Hello, everyone. Oh, I should say, “happy new year”.  It’s the first Japanese Swotter in 2023. How are you doing? Today, we’ll practice useful expressions.  Here we go!

まずは、｢すみません sumimasen｣です。

            We’ll begin with “sumimasen”.  

 “すみませんsumimasen” can be “thank you”, “sorry” and  “excuse me”. Nowadays, some people say, “すいませんsuimasen”。

すみません。sumimasen

Say again, 

すみません。sumimasen

Dialogue 

A: Excuse me, you’ve dropped this….

B: あ、すみません。a, sumimasen.

            Thank you.

A: Can I help you? 

B: すみません。sumimasen.

            Thank you.

Now, you reply with “すみません sumimasen”.

You say: あ、すみません。sumimasen.

つぎは、｢どうも｣です。

            Next is “doumo”. 

It’s like “thanks” and actually we Japanese use “doumo” a lot every day.

We seldom say “さようならgood bye”. If you’ve asked for directions, then you can simply say “doumoどうもthanks”.

つぎは、｢じゃ(あ)｣、｢じゃ、また｣、｢では、また｣を れんしゅうします。

Next, we’ll practice “ja”, “ja, mata” and “dewa mata”.

A: Oh, is it your first trip to Japan? I hope you enjoy. See you.

You say: じゃ。

Dialogue 

A: Yes, you can take this bus. It stops in front of that temple.

You say: どうも。(どうも、じゃ。)

In case you talked to someone you know, “じゃ、また ja(dewa) mata” is better, as “またmata” means “again”.

Again,  you reply with “じゃ、また”.
