Donuts and Devos

At Christmas, we hear about Gabriel and the angels and the shepherds, Joseph and Mary… and then we hear about the wise men. But who are the wise men? They don’t come to the manger where Jesus was born. They traveled from a long distance later, following a star, and looking for the king of the Jews. Looking for Jesus.

As with gladness men of oldDid the guiding star behold; As with joy they hailed its light,Leading onward, beaming bright; So, most gracious Lord, may weEvermore be led by Thee.As with joyful steps they sped,Savior, to Thy lowly bed,There to bend the knee beforeThee, whom heav'n and earth adore; So may we with willing feetEver seek Thy mercy seat.As they offered gifts most rareAt Thy cradle, rude and bare,So may we with holy joy,Pure and free from sin's alloy,All our costliest treasures bring,Christ, to Thee, our heav'nly King.Verses 1, 2, and 3 of As With Gladness Men of Old

Imagine you're a shepherd, and you’re going out to tend to your flock, just like you do every night. You go about your shepherding duties, keep track of the sheep, making sure they’re safe. And then out of nowehere, a great light fills the sky and all around you, it’s shining bright! And an angel shows up!! Would you be afraid?

It came upon a midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earthto touch their harps of gold:"Peace on the earth, goodwill to all, from heav'n's all-gracious king."The world in solemn stillness layto hear the angels sing. All you, beneath your heavy load,by care and guilt bent low,who toil along a dreary waywith painful steps and slow:look up, for golden is the hour, come swiftly on the wing, the Prince was born to bring you peace;of Him the angels sing. For lo, the days have come to passby prophets seen of old, when down into the circling yearscame Christ as was foretold. His word of peace shall to the earthGod's ancient promise bring, and all who take this gift will hearthe song the angels sing.Verses 1, 3, and 4 of It Came Upon A Midnight Clear

Gabriel visited Mary. Joseph married Mary! But who, exactly, is Mary? What made her so special? Absolutely nothing - except that God chose her to be the mother of His Son. Mary did not doubt God but believed what the angel Gabriel told her. She would give birth to the promised Messiah, the Savior the world had been waiting for.

Once in royal David's cityStood a lowly cattle shed,Where a mother laid her babyIn a manger for His bed:Mary was that mother mild,Jesus Christ her little child. He came down to earth from heaven,Who is God and Lord of all,And His shelter was a stable,And His cradle was a stall; With the poor and mean and lowlyLived on earth our Savior holy. For He is our childhood's pattern,Day by day like us He grew;He was little, weak, and helpless,Tears and smiles like us He knew; And He feels for all our sadness,And He shares in all our gladness. And our eyes at last shall see Him,Through His own redeeming love; For that child so dear and gentle,Is our Lord in heav'n above; And He leads His children onTo the place where He is gone.Verses 1, 2, 3, and 4 of Once In Royal David's City

We don't know too much about the earthly father of Jesus. He was a carpenter. He was a righteous and just man. He was a provider and guardian for his family. Joseph did what God wanted him to do, and became the adopted father of the Son of God.

"Who is Gabriel?" is the question we explore in this devotion of our Advent series. This angel who appeared to Zechariah, and then to Mary had a message for each of them that came directly from God. The song we sing is called "The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came." The lyrics are below to follow and sing along with us!

The angel Gabriel from heaven came,With wings as drifted snow, with eyes as flame:"All hail to thee, O lowly maiden Mary, most highly favored lady." Gloria!"For know a blessed mother thou shalt be,All generations laud and honor thee;Thy son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold, most highly favored lady." Gloria!Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ was bornIn Bethlehem all on a Christmas morn,And Christian folk throughout the world will ever say:"Most highly favored lady." Gloria!Verses 1, 2, and 4: The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came

Our Advent devotional series for kids and families is focusing on the "Who's Who?" of the Nativity story. Our first important person that comes into the Advent of Jesus Christ is John the Baptist. Who was he before all the locusts, baptizing, and beheading? What was his purpose? How can he help us prepare for Jesus' coming? We tackle those questions and more in our first advent devotion.

"On Jordan's banks the baptist's cryannounces that the Lord is nigh.Awake, and hearken, for he brings, glad tidings of the King of kings."Then cleansed be every life from sin,Make straight the way for God within, and let us all our hearts preparefor Christ to come and enter there. All praise eternal Son to TheeWhose advent sets Thy people free,Whom with the Father we adoreand Holy Spirit evermore,"Verses 1, 2, and 5: On Jordan's banks The Baptist's Cry

Happy Thanksgiving! It's that time of year that we focus on God's blessings and gifts to us, His children. Though we are undeserving, our Lord gives us so much to be thankful for. In this SPECIAL Thanksgiving Day devotion, we read through three Bible selections that help us focus on what we are thankful for and how we can show our gratitude to others and most importantly, our Lord and Savior.

"Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

The Israelites made a covenant with the Gibeonites, making an alliance with them without counseling God. The Gibeonites tricked Joshua to protect themselves. Now, the 5 Amorite kings joined together to attack Gibeon. Once again, the Lord fights for Israel and wins the battle with hailstone and a unique natural event that has never happened again!

"Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and moon, at the valley of Aijalon."

The people of Israel renewed their covenant with God. They were reminded of the law God had given to Moses, and were once again coming before God as His people, protected and loved under the covenant. We, too, have been washed clean and made new again from our sin through Jesus. WIth his death on the cross, he cleansed us from our sin and made us white as snow in God’s eyes.

"There was not a word of all that Moses commanded that Joshua did not read before all of Israel.”

It's "Take 2" for the Israelites at the city of Ai. Thanks to Achan's sin, their first attempt at taking over the city failed horribly. But now God's anger had cooled, and He once again tells Joshua to gather his men - the city of Ai would be theirs. A very creative and strategic battle plan by God brought Ai to the mercy of the Israelites, and they were victorious!

"And you shall do to Ai and its king what you did to Jericho and its king."Joshua 8:2a
