    A hit. And a miss.
Quarry doesn't kill just anybody these days. He restricts himself to targeting other hitmen, availing his marked-for-death clients of two services: eliminating the killers sent after them, and finding out who hired themand then removing that problem, as well.
So far he's rid of the world of nobody who would be missed. But this time he finds himself zeroing in on the grieving family of a missing cheerleader. Does the hitman's hitman have the wrong quarry in his sights?

    The great Max Allan Collins
    Any additional comments?
This is a good start to the Quarry series. However it is far from being the best book. And honestly I would recommend new readers start elsewhere. Max Allan Collins broke new ground with this novel in the 70s by making a bad guy, a hit man, the protagonist of a novel. These days that sounds old hat. Back then it was a risk. One that I am grateful Collins had the nuts to take. (Really it could have harmed his fledgling career, such as it was.)
The problem is that in hindsight, with subsequent Collins and Quarry novels, this one is sorta Mickey Mouse, haha. There isnt even the Year One type of story youd expect from the first in a series (check out the First Quarry for that, as well as an all around better novel).
For my money, Quarry doesnt really become the Quarry we love until Collins revisited the character in the 1980s with the Last Quarry. Thats the one I REALLY started digging the character.
And also....thats the novel where Stefan Rudnicki takes over for Christopher Kipiniak. Kipiniak is simply nowhere near the voice actor Rudinicki is (judging by their work on Quarry). Kipiniak has the tough guy voice, sure, but none of the wiley music, charm, arrogance and cleverness that Rudinicki conveys.
If Skyboat media (or whoever does the recording) is smart, theyll ditch all the previous recordings not done by Stefan Rudinicki and do them again. Rudinicki is for me as much part of Quarry as Max Allan Collins. Well, maybe thats exaggerating since Collins writes Quarry, ha. But you get my meaning.
    Glad I found this series
It's the second Quarry book I listen to, the first having been the prequel to the séries. I'm surprised I'd never heard of this author before, he does know how to write a crime novel, thanks Audible for bringing this to life. If you like the Keller series from Lawrence Block, Butcher's Boy from Perry or Victor The Assassin from Wood you'll definitely like this one too.
    Collins should be better known
I found the Quarry series by accident, and wow, I'm glad I did. Although Collins wrote them in the '70s, they are far less dated than many more famous from that time. Despite the sexist pulp covers on each one, sexism is not a problem here, at least for me.
Quarry resembles Richard Stark's (Donald Westlake's) Parker, but I think the writing is better and the character more likable, at least for a hit man. Well done. Perfect narrator.
The only problem is, each book is pretty short. Even so, I think each one is worth a credit. I plan to listen to them all at least twice.
    Very Entertaining
This book is great. its hard to stop listening to be warned there is some language but the stiry great with lots of twists and turns.
    Horrible narrator.
The narrator makes this almost impossible to listen.

    Publisher's Summary:
In the night-still canyons of the Arizona desert, a girl is on the run. Alone but for her beloved red-tailed hawk, she flees from the dark shadows of her young life, the horror she has witnessedand the terror that now stalks her.
New York Times best-selling author J. A. Jance returns with her eighth novel in the highly acclaimed Joanna Brady mystery series. Set against the backdrop of the modern west, this gripping tale finds Sheriff Brady juggling a precarious overload in both her personal and professional lives. About to be married, Joanna's facing a daughter turning 12 and going on 20, a meddlesome mother micro-managing her wedding, and new in-laws arriving any day. The sudden death of her much-loved neighbor and handyman, Clayton Rhodes, creates further turmoil, leaving Joanna shocked, saddened, and the target of Clayton's irate and irrational daughter, who accuses the Sheriff's Department of covering up a possible murder.
But amidst the uproar, the report of a homicide at Cochise Stronghold in the Dragoon Mountains quickly captures Joanna's full attention. An Indian woman has been found shot to death - a woman recently released from prision after serving time for the manslaughter killing of her husband. She is the mother of a missing 15-year-old, Lucy Ridder.
The death at first appears to be a case of domestic rage finally exploding - and a troubled teen runaway may be a victim, or a cold-blooded killer. Yet as Joanna deals with the long-standing troubles of Clayton Rhodes' family and digs deeper into the mysterious life of Lucy and her family, she discovers that investigating family hostilities is leading her down a twisted trail of hatred, greed, and far-reaching consequences - and into a dangerous world where violence is the first response and long buried secrets are a reason to killor die.
Once again, J. A. Jance delivers a gritty, deftly written thriller that unfolds on a vivid landscape of raw beauty and unrelenting danger. And, as always, Sheriff Joanna Brady brings the setting to life with the sensitivity, spirit, and intense passion for justice that makes Jance novels ring with authenticity.

Good book. Mispronounced "Ft Huachucha" nags a bit
If you like the Joanna Brady series, this book is pretty satisfying. It has all the family stresses combined with Joanna's struggles with being female and running the department. One of the reasons I like this series so much, is it is set in Southern Arizona where I live. So the places mentioned and used in the story are familiar -- I've been to most of them. That's why C.J. Critt's mispronouncing "Ft Hauchucha" as "Fort Wah-HACK-A" instead of "Fort Wah-CHOO-Ka" throughout the book bothered me so much. I tried really hard not to wince everytime she said it, but couldn't shake it...
Required Optional Heading Great book as always.
One thing in all J. B is pastys It's PAST- -ees. (in Upper Michigan's anyway)

Decent story and characters but the narrator had some weird inflections and affectations that were annoying
    Devil's Claw Review
Excellent story with a number of wrist and turned. Enjoyed the Right Red the hawk.
    Very relatable.
I loved the characters in this book and how the characters seemed so real. It gives a good message too.

It's really interesting to hear how the characters develop -growing tensions and shifting alliances. Good character writing is the root of great fiction and this drama has got it right as the story seems to grow around the personalities in a natural way.

    Sometimes Less is More
Where does Let Me Go rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I would rate this book a 7. When I compare it to Unbroken, Help, The Lone Survivor, it's trivial. However she's a new writer and I give her a 7 for the intricate piecing together of this story.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Archie as he was the only person I could trust.
What didnt you like about Christina Delaines performance?
    Her voice
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    No
    Any additional comments?
Chelsea needs to learn that less is more. And when she defines her character, she shouldn't deviate from the plan. Correct me if I'm wrong, but why would Archie have sex with Gretchen in the middle of trying to find Susan.
I didn't feel Chelsea knew how to end a love scene. She would drone on and on and on. Finding Susan was another chapter that could've been edited better.
    Unhooked
What would have made Let Me Go better?
Nothing short of a whole new rewrite
What do you think your next listen will be?
    don't know
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Christina Delaine?
    Carolyn McCormack
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Not that I could see. in fact it went pretty much down hill for me.
    Any additional comments?
I was not particularly impressed with this book at all. The narrator voice of Archie was way too low & I had to strain to hear it. I am sorry but the story was all chewed up & spit out like it was piece meal. And I could not wrap the concept around my brain that the psychopathic murderer (Gretchen) kept escaping & this time came back to portray (still a murderer) but in a way a kind of hero too. Now that is way over the top!
The character of Archie was way off too as the writer revealed he had a hot & heavy affair with Gretchen in the past. Palease! And she also was indicating he was obsessed, & possibly hopelessly in love with Gretchen who had actually tortured him, killed him & brought him back to life.

Kind of Cruel may edge out my favorite, Hurting Distance - my introduction to the Z-W series.
I especially appreciate the British perspective, on universal experiences ;)
    Loved it!
This is by far the best in the series. Aside from the wonderful, intricate plot, the book sheds more light on the unusual and bizarre relationship between the series' core characters, Simon and Charlie. I loved the narrator/therapist twist because we learn a lot from her as she carries the story forward. The plot unfolds with just the right speed and keeps you on the edge of your seat during this seamless, brilliant read. It's amazing the amount of creativity that comes from the author -- she is a genius storyteller. Can't wait for the next one.
    Good, but not her best
Good plot, but a little far-fetched
    Four Stars
    jolly good read
    Quirky and smart fiction.
Loved the complicated characters in this story and the deeply complicated family relationships that make this story so compelling. How deeply we are effected by our childhood and how important it is to recognise and deal with our issues is highlighted in this story. It is also very life affirming. A great read- amusing, horrifying- all the stuff of a great suspenseful thriller.

    Cozy paranormal
In this book Stacy gets to go to Ireland to find the cauldron of plenty. The last time it had gone missing it caused the great famine. These books are nice little paranormal mysteries with plenty of magic, action and humor. I love Stacy's little quips and all the funny situations she finds herself in. Looking forward to the next one. At the end you even get a few recipes.
    More fun!
This is what I would classify as a 'cozy' paranormal. I have really grown to love the characters and all of their quirks. Stacy is a great MC, I love her humor and take on things. And I think Amy Rubinate was the PERFECT voice for Stacy.
Start at the beginning with Opal Fire. These are light, fun and entertaining reads. I will absolutely read more.
    Emerald Isle Glistens with Entertainment
Would you consider the audio edition of Emerald Isle to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Emerald Isle?
Stacy gets to travel in this story.
What about Amy Rubinates performance did you like?
Amy did a great job of delivering the text.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book was laced with humor. A lighthearted mystery if those exist in this realm.
    Any additional comments?
    Enjoyed every line.
    Stacy Justice Keeps getting better
Where does Emerald Isle rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I have enjoyed all these books. I really look forward to the next one. I think the fact we are learning more about the history of the family is also been nice. I can't wait to see what the new adventure will be.
So annoyed with the author, editor
I have read close to 1000 book. I have a library of 500. This is the first time I have ever been annoyed with the writer and the first time that I thought, "...wow, the editor needs to be fired". The plot is excellent with the character development. 3.5 Books mostly written in first person (Stacy). Halfway through this book she becomes "that girl "and based on the context the person calling her "the girl" is her grandmother. Or perhaps someone else but it's poorly written so who know. As dissatisfied as I have been with the writing this latest flaw distracts the narrative

    Editorial Reviews:
A cats cradle of puzzles and surprises, begun with the murder of a man in a car he didnt own, unravels in slow and entertaining fashion in the fourth cozy in best-selling author Leanne Sweeneys Cats in Trouble Mystery series.
Vanessa Johansson brings the right degree of spunk and fortitude to the character of Jillian Hart, who would much prefer to be left to her quilts, crafts, and cats: Merlot, Syrah, and Chablis. However, thanks this time to a boyfriends past, she is once again proven unable to "learn to stay out of the murder business", as one accusing Mercy, S.C., neighbor puts it.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
I downloaded this to listen to while cleaning. It's was easy to follow & turned out to be my favorite of the series so far. I liked getting to know some additional characters while not 'leaving town' to do it. This book gives us some insight into Tom which, up to now, had been lacking.

    Yes
Another great book by Leann Sweeney

    Fortune teller feud in Aruba!
This novella is my first book by Marcia Clark. I was not expecting much so I am surprised by this cute little detective story. Narration is excellent.
    Great read
You need to see Marcia on the Stephanie Miller Show. Love all of Marcia books. More books More, books please. Also love January's voice.
Same characters, but not much story.
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yeah, it was pleasant. Not very captivating though.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The most interesting aspect is the same characters that I love. The least interesting is the plot. This is one of those novellas, that take only a couple of hours (if that). There just isn't much story development.
Have you listened to any of January LaVoys other performances before? How does this one compare?
She's terrific. Does a good job differentiating the voices.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    No
    Any additional comments?
Love Clark's writing. Just not enough of it here.
    "To Knowing Your Limits"
Would you listen to Trouble in Paradise again? Why?
This is a short story as a preview and to keep you up to date with the series. Clever of Ms Clark to keep you enticed for new book Killer Ambition, 15 min sample, or in my case encourage me to buy all the books in the series.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
This short story shows off how well the author can write. It's not the best of subjects, but you can see how the author leads you to the next adventure.
What does January LaVoy bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I am a new fan of Ms LaVoy, maybe 10 reads, and none disappoint. Her full range of voice characters are great. Her male voice for hero's is becoming yummy. She portrays both Rachel and Bailey very well and makes this series.
    Any additional comments?
Note: I use new 1.25x speed to get author intent.
    Outstanding storyline and characters
Where does Trouble in Paradise rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It has to be in my top five of audiobooks that I have listened to.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Well obviously it was Rachael Knight. Her character is tough but also very mysterious as well.
What about January LaVoys performance did you like?
She has a great voice and she can do multiple voice overs of various characters amazingly.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Just the whole book caught my attention.

Gil Cunningham must trace the dead woman and find her enemies, track down the thieves and murderers and identify the watchers in the shadows, particularly the elusive fourth person who holds the secret of what happened that night. Questioning cathedral staff and apprentice boys, pilgrims and tradesmen, he uncovers only more puzzles. And then there is another death. How is it connected to the first? While his wife, Alys, deals with the tensions within their family, Gil has to untangle the threads of the mystery to find the solution to all the crimes.
