Durch die Einführung der Eisenbahn wurde zu reisen vereinzelt zwar erleichtert, Ziegenböcke im Abteil oder Körbe voller Fisch bei sommerlichen Temperaturen waren jedoch kein Vergnügen. Ungewohnte Speisen und deren Zubereitung machten Fontanes Magen und Darm unterwegs zu schaffen. 'Jeder Ort in Deutschland scheitert am Örtchen', schrieb der Schriftsteller, der in Briefen an seine Frau oft über den Zustand des 'Örtchens', der Fremdenzimmer und seiner Gesundheit klagte. Zu den Verdauungsbeschwerden kamen häufig Erkältungen und Seekrankheit. Dem passionierten Briefschreiber Fontane verdanken wir einen sehr persönlichen, wachen Blick auf das sich modernisierende 19. Jahrhundert. Die in seinen Reisebriefen beschriebenen Vorkommnisse mögen nicht immer hoffähig sein, für das Publikum heutzutage sind sie vielleicht gerade deshalb meist ein Quell der Erheiterung.
