  • The Exodus | Ep. 057
The Israelites were trapped in Egypt for 430 years. Most of that time was spent in bondage, in slavery. After the final plague, Pharaoh finally let them go. The Israelites, foreign people, and even some Egyptians left Egypt in a mass exodus and God saved them all.

And the Lord had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have what they asked.Exodus 12:36

  • The Final Plague of Egypt | Ep. 056
God told Moses and Aaron what they would need to do to protect the Israelites from the final plague – the death of the firstborn son throughout the entire land of Egypt. These instructions marked the beginning of a new year for the people, a time that from then on was called the Passover.

Our Bible reading is from Exodus 12:21-32.

And there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house where someone was dead.Exodus 12:30b

A statute is a law or decree made by a sovereign or government or by God.  Moses tells the people that “You shall observe this rite as a statute for you and for your sons forever.” Every year after the first Passover, the Israelites would celebrate and remember Passover. They would remember the specific instructions God gave them for preparing the lamb to eat, to cover the doorways with blood and to be ready to leave Egypt.  God freed them from their bondage of slavery to the Egyptians. And God does the same for us under Jesus’ blood.

  • Passing Over God’s People | Ep. 055
The land of Egypt is devastated from the nine plagues that God sent after Pharaoh's unbelief and hardened heart, God threatens one more final plague - the death of every firstborn male. Except for the Iraelites - the angel of death will "pass over" them by the protection of a lamb's blood.

Our Bible reading is from Exodus 11 and 12.

"And when I see the blood, I will pass over you and no plague shall befall you to destroy you."Exodus 12:13

    Passover

God gave His people a way of salvation from the death of their firstborn sons—by the death of a lamb. The people were to take a lamb - a lamb as close to perfect looking as possible. Then they were to sacrifice it, take some of the blood, and paint the doorframes of their houses with it. When the Angel of death comes, he will see the lamb’s blood, and he will pass over their house, and their sons would be spared.

  • The Plagues of Egypt | Ep. 054
Pharaoh’s heart was hardened against God, which meant that he was rejecting God. God unleashed His judgment on Egypt, giving Pharaoh chance after chance to listen and obey. God didn’t want the people to suffer. He didn’t want Pharaoh to suffer. God was trying to show Pharaoh that He was the true Lord.

Our Bible readings over the 9 plagues come from selected verses in Exodus chapters 8-10.

So the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the people of Israel go, just as the Lord had spoken through Moses.Exodus 9:35

    9 Plagues

The plagues caused utter devastation across the land of Egypt. God delivered His people and kept them safe, however, by excluding the land of Goshen from the terrible happenings.

  • Staffs, Serpents and Signs | Ep. 053
God showed his power and supremacy over the wisdom and signs of the Egyptians. Nothing can stop the Lord from saving his people, Israel. Not Pharoah, not serpents, not even the devil. As Aaron's snake swallowed up the other snakes in front of Pharaoh, so will God conquer Satan, and swallow up evil and death forever, in the death and resurrection of Jesus for us.

Our Bible reading is Exodus 7:1-13.

The Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch out my hand against Egypt.Exodus 7:5

  • God Promises Deliverance | Ep. 052
The people of Israel were still in slavery, their work made even harder by Pharaoh's decree to take their straw away. "Why, O Lord?" cried Moses as he once again questioned his ability to do as God commanded and lead the people out of Egypt. Yet, God knew what was going to happen and was ready to deliver and redeem His people with His outstretched arm.

But the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron and gave them a charge about the people of Israel.Exodus 6:13

  • Idle People: Making Bricks Without Straw | Ep. 051
The people of Israel were truly oppressed in Egypt. Things were getting worse and worse, and it became more and more clear that these people needed a savior. God sends Moses to take the people away from this place of hardship and oppression. The people were ready to leave – they wanted to be freed from their horrible treatment and all the hard work they had to do every day. But Pharaoh doesn’t want to let them go! And so he makes their workload even harder!

Our Bible reading is from Exodus 5:1-23.

Thus says the Lord, "Let my people go."Exodus 5:1

    Idle People

Pharaoh called the Israelites an idle people because of their desire to worship God. Idle means to avoid doing work, being lazy, and spending time doing nothing. Clearly, the Hebrews were not idle people. They were being worked very hard, and they did want a time to rest and sacrifice to the Lord.  When we spend time in God’s Word, we are not wasting our time away or being lazy. We are learning about God, and His Word strengthens and teaches us for the work we do throughout the day.

  • Moses Returns To Egypt | Ep. 050
Moses set out on the journey back to Egypt, as God instructed him to do. But God sought Moses' life because they hadn't kept the covenant with God - they weren't circumcised. Circumcision was one of the visible signs that God commanded His Old Testament people to do to every male as a reminder that they were God’s people. Did Moses escape God's anger? Who saved him?

Our Bible reading is Exodus 4:18-31.

"But I will harden his heart so he will not let the people go."Exodus 4:21b

    Circumcision

Circumcision did involve the shedding of blood, pain, and a little suffering for males, since it could only to be done to males. It was an action God commanded His people to do in order to be part of His covenant.  Whenever they saw the circumcision, it reminded them they were God’s people. Circumcision in the Old Testament, in the Old Covenant for God’s People, was also a foreshadowing to the shedding of Jesus’ blood on the cross for us!

  • Moses Resists God’s Call | Ep. 049
Moses was struggling to accept what God wanted him to do, which was return to Egypt and set the Israelites free from their slavery. In this conversation with Moses through the burning bush, God used the signs of turning the staff into a snake and Moses’ hand to show Moses his power.

Our Bible reading is Exodus 4:1-17.

“Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.”Exodus 4:12

    Signs from God

God used signs in the Bible for various reasons. Sometimes signs were used to send a message or a warning, or in fulfillment of a promise. Only God Himself chose when He gave signs to His people. In our lives, we shouldn’t “ask” God to give us a “sign” to show us His will for us; His will is revealed through His Word, the Bible!

  • A Burning Bush: God Calls Moses | Ep. 048
God had a plan to save his people, the Israelites, from their slavery in Egypt. He spoke to Moses through a burning bush and told Moses to go back to Egypt. God was sending Moses to bring the people out of Egypt to safety. But Moses said, "Who am I to do this?" Moses was reluctant to do what God told him to do. But God had come down to save His people, through great signs and wonders, and through Moses, to bring them to the promised land.

Our Bible Reading is from Exodus 3:1-15.

God said to Moses, "I am who I AM. Say this to the people of Israel, I AM has sent me to you."Exodus 3:14

    I am who I AM

Moses wanted a name to give to the people, a name of the god who had sent him. God answers: God’s name is YHWH (Yahweh). It's the Hebrew name God gave Himself. In the English translation, the name “Yahweh” is printed LORD in all capital letters in the Old Testament and means “I AM".
