Julie Posselt is associate professor of education at the University of Southern California. She investigates institutionalized inequities in higher education, especially within selective universities, graduate education, and STEM disciplines.
Former Secretary of Education John B. King, now president and CEO of The Education Trust, talks about his passion for giving all learners, particularly those in poverty and prisons, access to higher education. He discusses with hosts Jon Fansmith and Lorelle Espinosa how his own personal experiences, his work in the federal government, and his work as an education advocate drive him to help students who just need a chance to succeed. Just a week after a district court judge rejected claims that Harvard University intentionally discriminates against Asian American applicants, Julie J. Park, associate professor of education at the University of Maryland, College Park, talks with hosts Jon Fansmith and Lorelle Espinosa about what this decision means for the future of diversity in higher education.
They also discuss why Asian American students' experiences don't always fit with the "model minority" stereotypes and what institutions can do to serve students from diverse backgrounds.
