Mostly Predictable, But Totally Likable
You don't usually think of zany, slapstick dino-hamster school-daze books as character studies, but that's sort of what you have here. All of the plot complications - mutant hamster, phys ed competition, science fair, bully, miss perfect classmate, disc golf obsessed gal pal, burnt out teacher - just swirl around so that we can see how our likable hero handles the punches.
The story is told in the first person by our hero Sam Gibbs. He's an under-the-radar kind of guy, especially since his very talented caricatures of his classmates got passed around and now pretty much everyone is mad at him. But, when the class hamster needs protecting, well it turns out Sam has a soft spot for the little critter and is willing to navigate increasingly bizarre obstacles in his quest to save the weird little class pet.
In my experience most books like this turn on odd plot twists, strange predicaments, and the antic behavior of the characters. That's all in here, but there's more. Sam is observant and funny. His commentary, (both in conversational form and as interior monologues), is perceptive and clever, and while he isn't sarcastic or ironic there is just a bit of edge in a lot of what he says and does. While the action can be manic or frantic, dialogue is often dry and deadpan. So, the classic standard bully is sometimes a very wise student of the art and science of bullying. The annoying perfect girl is pitched just right, but gets to counterpunch instead of just being mocked. The burned out teacher is like some nutsy Greek chorus commenting on the action from the background. And, there are literally dozens of one-liners and one-off jokes that get tossed around from page to page. (The takedown of the middle school science fair is knowing, and priceless.)
So, I think it's a good thing when the least interesting thing in a hamstersaurus book is the hamstersaurus. Sure, come for that premise, but stay for the fresh, snappy writing, the funny and clever drawings, the throwaway bits, and the easy-to-root-for hero.
