & pay attention to with gear, and how to start your running practice if you're a complete beginner.

    About Jill Angie:

Jill Angie is the founder and Head Rebel of Not Your Average Runner. When I first started running over 20 years ago, all I wanted to do was burn calories and lose weight. And I hated every minute of it. It felt like punishment and I was always frustrated and disappointed.

In 2009, I decided to stop thinking about running as a means to an end and started using it as a tool to build up my strength and confidence. That mental shift got me through all the times when running wasn't easy (and there were a lot of those times)!

I became a triathlete. I ran half marathons. I became a personal trainer with my own studio. And I noticed that as vast as the running community was, there weren't a lot of people out there who looked like me.

I knew how awesome running made me feel, and I wanted to help other women like me get the same benefit – not just improved fitness, but increased self-confidence and self-love.

  • Why We Moved to Mexico

A personal episode about our decision to expatriate from the US.

One of the most common questions I get has nothing to do with health and fitness, but rather all the details about how my husband and I got to Mexico? And why?

When I tell people that I live in Mexico, they'll often ask me, "The state? Or the country?!?"

And then all the curious questions that folks have - like, how is life different since you moved? How do you eat differently? What do you do for fun? Do you speak spanish? How is that going?

So in today's podcast episode, I'm dishing all the details.

Moving to Mexico was probably the hardest thing that I have ever done. But I would do it all over in a heartbeat..

What's different since I moved to Mexico & how I've changed as a result. Want to get personal? Tune in.

  • Measuring Backwards
How to be happier with your accomplishments.

Every one of us has a judge in our brains that tell us that we can be happy when…

    • We get the job
    • We get married
    • We buy the house
    • We organize the kitchen
    • We lose 30 lbs.

That judge is not only a liar, but will often change the goal.

When we reach the goal, if it's a specific, measurable achievement, our judge will allow us to be happy for a total of 5 minutes until it starts in on the "yeah, butt"s:

    • Yeah, but now we need to earn the respect of our boss
    • Yeah, but now we need to have a baby
    • Yeah, but now we need to remodel the house to 'make it our own'
    • Yeah, but now you need to 'tone up'

In today's podcast, I'm introducing a tool that will help you to celebrate your accomplishments more and create more happiness in your life.

  • Procrastination

We know when we're doing it. The question is how do we stop?

Some of us believe that procrastination serves us - that we do our best work when we put things off because we "work better under pressure".

The data shows that this is untrue. And many folks report that procrastination is actually unhelpful because it prevents them from having what they really want, and also feeling good about themselves.

If you struggle with procrastination, we're exploring how it impacts your health, and how to identify when it's happening, but more importantly, how to get out of it & start taking care of those things that are important to you.
