Donuts and Devos

The Sabbath was the seventh day of the week that the Lord wanted His people to observe and set aside as a day of rest. God knew that all creation would need rest, and so He made it a commandment: Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. The Israelites were commanded to set this time aside to rest and worship God. And we, too, continue to observe and keep the 3rd commandment by setting time aside to worship, attend church, reading God’s Word, pray, and have devotions.

"You shall kindle no fire in all your dwelling places on the Sabbath day."Exodus 35:3

The Israelites went from looking up to the Lord on Mount Sinai, to looking down on themselves on the earth. Wanting a new leader, they gave Aaron—Moses’ own brother—all their golden earrings and made a "god" for themselves.

And the LORD said to Moses,  “Go down, for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves."Exodus 32:7

With the Ten Commandments, God’s righteousness is revealed—that He is holy, perfect, the only God in whom we are to fear, love, and trust above all things.  As these commandments show God’s righteousness, they show God’s people what being His people looks like.  He tells us what to do and what not to do as His people.

"I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery."Exodus 20:1

The Israelites have reached Mount Sinai. Because of the people’s sinfulness, they aren’t able to stand directly before God. But God uses Moses to speak to His people and share His Word with them.

"...you shall be my treasured possession among all people's..."Exodus 19:5

Moses was going to wear himself out with the burden of solving all of Israel's problems on his own. Taking his father-in-law Jethro's advice, Moses appoints trusted men as leaders and becomes the people's representative before God.

"You shall represent the people before God and shall bring their cases to God."Exodus 18:19b

What, now they're complaining about being thirsty? Here's a tip: ask God for water! He will provide! But instead, the Israelites grumbled and quarreled against Moses and God, bemoaning their terrible "fate" and accusing God of abandoning them. Oh ye of little faith! God does provide, despite the unbelief of His people and brings forth water from a rock. He also gives us Jesus, the Bread and Water of Life.

And Moses said, "Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?"Exodus 17:2

It had been over a month since the Exodus and the crossing of the Red Sea.  Moses is leading the people to Mt. Sinai through the wilderness. There’s not much food in the wilderness, especially for the large number of Israelites! They begin grumbling and complaining, instead of asking God for food. But the Lord provided for them. The Lord gives His people bread in the morning. It came down from heaven and covered the land like a blanket of frost - manna from heaven!

Come near before the Lord, for He has heard your grumbling.Exodus 16:9

The crossing of the Red Sea was a triumphant victory of God against Pharaoh and the Egyptians. God defeated them, saving His people. So it was only natural for Moses to be inspired to sing out in praise and worship to God, declaring God's victory! This is the first song recorded in the Bible.  It’s a divinely inspired song; Moses didn’t write it down and then sing it. It came to him as he sang.

"The Lord God is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation."Exodus 15:2a

Songs

Most of the songs that Christians sing now continue to proclaim the great things God has done, especially Christ Jesus and His saving work. Songs and hymns teach the Christian faith and encourage us to remain in Christ.  They give us words to sing together in praise for what God has done for us through His Son.

God saved His people as they fleed Egypt. He showed them His salvation while they stood by and watched. Israel was powerless to save themselves – they faced certain slavery or death at the hands of the Egyptian army as they were beside the Red Sea. But salvation didn’t come to them by anything THEY did – only God had the power to save them. And He did!

Thus the Lord saved Israel from the hand of the Egyptians...Exodus 14:30

God was leading the Israelites out of Egypt and to the land that He had promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. This is where they would live with God in peace and rest and safety. And they wouldn’t be slaves anymore, but people of God’s household. But it wasn't an easy journey. God led them into the wilderness and guided them with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. But once again, Pharaoh's heart was hardened and he chases after his lost slave force.

The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night did not depart from before the people.Exodus 13:22

God never left His people. These pillars were always there for the people to see, and to know that the Lord was with them.
