Today’s guest is Danny Alvarez, a member of the Florida House of Representatives representing District 69. Danny is a first-generation American, U.S. Army veteran, attorney, and currently serves as General Counsel for the Tampa Police Benevolent Association.

Before entering the legislature, Danny built a career in law, business consulting, and education, even teaching business law at the University of Tampa. Today, he plays a key role in shaping policy, serving as Chairman of the Criminal Justice Subcommittee and Vice Chair of the Security and Threat Assessment Committee.

In this episode, we’re going to talk about the intersection of law enforcement and legislation. What it looks like to go from supporting officers on the ground to writing the laws that govern them, and how policy decisions impact the reality of policing today.

Today’s guest is John Brooks, a retired police executive whose 43-year career in law enforcement spans service with the Miami Police Department, leadership roles in the Broward Sheriff’s Office, and ultimately as Chief of Police in Sunrise, Florida. He began as a patrol officer in 1975 and rose through the ranks over decades, retiring as chief in 2018. Along the way he led counter-terrorism efforts post-9/11, commanded large divisions, and became known for strategic leadership and community focus.
