  • Don't You Remember? | A sensitive process, needs a sensitive touch

#026. Mike Cude is a licensed, Registered Respiratory Therapist and healthcare professional for 23 years, and a General Manager in the home care sector for 18 years.  He is a Certified Senior Advisor® and Certified Dementia Practitioner who specializes in senior living options and transitional care. He has been advising and working directly with seniors since 1999. A native of Arkansas, Mike has worked around the state throughout the duration of his professional career and is familiar with the offerings and amenities of the majority of the senior living communities, facilities, and agencies within the service area.

Mike spent 20 years in the home care industry; specifically, the DME/Home Medical Equipment industry, as a Registered Respiratory Therapist. During this time, he noticed families who had reached this transitional phase with a lot of questions and not a lot of answers. Such as:

    • What types of care options are available?
    • What can I afford?
    • Am I eligible for financial assistance?
    • Which communities provide the levels of care that I require?
    • Where do I even start?

#025. Jackie Parker,  Author of Where is Wilma?, writes... "after living with my mother-in-law who had Alzheimer's, I discovered that I needed to understand the emotions associated with her actions. Underneath her certain behaviors lied the various reasons our loved one may be acting out."  Jackie's 48 page book is a concise tender reflection of her journey with Wilma. Each detailed experience is concluded with a thoughtful life lesson.

Jackie is 62 yrs old, born in South Bend, Indiana. She has been married for 39 yrs, has 9 children and 17 grandchildren while working as a physical therapy tech for over 20 yrs.  Living her faith, she has shared her God-given gifts both as choir and vocalist...in retirement Jackie enjoys gardening and "swinging of porch."

  • Don't You Remember? | Gigi's early onset dementia family story

#024.  Gigi Gabriel is the Education and Outreach Manager at Alzheimer’s Arkansas. Her caregiving journey began around 10 years ago, when she became a caregiver to her mother with Younger Onset Alzheimer’s. She was a Pastry Chef, under 30 with small children at home. Like many caregivers, she made the decision to leave her career to care for her mother. The past few years, she has been very active with the Alzheimer’s Association, Arkansas Chapter. She has served as Mission Chair for the walk and is currently the AIM Ambassador. She was also chosen to speak about her caregiving experience at their yearly forum in Washington, DC. Through AIM, she was able to testify in front of the Arkansas House and Senate about her experience as a caregiver. The bill passed, and now we have bill HB1434- it creates an Alzheimer’s and dementia advisory council which provides the implementation of a state Alzheimer’s plan. Her passion to help caregivers brought her to Alzheimer’s Arkansas, where she continues to educate and advocate for caregivers.

  • Don't You Remember? | Sunday Sessions with Mom

#017.  A change of location for us this morning, but not without drama of course. In between the blowing of the nose, the sun blinding us and the giggles I share a new incident that effected us both deeply in the moment. And though she doesn't remember it I attempt to explain it without upsetting her to give you all a glimpse of how Alzheimer's can present itself if even for a brief time.

"The term "sundowning" refers to a state of confusion occurring in the late afternoon and spanning into the night. Sundowning can cause a variety of behaviors, such as confusion, anxiety, aggression or ignoring directions. Sundowning can also lead to pacing or wandering."
