Lyndon B. Johnson is president, Beatlemania is in overdrive, and gasoline costs 30 cents a gallon when Ned Parker retires as constable in Center Springs, Texas. But his plan to live a quiet life as a cotton farmer is torpedoed. A phone call leads Ned to a body in the Red River and into the urgent investigation headed by his nephew, the newly elected constable Cody Parker. Together they work to head off a multistate killing spree that sets northeast Texas on fire.
As the weeks pass, Neds grandchildren, ten-year-old Top and his tomboy cousin Pepper, struggle with personal issues resulting from their traumatic experiences at the Rock Hole only months before. They now find themselves in the middle of a nightmare for which no one can be prepared.
Cody and Deputy John Washington, the law south of the tracks, follow a lead from their small community to the long-abandoned Cotton Exchange warehouse in Chisum, which they are stunned to find packed full of the towns cast-off garbage and riddled with booby-trapped passageways and dark burrows. Despite Neds warnings, Cody enters the building and finds himself relying on his recent military experiences to save both himself and Big John. Unfortunately, the trail doesnt end there, and the killing spree continues.

    Claustophobics Need Not Apply
I really liked the first book in this series, and was looking forward to this one. While the characters, small western town setting, narrator and writing is good, the charm of the first book was missing for me.The last third of the novel has characters traveling through a nightmare of trash tunnels in what can only be described as a hoarder's Taj Mahal. While I understand the Vietnam reference, and the skill with which this is presented, I thought the the story line was buried by the author's drive to show us the bravery, skills, trauma, and horror experienced by US soldiers who served as "tunnel rats" in Vietnam. It is an important topic, but completely overpowered the plot for me. Frankly, it was all a bit too unbelievable and claustrophobic, and I just wanted the book to end. BUT, I am not giving up on this series.

All the evidence points that way, but the circumstances are decidedly suspicious.

    Always Entertaining
These books are usually narrated by Penelope Keith, so it was with a bit of trepidation I bought this one narrated by Diana Bishop, whose work I am unfamiliar with.
However, there is no need for concern. Diana is wonderful. Very similar voice to Penelope's. The beauty of these stories for me lies in the frankness with which the character of Agatha Raisin is laid bare for us.
    Horrible Narration
As ever this is typical Agatha up to her usual escapades resulting in a humorous Miss Marple type adventure. However, for those listeners used to Penelope Keith's voice on this series be warned that this is a different narrator who at times sounds dreary and rarely gives characters a distinctive voice (unlike Ms Keith). This not only takes a lot of the normal fun out of the book but also made it difficult to follow; i.e. who was talking to whom.
    Missing Penelope Keith
An excellent book, M.C. Beaton, as always, weaves a web of evil around the Cotswold villages
However, being used to PK narrating the Agatha Raisin books, I found this to be missing that special element
    Enjoyable easy listen
I enjoyed listening to this. The narrator was good... not annoying like some. The story line was light but enjoyable. Kept me entertained. Light dectective stuff so doesn't bog down your mind. Relaxing fun.
    Another great Agatha Raisin story
A great story both touching and funny beautifully narrated by Diana Bishop. All the characters are so recognisable.

Had me hanging on EVERY second...
Where does No One Left to Tell rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Amongst the best...Karen Rose is a MASTER of suspense. She pulls you into the story so well you're afraid if you turn if off for a second you might miss something.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Paige ~ she's been through so much and not only survivied, but is determined that she's going to carve a new and better path for herself. She's seen her friends find love, and while she's not sure she CAN find it, she wants to at least give herself the chance...and the choice. She's strong enough to uproot herself and move and start over on her own, w/ only her dog by her side.
What does Marguerite Gavin bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
She REALLY does the cliff hangers and red herrings well. When we're not supposed to be guessing who it is we're 'seeing', she nails it. I had NO idea, and I was trying my best to guess, lol. She's different, but perfect for this book.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
You'll be on the edge of your seat the whole show!
    Any additional comments?
I LOVE Karen Rose's books, and can't WAIT for the next one...I hope it's going to be Stevie's book, whom we've gotten to know in the last few books. She and her daughter, Cordelia, have been through alot, and need a happily ever after!
    Kept me intrigued
This was a very good listen, it grabbed my attention from the beginning and had me wondering throughout! Nothing like a good conspiracy!
    Good read!
I enjoy the stories by Karen Rose. Wish I'd read the series in order the first time.
    Love the strong female characters!
    It was OK
I love this genre and I was really looking forward to settling down for a listen after reading the reviews. Let me begin by saying I really wanted to love it. The storyline was solid and the characters were believable. Where they lost me was the vapid, adolescent banter and interaction that absolutely NO intelligent adults in positions of authority would be party to. There were some truly inane conversations and groan worthy exchanges that had me almost cringing with embarrassment for the character. Some of it was so bad I fast forwarded to get through it. I don't mind a bit of double entendre and flirtation, but I have never heard adults have such ridiculous conversations. That having been said.... the story was ok, there were a few surprises and it was worth a credit. The narrator was good, but not on my favorites list.

    Sweet and Southern
    Any additional comments?
More of the Dahlias' escapades in their Alabama town of Darling and absolutely delightful. The narrator is so perfect giving voice to Lizzie and Verna and the girls. I love the southern "flavor" of it all. It makes one wish for a circle of friends like these to share the good times and the hard times. There is a mystery plot, but just as enjoyable is the "getting to know" the ladies. There's something touching to me listening to their stories of the families, their spirit in making do and somehow making it seem wonderful. Perhaps, I'm just one who needs to get away from the reality of today's life once in awhile. lol Listen after the story is over and you'll get the recipes for some of the yummy sounding dishes served in the book as well as homemade household products. How neat! There's mystery, a little heartache, a little romance and lots of fun.
    excellent writing
This is how you write a cozy mystery. Depression era, great well described characters and a small town story. Excellent series.
Susan Wittig Albert's work is great!
Would you listen to The Darling Dahlias and the Naked Ladies again? Why?
yes, I'll probably listen to it again. I'm always interrupted multiple times while listening to a title. Listening again allows me to notice details and nuances which I missed the first time around. And, I really enjoy hearing the best of the dialogue multiple times!
What did you like best about this story?
I'm a gardener and a garden club member; it was interesting to hear about the projects earlier garden clubbers carried out. I can't say our garden club has been involved in saving anyone from crazed criminals!
What about Peggity Prices performance did you like?
She does a decent Southern folks dialect. I'm from the South, so phony accents are pretty grating!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed alot. Many of the characters are a real hoot!
    Any additional comments?
To Susan Wittig Albert: please keep writing!
    GREAT GROUP OF LADIES
I REALLY ENJOY THIS SERIES. I HOPE SUSAN WITTIG ALBERT WRITES MORE; THESE ARE JUST GREAT STORIES DURING THE DEPRESSION AND THE MYSTERIOUS GOINGS ON IN THIS LITTLE TOWN. THESE LADIES CANNOT HELP THEMSELVES, THEY GET INTO MORE TROUBLE BUT COME OUT SMELLING LIKE ROSES.
The Dahlias Just Keep On Blooming
Susan Wittig Albert has a wonderful series going with the Darling Dahlias. Darling, Alabama, could be just about any small town in the U.S., even ones that don't have a local garden club. The Dahlias are easy reads -- or perhaps I should say"listens" in this forum. That doesn't mean, though, that you'll find your mind wandering as you listen.

    Members Reviews:
    A "Diamond" of a book
After reading a very large intense book, I chose Sanctuary as my in between read, thinking it would be easy and light. I was pleasantly surprised to have really enjoyed it. In the beginning I thought it was a little hokey with just too much Jewish background, but I soon came to realize it was all an integral part of the entire plot.
This murder-mystery deals with the diamond industry, and takes the reader from Los Angeles to Israel. When dealing with billions of dollars, theres bound to be thievery, cheating, murder, suspense, throw in a little middle-east politics and you have a recipe for a great story. I have only read one other Faye Kellerman book which was years ago so I cannot compare, but Sanctuary can stand on its own merits. You dont have to read any of the other Peter Decker/Rina series to enjoy this one. There are enough plot twists to engage any reader.
Having been to Israel and understanding many of the places described in the book was an added bonus. The accurate descriptions of the many different kinds of people from black-hat orthodox, to PLO terrorist, to holocaust survivor, to an L.A. police sergeant all well done.
There was an extensive overuse of Hebrew and Yiddish words throughout the book, which may be off-putting to someone not familiar with those languages. I also felt there was just too many wasted words about Peter and Rinas baby Hanna. I assume their side story is the common thread that makes these books a series, but I found it distracting and annoying.
Mitchell Greenberg the narrator was awesome. He pronounced every one of those Hebrew and Yiddish words perfectly, adding authenticity to the story. He changed his accent so many times to suit the characters; everything from Israeli yeshiva boys, to Orthodox old men, to Israeli women and the list goes on. He did a superb job with the inflections of all the characters.
    Best of the series
I'm not a big fan of the more recent Faye Kellerman books, but this older one has everything you loved in her Peter Decker series -- a whopping good mystery, tidbits of the personal life of Peter and Rina, police lore, plus the fact that Faye Kellerman writes the best dinner-table conversations of any author out there. A couple of dinner scenes in this one made me laugh out loud -- its so darn accurate you can hear it coming out of the mouths of your own family.
Something else I found spellbinding -- this book came out in 1995, and without offering a spoiler, suffice it to say that the plot involves a business trip to Israel for both Rina and Peter. In 1995, I was living in California, so back when I read this book, most of the nuances of their time in Israel probably went right past me. Now I've been living in Israel for ten years, and found Kellerman's storytelling absolutely fascinating.

The trail grew cold and the book was unofficially closed on a serial killer who stopped killing. But now "The Icepick Prowler" has confessed - but only to seven of the killings. Not only does he deny the eighth, he has an airtight alibi. Barbara Ettinger's family had almost come to accept that the young woman was the victim of a random killing. Now they must grapple with the shocking revelation that not only was her death disguised to look like the serial killer's work, but her murderer may have been someone she knew and trusted. Matthew Scudder has been hired to finally bring her slayer to justice, setting the relentless detective on the trail of a death almost a decade old, searching for a vicious murderer who's either long gone, long dead... or patiently waiting to kill again.
    Members Reviews:
    Letdown
Compared to the first three Scudder books this one is a letdown. Plus the narrator is a step back from Alan Sklar who did the first three.
Scudder's alcoholism is becoming an issue
If you could sum up A Stab in the Dark in three words, what would they be?
    Scudder is unraveling.
Would you listen to another book narrated by William Roberts?
While not an awful narrator, I actually preferred the previous narrator in the series. This one had a taste for the cliche when picking his voices. Even Scudder's inner voice had a little New York cab driver in it.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This one made me feel the depressive pull of falling in the bottle. It did a very good job of capturing the state of denial alcoholics find themselves in. Scudder keeps finding new ways to explain his drunken actions.
    Any additional comments?
If you want to know when the writing takes a notch up, this would be it. Scudder has become a fully complex character. You may even grow to dislike him at points during this one. That is not a bad thing. A truly heroic character needs flaws front, center, and hidden.
    A good reading !
This is one of the early Matt Scudder's stories. You can tell that Lawrence Block is still working on Matt's character , but the story runs smooth with a terrific description of the New York "ambiance" . Definitively a good reading !
    Unfolding
One thing that I think Lawrence Block does very well is that his plot seems to "unfold". His stories don't very often surprise with things that you are shocked with - rather they evolve with a logic that makes sense when you reflect back on them. Scudder never seems lost or in over his head - rather he is analytical and dogged. Also prefer the length of these to the 15 hour plus convoluted epics
    Another good Scudder story
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
THe plot moved along well... and yes, there were times when we "sat in the garage to hear more". There was definitely one time that totally surprised us while listening...

New York is sweltering in the summer heat, and Harlem is close to the boiling point. To Coffin Ed Johnson and Grave Digger Jones, at times it seems as if the whole world has gone mad. Trying, as always, to keep some kind of peace - their legendary nickel-plated Colts very much in evidence - Coffin Ed and Grave Digger find themselves pursuing two completely different cases through a maze of knifings, beatings, and riots that threatens to tear Harlem apart.
    Members Reviews:
    best narrator ever
First off, there could not be a better narrator for these Chester Himes books. Dion Graham brings them to life more than if you were reading the book yourself. This was my very first introduction to Himes, and I am glad I started here although someone who likes a traditional story might dislike this one. This book is very wild and disjointed. Many of the chapters do not fit with each other to make a coherent picture. I've laughed out loud while reading this book, but also its sad in many ways. I was reading this book simultaneously while reading a book about soldiers in WWII. So, I had this book which is about all the hustlers and dregs of society and all of America's racism boiling over, then the other book about what heroes in this country look and act like. You should not read this book if you want to feel good about the country. If you want to see seething black rage towards whites, rampant prostitution, and violence... then this is good. With that said, I think one could miss the theme of this book. It's overall message. Without top notch writing and narration, it would have been worthless trash.
    FINALLY....a relic uncovered
I'm almost finished with my first listen to Chester Himes' Coffin Ed/Gravedigger books. Chester Himes was one of the predecessors to many detective novelists today (along with those before him, i.e. Chandler, Hammett, etc) who was largely ignored by the media due to his color. Only now, due to the resurgence of awareness AND admiration for minority writers (Walter Mosley, Junot Diaz, etc.) and the acceptance of minority voices in all forms of literature, are Himes' mysteries being reprinted and now voiced by Dion Graham. The stories themselves can appear as campy pulp fiction, but Himes' writing, and Graham's voice overshadow any cartoonish happenings with Ed & Gravedigger. It's really good to see that Audible & the publishing industry are opening doors and making one of the forgotten writers on the 20th century available to all of us.
    Love it!!
I love the crime, violence and drama all in one book. It's excitement to my ears. You never know what's next, that's what I love about it.
Even a blind man couldn't follow this book
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The writer kept jumping all over the place. It was very hard to follow.
What could Chester Himes have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Too many interludes and not enough follow through. I listened to this book twice. I'm not sure why there were so many random events with no real connection to the end story. It was like listening to a person who is trying to tell me a story but has difficulty staying on topic and finishing a complete thought. Mr Himes, please make sure you bring the story full circle.

    It's Not a Popularity Contest
It's not fun being the guy who investigates bad cops. But Malcolm Fox has a job to do, and he isn't going to be put off by being stuck in a small closet for his interviews, or the time wasting delays put in his path. I like Fox. He keeps his focus is clear and uncomplicated. And I loved the narrator. Peter Forbes' many accents subtly change for each character. Just a pleasure to listen to, and definitely enhances the story.
Pretty good mystery by a great author
Not as compelling as the Rebus stories, but nonetheless interesting and well written. Good vocal performance as always by Peter Forbes.

What three words best describe Luke Danielss performance?
    Not. Dick. Hill.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Shot of Tequila?
Some of the more gruesome scenes, especially ones involving a particular female character.
    Any additional comments?
Average J.A. Konrath - gore, violence, dark humor.
    Dick Hill needed
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Why do publishers/ authors feel the need to change what does not need to be changedthis is the worst book in this series . I have all the audios in this series and this is last one I listen to with this reader.
Has Shot of Tequila turned you off from other books in this genre?
    Only this series.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Luke Daniels?
Dick Hill for the male voices Susie Breck for the female like in the earlier books.
    Not up to standard
This story is more about "Tequila" than it is about Jack Daniels. I missed her banter in this one.
Wow, what a difference the reader makes!!!
I have every one of the series. The great job that Dick and his wife did in this seres, makes the books. I'm sure Like is a good narrator, but it just wasn't the same without the great personalities dick and his wife gave to the characters! Not worth the money, Sorry!
    Just plain awful.
Would you try another book from J. A. Konrath and/or Luke Daniels?
I have read all of the Jack Daniels books and loved them, except for this one. It just didn't seem to belong to the series.
What was most disappointing about J. A. Konraths story?
Where was the humor? The "exciting" scenes were too long and dragged out.
    Which scene was your favorite?
    There wasn't one.
Was Shot of Tequila worth the listening time?
    No.
    Any additional comments?
The rest of the series is great, fast-paced and funny. Just don't waste your time or money on this one.
