#003. Receiving their Mother’s dementia diagnosis & already keenly aware of her desire to remain in her own home surrounded by her beloved cats, Linda & her brothers set out on a mission. Their journey was filled with endless phone calls, navigating complicated loop holes, investigating & educating themselves with the necessary tools to make this happen, until her death in 2019.
Linda’s message today, “don’t give up!”

#002. Claire Haun and I were introduced by a mutual friend because of our love for birds and photography. For several years we enjoyed weekend adventures birding and fellowshipping while traveling Arkansas. Both of us began to notice memory changes in our loved ones, thus shifting our focus to that of caregivers. Claire's husband subsequently passed away in 2020 six years after his Alzheimer’s diagnosis, she brings a unique perspective of both nurse & wife to share with us. Additionally, she list some valuable resources that helped her on her journey.
Resources:
1. Validation Therapy The Feil Method by Naomi Feil. (Excellent for communication)
2. Coach Broyles’ Playbook for Alzheimer’s Caregivers by the Broyles’ Family. (Helpful for establishing your attitude toward care giving)
3. Creating Moments of Joy Along the Alzheimer’s Journey by Jolene Brackey (Great resource for ideas for daily quality of life)
4. Mother’s Secret A Nutritionist View of Family & Alzheimer’s Disease by Marilyn Walls (Good nutritional resource)

#001. I was a caregiver for my father who had Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and I’m currently a caregiver for my mother with Alzheimer’s. Divorced and living in two different states, they were both diagnosed in 2017, but showed cognitive memory issues years prior. In that same year I moved my Dad into an apartment closer to me, literally 5 blocks away. Within a year I needed to hire professional help to take care of him as I divided my time between two households and working a full-time job. Some of it is still a blur, but the arrival of my brother in 2019 was pivotal as we both focused on making sure both Mom and Dad were safe and comfortable. Dad died November of 2019. This year I went part-time at my job to give Mom more focused attention and in return, pay more attention to my physical and mental health as we walk this journey together. I asked my friend and co-worker, Ashley King, to sit with me to help tell just part of my story.
