    Title: Shut Your Eyes Tight
    Subtitle: Dave Gurney, Book 2
    Author: John Verdon
    Narrator: Scott Brick
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 17 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-12-11
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 431 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
When he was the NYPDs top homicide investigator, Dave Gurney was never comfortable with the label the press gave him: super detective. He was simply a man who, when faced with a puzzle, wanted to know. He was called to the investigative hunt by the presumptuous arrogance of murderers - by their smug belief that they could kill without leaving a trace. There was always a trace, Gurney believed.
Except what if, one day, there wasnt?
Dave Gurney, a few months past the Mellery case that pulled him out of retirement and then nearly killed him, is trying once again to adjust to his country houses bucolic rhythms when he receives a call about a case so seductively bewildering that the thought of not looking into it seems unimaginable - even if his beloved wife, Madeleine, would rather he do anything but.
The facts of what has occurred are horrible: a blushing bride, newly wed to an eminent psychiatrist and just minutes from hearing her congratulatory toast, is found decapitated, her head apparently severed by a machete. Though police investigators believe that a Mexican gardener killed the young woman in a fit of jealous fury, the victims mother -a chilly high-society beauty - is having none of it. Reluctantly drawn in, Dave is quickly buffeted by a series of revelations that transform the bizarrely monstrous into the monstrously bizarre.
Underneath it all may exist one of the darkest criminal schemes imaginable. And as Gurney begins deciphering its grotesque outlines, some of his most cherished assumptions about himself are challenged, causing him to stare into an abyss so deep that it threatens to swallow not just him but Madeleine, too.
Desperate to protect Madeleine and bring an end to the madness, Gurney ultimately discovers that the killer has left a trace after all. Unfortunately, the revelation may come too late to save his own life.
With Shut Your Eyes Tight, John Verdon delivers on the promise of his internationally best-selling debut, Think of a Number, creating a portrait of evil let loose across generations that is as rife with moments of touching humanity as it is with spellbinding images of perversity.
    Critic Reviews:
"Verdon, who hit a home run with his debut novel, Think of a Number, has now nailed another one." (Booklist)
"Verdon follows Think of a Number, his sensational debut featuring retired NYPD detective Dave Gurney, with this standout sequel, set a year later [with] a bizarre, high-profile murderan apparent impossibility involving the murder weapon, and once again a relationship in crisis." (Publishers Weekly)

    An excellent read
The author managed to write an entertaining doozy of a story while still being plausible. Psychological insights were deep and characters fascinating. I didn't want the book to end.
    Captivating and unpredictible.
The story was put together very well. Good insight to the main character and how his personal life affected the tasks he decided to take on. The plot is interesting and reasonable, and it kept me in the dark to the end. The narrator is very talented; he used lots of distinctive voices and personalities so effectively that I knew who it "was" even before an identification of a character change. I enjoyed this story quite a bit.
    Better than the first one!
    I am loving this author.

    Publisher's Summary:
No one takes readers to the dark side and back with more razor-sharp jolts and sheer suspense than the storytelling master behind Ice Cold and The Keepsake. When New York Times best-selling author Tess Gerritsen has a tale to tell, put yourself in her expert hands and prepare for the shocks and thrills that are certain to follow.
Every crime scene tells a story. Some keep you awake at night. Others haunt your dreams. The grisly display homicide cop Jane Rizzoli finds in Bostons Chinatown will do both.
In the murky shadows of an alley lies a females severed hand. On the tenement rooftop above is the corpse belonging to that hand, a red-haired woman dressed all in black, her head nearly severed. Two strands of silver hair not human cling to her body. They are Rizzolis only clues, but theyre enough for her and medical examiner Maura Isles to make the startling discovery: that this violent death had a chilling prequel.
Nineteen years earlier, a horrifying murder-suicide in a Chinatown restaurant left five people dead. But one woman connected to that massacre is still alive: a mysterious martial arts master who knows a secret she dares not tell, a secret that lives and breathes in the shadows of Chinatown. A secret that may not even be human. Now shes the target of someone, or something, deeply and relentlessly evil.
Cracking a crime resonating with bone-chilling echoes of an ancient Chinese legend, Rizzoli and Isles must outwit an unseen enemy with centuries of cunning and a swift, avenging blade.

    Victim Six
Thoroughly enjoyed the story but the narration drove me to distraction. The main voice sounded good but all the other characters sounded very nasal and like children. This is a book better read from a hard copy rather than audio.
    Too slow
This is a real slow burn. I kept waiting for a great story but it never came.
    Very disappointed
The narration was the worst I think I have ever listened to. The main character was good but when he did the other characters it was painful. The story jumped around and some of the characters were written as if they had no brain whatsoever.
Not sure why the low ratings-my opinion differs
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
With out a doubt. I thought it was such a good book.
Which character as performed by Terry Rose was your favorite?
I thought he did a Great job with the whole book. His portrayal of the one Canadian father was a little Over the top but other then that I thought it was excellent. His narration of the male antagonist was Perfect! I will listen to other books narrated by him.
    Any additional comments?
I really liked this book. Yes, the listener knows who the culprits are almost right from the beginning but I thought that added to the suspense. I did mot think this was predictable in any way and each time a new victim was taken i found myself hoping that one would get away. Each was different but likable. You listen to the gruesome details and the next scene depicts them interacting "normally", taking their child to school and talking to family (who just so happens to be the reporter covering the murders). The conclusion leaves you with a foreboding feeling that makes you want to write in one more chapter and give it a happy ending. This does not in anyway spoil the book, very good and I will definitely purchase the next in the series.
This is the most scared I've felt reading a book.
It's hard to believe what people are capable of. This is a wild ride. One I'm glad I only have to live I fiction. Great writing as always. I just prefer less chill!

    Members Reviews:
    Sadistic Story
Although some of the other Jack Daniels books have a humorous tinge to them, this book left me feeling yucky! It was horribly gruesome and sexually sadistic. I have enjoyed other books in this series more. The plot did not flow well either. It seemed that the horrific tortures to people were weighted more than the actual plot. Not a very good read for relaxation.
    Jumps Around
I love to listen to the Jack Daniels series when I'm driving. Light enough approach, some humor, likeable characters, and a pretty good plot line. While I enjoyed Shaken it was a little hard to follow because it jumps between time periods (15 years ago, a few years ago, and current day). You can follow along but it is distracting to be reminder at the beginning of each chapter what time period you are in. Not Konrath's best.
    Great book! Nonstop suspense
I read where the author said this is a good book to start with, because it is in the present but has flashbacks of Jack's life throughout. It was my first read on JA Konrath, and certainly sparked my interest to get the full background of Jack Daniels. She seems to be an intriguing character with lots of colorful colleagues, that I want to hear more about. So, I'm going back to Whiskey Sour and read my way through the series. This book is the prequel to Stirred, which puts Jack up against Blake Crouch's Luther Kite character, introduced in Desert Places. Should be interesting.
    Jumps back and forth
The order of story, jumping between three different time periods, was not enjoyable. I think J A Konrath has done this in previous books, but not to this extent. I listen to audio books while driving, in about 45 minute segments. It might take me 8-10 time periods to get through an audio book. I kept getting confused with where I was in the story. (The Jack Daniels character is one I know well as I have listened to all previous books, so I had a solid grasp of Jack's life. This still didn't help.)
I think I saw an option to listen to the book in chronological order. I would recommend that.
I still gave it 4 stars as I like the characters; they make me chuckle.
    Sliding Timeline
This is the seventh in the Jack Daniels series and my first by J.A. Conrath, the combination of good characters and intrigue was absolutely what kept it interesting for me.

    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 41 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Vachss has reinvented detective fiction and, in the person of Burke, his haunted, hell-ridden P.I., has given listeners a new kind of hero.
Investigating an epidemic of apparent suicides among the teenagers of a wealthy suburb, Burke discovers a sinister connection between the anguish of the young and the activities of an elite sadomasochistic underground.
    Critic Reviews:
"Burke's return is welcome - his superstud act may be extreme here, but he's one of the most fascinating male characters in crime fiction; and as usual, Vachss controls his narrative, cut up into bullet-sized chapters, with admirable precision." (Kirkus Reviews)
"Deliciously scummy....His bad guys are memorably heinous." (Washington Post Book World)
    Members Reviews:
    The best Burke novel yet...
Great story line, great characters, super story development. Building to an unexpected outcome. Vachss has done it again. I can't wait to start the next in the series.
"Down In The Zero" is only slightly Above Average
"Down In The Zero" is Andrew Vachss' seventh novel featuring Burke, the hard-boiled, in-your-face, ex-con detective, who still isn't sure on which side of the law he prefers to operate. Abandoned at birth, father and mother unknown, Burke has no real first name. "Baby boy" is the name on his birth certificate. He is a survivor. He's also a standup guy. The novel is set in early 1990s NYC, just after Mayor Guiliani came to office with the intent to clean up the City's mean streets.
I have read the six previous Burke books and have became so fascinated with this complex character, and with the strange folks who people his world, that I will probably go on to read the entire series. I am addicted. If you are a Vachss/Burke fan, or have the potential to become one, I would suggest that you try to read the books in order. Of course, every novel stands on its own, independent of the others, but the growth and development of the characters are continual. There are also references to past events, and for a richer reading experience it is helpful to know the history. If you're just looking for a good read, and not interested in becoming a Burke maven, then by all means, read at random.
Throughout this book Burke mourns the horribly violent death of a little boy for which he feels responsible, (these events took place in a previous novel). He finds himself in a black place - the Zero, he calls it - "a deep black hole you dive into," and he is unable to climb out. It is not death, but this abyss may be worse than death because one still feels the intense pain of the living.
Then he receives a phone call from a troubled teen who fears for his life. The boy, a rich kid from the Connecticut suburbs is the son of a woman from Burke's past - a ghost from long ago who once saved his skin. He feels like he owes her a favor and so takes a trip to the burbs and the world of the super wealthy. Here he discovers a string of inexplicable teen suicides all linked to a common experience at a psychiatric clinic.
Burke also becomes involved with a woman, Fancy, a friend of his friend and a member of an elite private sex club. She is definitely not a "vanilla sex" lady. Fancy introduces Burke to the world of S&M, D&S, and encourages him to participate. She is even willing to switch for him and play the submissive.

"Highly unusual ... exciting and original.... It starts with a violent death in the lobby of the legendary Savoy Hotel and quickly expands to include art vandalism, Gilbert and Sullivan, and a host of other peculiarities." (Chicago Tribune)
    Members Reviews:
Almost 4 stars, but not quite
For me, the strength of the Bryant and May mysteries lie in the characters. This novel is no exception. Bryant, May, and Longbright come across as real people. I like these people, and I'm willing to put up with a lot for their sakes.
The problems with this novel start with its complexity. Even the author seems unable to keep the twisting snarl of plot lines straight. Information is repeated, facts are missed, and behaviors are left unexplained. The villains in this novel seem to be omnipotent, always appearing in just the right places at just the right times. The coincidences we as readers are asked to believe are off the charts. The heart of the mystery is contained in the title, and we are asked to grant the invention of a device that is impossible for anyone who understands what mechanics can deliver and what they cannot. In particular, fuzzy logic is something that we still haven't even begun to master in the twenty-first century--and yet the plot of this novel doesn't click forward without it.As a fictional device, it's no less implausible than Wells' time machine. Even if we concede this one suspension of disbelief, the behavior of the main villain destroys the illusion. The novel only works if we assume the victims are idiots, which the author does.
This is because this novel relies heavily on criticism of the class system that existed in Britain throughout much of its imperial history. It panders to the common belief that all rich people are undeserving and stupid. That they're greedy is a fact backed up by studies. That a few of them are stupid is a certainty. Perhaps I'm just an American and can't fathom the hatred a typical Brit has for anyone born into privilege--or perhaps it's just an ax the author wanted to grind and so grind it throughout the novel he did.
In addition, the political correctness of the novel reflects a modern sensibility that seems out of place at the end of 1973. This can be forgiven as these novels represent memories of one of the main characters rather than an accurate portrayal of that time. However, the telling of the memories colored by modern viewpoints seems unnecessary and feels again like the author's attempt to thrust forward personal inclinations.
I applaud the author's attempt at complexity in this novel. The case covered is pefect for the Peculiar Crimes unit, and given that the coincidences happened as written, it would indeed be difficult to solve. I think Tim Goodman does an excellent job with the performance and the ending is fast-paced and exciting, if also a bit stupid.

    Publisher's Summary:
Walter Mosley and his new hero, Leonid McGill, are back in the new New York Times best-selling mystery series that's already being hailed as a classic of contemporary noir.
Leonid McGill - the protagonist introduced in The Long Fall, the book that returned Walter Mosley to best-seller lists nationwide - is still fighting to stick to his reformed ways while the world around him pulls him in every other direction. He has split up with his girlfriend, Aura, because his new self won't let him leave his wife - but then Aura's new boyfriend starts angling to get Leonid kicked out of his prime, top-of-theskyscraper office space.
Meanwhile, one of his sons seems to have found true love - but the girl has a shady past that's all of sudden threatening the whole McGill family. And his other son, the charming rogue Twilliam, is doing nothing but enabling the crisis.
Most ominously of all, Alfonse Rinaldo, the mysterious power-behind- the-throne at City Hall, the fixer who seems to control every little thing that happens in New York City, has a problem that even he can't fix - and he's come to Leonid for help.
It seems a young woman has disappeared, leaving murder in her wake, and it means everything to Rinaldo to track her down. But he won't tell McGill his motives, which doesn't quite square with the new company policy - but turning down Rinaldo is almost impossible to even contemplate.
Known to Evil delivers on all the promise of the characters and story lines introduced in The Long Fall, and then some. It careens fast and deep into gritty, glittery contemporary Manhattan, making the city pulse in a whole new way, and it firmly establishes Leonid McGill as one of the mystery world's most iconic, charismatic leading men.

    The EYES have it...BRAVO!
I am completely in Love...with Walter Mosely, Leonid McGill and Mirron Willis. I would like to thank the director and producer for such an excellent execution of work.
The constant mention of Leonid's physical stature and combative abilities, exudes strength and creates this super hero complex. He makes me feel his toughness and invincibility with his awareness of self.
Mosley captures the individuality of his supporting characters through the description of their eyes.
The eyes are the windows to the soul.
The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness. Matthew 6:22&23

    Publisher's Summary:
Sequel to Hamilton's award-winning first novel (A Cold Day in Paradise), the story returns us to the small town of Paradise, Michigan where ex-Detroit police detective and reluctant private investigator, Alex McKnight, rents out small cabins to snowmobilers and tried to bury his demons under the snow he plows each day.
Alex is content with his low-key existence, until a young Native American woman asks for his help ostensibly to escape an abusive lover and then disappears without a trace from one of his cabins. Feeling responsible, Alex begins a frantic search, swatting away his self-appointed partner the towns favorite fool until the man surprises him. Its a search that leads to encounters with a variety of unsavory types, each with his own agenda, and to some extremely unpleasant discoveries by McKnight himself as he forcibly learns that criminal sadism knows no geographic boundaries and that the motives of both good and evil people can lead to disaster.
Hamilton's crisp, evocative style and refreshingly genuine cast of characters cements his place among todays most talented crime fiction writers. And his uniquely atmospheric rendering of place especially the relentlessly frigid winter of Michigans Upper Peninsula will send a palpable shiver down the listeners spine. Listeners will want to bundle up and settle in.

Outstanding dialog and cast of characters
This series is very well written, the characters are wonderful and the chemistry between individuals is beautifully developed. I really like the development of the main character and his "partner", it continues from the first novel and develops very well in this sequel. As in the first story the ending is a surprise and plausible although well concealed. There is more action in this story but it is the steady building tension that holds the readers interest. This is a well written book, it brings the reader into this community and makes you a part of the conversation more than being a spectator. A great find and highly recommended.
    Great Book.
I listened to this book non-stop and would listen to it again. I thought the author did a great job as did the narrator. It's well worth the time. Great book.
    excellent!
I thought the narration was A+. story was well written. very good description of the Uppers.
    Couldn't put the book down
A completely enjoyable read - with plenty of twists and turns. I never expected the ending as it turned out.
Amateurish narration made a so-so book even worse
I had read (book not audiobook) a previous Alex McKnight book and found it entertaining so I thought I'd try the next in the series on audiobook. What a mistake. I cannot decide if the writing was poor or the narration made it sound poor but this audiobook is a dud. The narration was just horrible. It sounded like a grade schooler reading out loud to a class and trying to 'act' as he read. It made the character's incessant overthinking that much more painful and poor Leon sounded like the village idiot.
Never again will I listen to a book with this narrator.
