Earth is in danger! The only things that can save our planet are six essential elements scattered throughout the galaxy. And it is up to the Voyagers - a team of four kids and an alien - to gather them all and return to Earth.
It isn't just the Voyagers out in space - they've got company in the form of Team Omega. Omegas have their own reasons for wanting the elements - and they'll do anything to win. The third planet, Aqua-Gen, has unbelievable new challenges in store. Sea monsters, pirates.... Both teams better know how to swim.

and the greater good. It also teaches about forgiveness
My 10-year-old son and I always have a book going that we are reading together. I read one chapter aloud to him each night. We started with the first book of this series after his grandmother randomly picked it up at a BJs, but we were quickly addicted. The last two books we had to actually wait to be published and it was agony!
The premise is really interesting and, in terms of lessons, teaches kids about loyalty, perseverance, sacrifice, teamwork, and the greater good. It also teaches about forgiveness, taking the high road, and being innovative. Along with all of that, it's a fun read with a lot of action, adventure, and fantastical places and things.
In terms of diversity, there's a really good/thoughtful split. The kids are split evenly between boys and girls and the team is international, so there are plenty of cultures represented. One of the main characters is disabled and totally awesome, which is fantastic since there is such a tendency towards defaulting to the (white) able-bodied protagonist. We read all of them as quickly as they could come out and we're keeping our fingers crossed for some kind of sequel!
Another interesting thing about the series is that each entry was written by a different author. This could be disjointed but actually works nicely. The subtle variations in writing style makes it feel more like getting a look at the characters from a different angle rather than from a different universe entirely.
Fun series for family reading
These books are fun to read together. We take turns reading, and stop and talk about what might happen next. Lots of opportunities for kids to think about why something happened the way it did, and what they might do in the Voyagers' situation. Pretty quick read, too, so my kids stay focused and we can read a chapter or two each night. I have two boys (3rd and 6th grade) and it's important to me that we read stories with interesting female characters. These have a decent balance of girls/boys, with female characters as complex/strong as the male characters. We're flying through this series, and hope for more beyond book six!
Great series for adventure lovers...
As a children's librarian who also purchases books for K-8 students, I get a first-hand look at the popularity of children's books. I've been very happy with the Voyagers series. I first added book 1 to see how it would do, and I had several requests for the second book. I ended up adding all six and so far they have been flying off the shelves. There is adventure and suspense, but it's appropriate in language and subject matter.
