Donuts and Devos

It was almost time for the Israelites to enter the Promised Land. But before they do, Moses spends some time reminding the people of God's covenant with them that was made on Mount Sinai. Among the laws and commandments that God desired His people to follow and obey, there wasone commandment that stood above the rest of them:

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”Deuteronomy 6:5

Moses was old and nearing the time of his death. He wasn’t going to be allowed to go into the land that God was going to give them. He had rebelled against God’s Word; he didn’t show the people that God’s Word was holy and absolute! So God punished him. Moses could see the land, but would not be living it. A leader was necessary to guide the people into the land. God chose Joshua to become Moses' successor.

“At his word they shall go out and at his word they shall come in.”Numbers 27:21b

Remember Balaam's talking donkey? It served it's purpose to show Balaam his foolishness and open his eyes to his sin of greed and lust for wealth. He was finally ready to hear God's Word, not ignore it. While Balak, prince of Moab, wanted Balaam to curse the Israelites, God had no intention of having His people be cursed. God had been leading his people this whole time, and this was the land He had promised them and He was going to fulfill His promise. Balaam’s words confirmed this in his four oracles that we read in Numbers 23-24.

"I see him but not now. I behold him, but not near."Numbers 24:17a

The Israelites are moving through the land, taking over tribes, and instilling fear into the king of Moab and Midian. They approach Balaam, a self-proclaimed soothsayer, and ask him to curse the Israelites so they might defeat them. God has other plans for Balaam, however, and uses Balaam's donkey to teach him a very important lesson.

"Go to your own land, for the Lord has refused to let me go with you."Numbers 22:13

The unbelieving Israelites who complained against God ended up getting what they asked for. “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness!” God wanted the Israelites to turn to Him with their fears and uncertainties and place their faith in Him. Instead the eople looked around them and decided that the situation was too difficult and scary to face. The consequence of their unbelief would be that instead of living in the Promised Land, they would wander in the wilderness for 40 years - a year for each of the 40 days that they spied out the land to begin with.

"And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years and shall suffer for your faithlessness..."Numbers 14:33

Despite God’s continuous faithfulness and miracles that He did for the Israelites, they quickly turned away from Him at the first sign of trouble. The people were scared of the report of strong men and fortified cities that inhabited the promised land. They didn't want to listen to Joshua and Caleb, but wanted to turn back to Egypt.  God didn’t know what else to do with this rebellious people but punish them, take their inheritance away from them, and give it to someone else.

"The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty..."Numbers 14:18

God had brought the people out of Egypt, freed them from slavery, and brought them through the wilderness to the edge of Canaan. And He gave Moses and very specific command.

"Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel."Numbers 13:2

This was the land that God had promised over and over to Abraham and to Isaac and to Jacob and  to the whole people of Israel. the land which they would make their home. God was going to give it to them. But first, they needed to know what they were dealing with, which is why one man from every tribe was chosen to spy out the land. This command from God was important so the people would be properly prepared for what they were about to enter upon.

We are back after the Christmas holidays and are continuing our journey with the Israelites after they escaped from Egypt by the power of God. God’s people have been camping out at Mt. Sinai. Moses has been receiving God’s Laws and ways for the people to live in their daily lives—the 10 commandments and the Levitical Law. And now they are finally getting ready to leave. But not before God speaks a blessing upon them.

"So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them."Numbers 6:27

The book of Leviticus is God’s Words to Moses to teach the priests and people how they should live. It tells them how to offer sacrifices to the Lord, and talks about the various festivals that God wanted them to follow during the year. These were the laws which the people followed, and we refer to them as the Levitical laws. In this devotion, we are going to categorize these laws into three groups: civil law, ceremonial law, and moral law.

"...you are to teach the people of Israel all the statutes that the Lord has spoken to them by Moses."Leviticus 10:11
