Arizona Ranger Sam Burrack is a predator lying in wait. He's undercover as an outlaw to infiltrate a pair of vicious border gangs and bring them down. This mission has already had its share of casualties, and if Burrack has his say, there will be more. A cloud of dust rises as four men ride toward the Twisted Hills. The only thing between them and certain death at the hands of the Apaches is Sam, who also wants those men dead. But fighting in a land where gunfire draws a rain of arrows means silence is golden, and if Sam keeps his wits about him, he'll be painting these hills red.

    "ON THE RUN"
The Ranger undercover tracking and eventually becoming a member of the gang. Discovering who "Mr Big" is, lots of action and backstabbing. Men who have survived on the fringes of a so called society...no big ideas of grandeur..if you call descent food, a place to live..some sort of livelihood...rancher, store owner..just something of their own to keep the rain off your head. Men who wanted to become rich not by honest work, but by robbery, pillaging..anything and anyway to make a few dollars that never lasted. The Ranger doesn't seem to like this part of law, going undercover..Sometimes there isn't to much distance between lawmen and robbers..You know, why don't you read this adventure and you decide what your summation of these men and sometimes women outcome will be...
Another well written Ranger Sam Burrack western!
This is the 2nd part of a story that was started in, "Twisted Hills." This book is exciting, with powerful action, and even some surprising and enjoyable humor. The locales are also well-described, which I appreciated because it allowed me to form a vivid picture of what this part of the West was like back then. My only criticism is that sometimes the violence was too explicitly described.
    Excellent read!
Ralph Cotton outdid himself with this story. It was well written, the character development was tight and the storyline was incredible! As usual, Mr. Cotton draws you into the story and places you right next to the characters. So much so that in reading this book, I found myself worn out at times, hot and thirsty, sore, bruised, battered and more! After I finished it, I felt like I needed a vacation just to recover from the ride with Sam Burrack and the others.
Very well done, Ralph . . . very well done!
    Not all bad are bad
Not one of the books by this author but a good read anyway. A lot of brutality by all concerned such as Apaches and Mexican soldiers. I it could be true since life was battering those times.
    One great writer
One great writer, his books always keep you interested . It's hard to lay down once you start to read.as with all good writers they keep you interested ,that is a sign of very good writer, one that is very concern about what he writes. I rate him up there with Louis ,zane,Ralph compont and Charles g west

The Greatest Western Writer of the 21st Century
One man. One rifle. One way to take on the most vicious outlaws on the frontier....
In the acclaimed new series by William and J. A. Johnstone, the bounty hunter known as Flintlock brings his trusty muzzleloader and a motherlode of courage into the most bitter and vicious battle he's ever had to fight.
    Blood in the Bayou
Brewster Ritter had a warning for Flintlock: Do not cross the Sabine River. Ritter, the so-called Baron of the Bayou, is a vicious crime king still seething because Flintlock killed one of his gunmen in a Texas dustup. But Flintlock has his own powerful reasons for crossing into the nightmarish swamp country from East Texas. Now, in an eerie land of mysterious mists, haunting cypress trees, snakes, gators, and black-hearted, trigger-happy war hogs, Ritter is waiting for Flintlock with enough men and guns to kill him 10 times over. Flintlock knows what he's getting into, though, and losing is not an option. Because what's at stake is not just lives or Ritter's criminal kingdom but the future of the very soul and survival of this land.

    Flintlock Misses the Mark
Normally, Johnstone is one of the most reliable western writers in the market, but he slips up big time here. Flintlock isn't an interesting character, and comes across as poorly sketched and an undesirable main character. I'm going to skip any more books in this series and go back to Johnstone's other great westerns.
    Good Read
A good read, as are all of Johnstone's books.
    Kill or Die
One of the better Westerns I have read in a long, long time. A fast pace, great characters and enough humor to make you like the two main characters.
    Flintlock at his best
Great fun read you get to know flintlock & o hara,as a team you want to stay with
    Good Western
A good writer. Plenty of action. His descriptions tend to be on the gross side. A bit unnecessary for the story but then that is the style of this author.

    Publisher's Summary:
Riders of Judgment centers on the three Hammett brothers and their cousin Rosemary, whom all three love. To the oldest brother, Cain, falls the lot of avenging the murder of his father, grandfather, and brother. Cain - who is, in a sense, a cowboy Hamlet - is torn by conflicts within himself. He desires peace yet is forced to wear a gun. He is a law-abiding man by instinct yet has to take the law into his own hands. He is loved by a woman but rejects her because he feels unworthy of her love. Then one spring morning the cattle barons invade his territory, and Cain's hesitancy vanishes. One man's inner struggle becomes a fight to turn the cattle kingdom into a free country for the small stockman.

Stylistically Superior Western Genre - Fictional Tale of the Johnson County, Wyoming Range Wars
Riders of Judgment (1957) is historical fiction, a retelling of the Johnson County, Wyoming range war in April, 1892. The University of Nebraska Press reprinted Frederick Manfred's novel in 1982. It is also available in various paperback editions.
Although Manfred's account largely adheres to the actual historical event, he changed the names of the key characters. For example, Manfred's Cain Hammet replaces the actual Nate Champion that organized the small ranchers' Northern Wyoming Farmers and Stock Grower's Association (NWFSGA) to compete with the cattle barons' powerful Wyoming Stock Growers Association (WSGA).
The title of each chapter is a character - Cain, Dale, Harry, Rosemary (Rory), Hunt, Jesse, Mitch, and others. This structure allows the author to focus on characterization as well as on the action (confrontations, hangings, and ambushes). Manfred's shifting perspectives occasionally reveal deep misunderstandings and false assumptions made by both parties, although his account is largely sympathetic to the plight of the small ranchers.
Cain Hammet is a reluctant protagonist. Link Keeler, the murderer of Cain's grandpa some years ago, has recently returned to Johnson County (under the name Hunt Larson) as a deputized inspector of cattle charged with eliminating rustling. Unable to goad Hunt into a gun fight, Cain lets his hated adversary walk away. While admittedly killing a peace officer would be foolhardy, Cain's inaction ultimately makes matters worse.
Frederick Manfred's Riders of Judgment was the basis for the 2002 TV movie The Johnson County War.
Caution: In 2001 another respected Western author, Ralph Compton, published a novel with the same title, Riders of Judgment, that is also based on the Johnson County range war. I have not read Compton's western; the reader reviews rank it highly.
Thre are some great, detaile descriptions
Thre are some great, detailed descriptions, but it is really long and too drawn out in the first third of the book. Too much went into character background descriptions and relationships. Some of it should have been left to the reader's imagination through their interactions.
    I like all of Manfred's
Very enjoyable . I like all of Manfred's books
    Great book!
Very good read. Simple, but true story telling at its best. 5 books is not enough.
A book that tries to be a classic western, but fails.
The book takes quite a wile to get going and then never really does. The synopsis for the book itself is also incorrect. Cain, the main character, isn't exciting or interesting in the least.

    Mind and Body
HBWâs basic philosophy was that we are given a mind to learn and a body to work. To be a whole man, satisfaction in the productive use of both is required of us. This idea is seen in all of his novels but comes out more directly in this one.
His appreciation of horses is also obvious in many of his works, but it is more directly addressed here.
I have read most of HBWâs novels and recommend them to others even though I can never rate them 5 stars. He is a great writer until the conclusions which often verge on hokum. This book is no exception. Our hero rides off alone into the sunset.

His books really makes a person think.

No mountains in North Dakota (as in the movie)
I'm not sure if the word "plot" is one I would use when describing a non-fiction work.
After seeing the movie, The Revenant, I wanted to read the book because I have hunted in some of the areas described and none were depicted accurately in the movie. There are NO mountains in North Dakota or north central South Dakota.
As I read the book, I felt a bit exhausted with the ever, physical challenge of covering long distances while crawling on one's belly. It is an amazing story and one that I thoroughly enjoyed reading.
Exciting story of Hugh Glass, mountain man and grizzly attack survivor in the early west.
There is a lot of controversy over the story of Hugh Glass. I read the book not for historical accuracy, but the basic story of Glass surviving a near fatal grizzly attack and getting back to Fort Kiowa some 200 mile journey. The story "drags" until Glass is attacked by the grizzly, after that the story moves quickly. Reading information on Wikipedia about Hugh Glass you would think he make the whole journey crawling, however much of the journey was in a dugout boat that Glass constructed. The book is entertaining if not totally historically accurate.
    Good information
Good read interesting how different from Reverant

Old West Christmas story that reminds me of how lucky we are to have modern laws and medicine. Wonderful characters round out a good story, but beware, not a typical cozy Hallmark Christmas.
    Great read
Another great book by Wm. W. Johnstone , and J. A. Johnstone, as they weave a western novel, and some historical medical information. I enjoyed this book very much.
    Smoked out!
I'm a huge westerns fan. I'm a huge smoke Jensen fan. And a huge Christmas fan. It's a no brainier. HowwwwwwEverrr.... This book is just not very ....ummm.... Meaty. It's very loose. There's not a lot to hold the listener. There's not a lot of "smokiness" to it. Above all... It's predictable. If I had a dollar for every time I looked at my iPad and rolled my eyes and said exactly what was coming next in a sort of nonchalant, all-knowing,back to the future sort of way...well,then, I'd have an extra 16 or 17 bucks. I don't know, this is the first review I've left, I felt responsible to let other Smoke lovers, that this individual title sucks!!

The next gritty, gun-slinging entry in the New York Times best-selling series, featuring itinerant lawmen Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch.
Territorial Marshals Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch are back in Appaloosa, where their work enforcing the law has been exceptionally quiet. All that is about to change. An ominous storm rolls in, and along with it a band of night riders with a devious scheme, who show up at the Rio Blanco camp, where a three-hundred-foot bridge is under construction.
Appaloosa's Sheriff Sledge Driskill and his deputies are the first to respond, but as the storm grows more threatening, news of troubles at the bridge escalate and the Sheriff and his deputies go missing.
Virgil and Everett saddle up to sort things out but before they do the hard drinking, Beauregard Beauchamp arrives in Appaloosa with his Theatrical Extravaganza troupe and the promise of the best in lively entertainment west of the Mississippi. With the troupe comes a lovely and mysterious fortune-teller who is set on saving Everett from imminent but indefinable danger.
The trouble at the bridge, the missing lawmen, the new arrivals, and Everett's shoot-out in front of Hal's Café aren't the only things on Cole and Hitch's plate as a gang of unsavory soldiers ease into town with a shady alibi, shadier intentions, and a soon-to-be-discovered wake of destruction.
As clouds over Appaloosa continue to gather, things get much worse for Cole and Hitch....

    Ugh...no more
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
The book: This is Knott's "Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull"..... OMG, really cowboys and aliens don't go together. Why oh why - I don't know what she is supposed to be --- a dream, an alien, a runaway..... but it is just not what a western novel should have in it. Keep the mystics, aliens, angels and fairies in sci fi and out of the beloved Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch novels.
Would you ever listen to anything by Robert Knott again?
I thought Knott would eventually get the grove of Parker's style....but not even close, actual getting farther away from it.
Would you be willing to try another one of Rex Linns performances?
The audio format: I know this is the second reading by Rex Linn....but I miss Titus Welliver and his style and diction. Linn's format is corny at best and most of the time a little annoying.
    Interesting
Have to get used to the writing style,he said. Story had a few twists,he said, but mostly just a good light story to enjoy and then forget, he said.
    Not impressed/ but good story
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The Story it self is good
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I would use fewer "god damms" they were interrupting and not properly used, just inserted to be inserted. did not add anything to the story, and was just used to many times. It's not necessary to use cruse words to make a good exciting story, the excitement was there with our them.
What about Rex Linns performance did you like?
Great performance with lots of characters. Good voice, He held my attention without loosing me.
Could you see Robert B. Parker's The Bridge being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
    This is absolutely movie material
    Any additional comments?
I hope there is enough Robert B. Parker material that the series can continue.

    Better Narrator Needed
The narrator adds a soft "a" sound to the end of many words. Very distracting.
    Better read than a listen
I read the first book in the series and enjoyed it. The library didn't have the second one available, so I thought I would listen to it hear. Bad decision. The story was good, but the narrator was horrible. She sounded like she had something in her mouth the whole time. It was very destracting.
Don't waste your credits or money.

    A teenage girl.

In 1886, Gretta Pope wakes one morning to discover that her husband is gone. Ulysses Pope has left his family behind on the far edge of Minnesotas western prairie, with only the briefest of notes and no explanation for why he left or where hes headed. It doesnt take long for Grettas young sons, Eli and Danny, to set off after him, following the scant clues they can find, jumping trains to get where they need to go, and ending up in the rugged badlands of Montana.
Short on money and beleaguered by a treacherous landlord, Gretta has no choice but to seek out her sons and her husband as well, leading her to the doorstep of a woman who seems intent on making Ulysses her own. While out in the Western wilderness, the boys find that the closer they come to Ulyssess trail, the greater the perils that confront them - until each is faced with a choice about whom they will defend, and who they will become. Engers breathtaking portrait of the vast plains landscape is matched by the rich expanse of his characters emotional terrain, as pivotal historical events - the bloody turmoil of expansionism, the near total demise of the bison herds, and the subjugation of the Plains Indians - blend seamlessly with the intimate story of a familys sacrifice and devotion.
