Seems like a repeat of book One!
To be fair I liked this book, I just felt it was a repeat of the first in the series. So a=many of the same elements that happened in the first book. Really, your boyfriend and BFF are both acting out of character, and you didn't think it was a spell right off?
I like Larue, most of the time. She just has this whole mopey thing that gets tired. For somebody who has the ability to see ghosts her whole life, she doesn't know very much about out them. She has some great moments, but it is hard to get past the immature dialogue and her flighty actions.
My liking of the first book is what kept me reading long after I was bored to tears. I might go on to the next book in the series, but if it is rehashing the same plot, I will be done with this ghoul!
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Elizabeth Klett, who does a fantastic job. She has a great tone that transcends the youthful dialogue. Had she not kept the maturity in her read, this could have been a very different review. Her pace is terrific, just swift enough to keep the story moving when it lagged. Her voices were great, she didn't try to butch it up for the men but she did give them a masculine touch. I will definitely be looking for more of her reads!
Overall, I have wanted to love these reads but end up underwhelmed. They have such fun covers and engaging blurbs.
Disclosure I received this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts opinions and ratings are my own.
*** If you found this review at all helpful, please take a moment to let me know. I love reading and sharing my opinions with other readers. I listen at double speed, all my impressions of the narration are from that setting. Thanks for taking the time to read my review! Any additional comments?
Ghouls Night Out was just as funny as Me and My Ghoulfriends. Larue's ghostly friends are a delight and there is something about this audobook that made this hard to put down...you can't go wrong with a Rose Pressey books, very entertaining.
    Elizabeth Klett does it again!
Would you listen to Ghouls Night Out again? Why?
This is definitely a book I'd listen to again and again. Ms.

'I don't much like working for clients. It means that I have to follow someone else's instructions, and I've never been too good at that. When those instructions came from a spirit guide at a seance, I just had to laugh. Well, you would, wouldn't you? The rather attractive young woman whose husband the spook had said I should help her to find took me on a quest that turned into a trail of lucrative antiques deals, spoiled only when the police came plodding in, and I found myself up to my neck in forgeries and murders. Situation normal, really. Then the killer turned his attentions to me, just as the spirit had said he would, and I certainly wasn't laughing any more.'

Some books shouldn't be on audio.
I love the Lovejoy character, but unless you're doing absolutely nothing else while listening this will be difficult to follow. There's a thousand characters. Even relatively undistracted while driving I could barely follow.

Of course, Lia's dog park friends refuse to be left out in this romp of a mystery laced with humor, dogs, and love.

Would you consider the audio edition of Maximum Security to be better than the print version?
Not necessarily..... depends on the circumstances. I love to read. But it is also convenient to "multi-task"... listen to the story while doing something else.
What other book might you compare Maximum Security to and why?
I love a good mystery, so can't really pick one to compare. As far as audio books, we have listened to Daniel Silva books while traveling. The "reader" of his books is really, really good.
Have you listened to any of Jane Boyers other performances before? How does this one compare?
No have not heard Jane Boyer before. She does a good job with Maximum Security but I would not say she is as good as the Daniel Silva book reader.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Tracking down "Daisy" and the children's comments, and the living arrangements.
    Any additional comments?
I love the Dog Park, Lia Anderson series, with the continuing characters. The plots are always well thought out, and I always think I figured out "who dunnit" and I'm always wrong. Love the surprises!!
    Another fun dog park mystery
Lia Anderson is back, and her current foster dog, Max, is a canine Houdini, a genius at finding gaps in the dog park fence. And one fine day in October, Max returns from her solo exploration of the adjoining woods carrying a human femur.
    And it's not very old.
Max is easily able to lead Lia and Jim back to the body, or rather, the bones, almost entirely stripped of its flesh. And once the bones are identified as George Munze (spelling is a guess; I listened to the audiobook), Lia is looking for his missing dog, Daisy, while her boyfriend, Cincinnati homicide detective Peter Dourson, is looking for a killer.
But of course Lia befriends the perfectly nice woman, Kate Anstad, who was George's high school sweetheart, recently returned to his life, who is an obvious suspect. Her best patron, Renee, takes Kate in when the police ask her not to leave town. A mix of compassion and suspicion leads the dog park friends to organize deliveries of meals to the Munze household--where George's wife, Monica. is also an obvious suspect; whose daughter Stacy his cracked a secret about George's private life; who also has a teenage neighbor with an obvious crush on Monica hanging around and doing outside chores.
And of course, Daisy's disappearance isn't unrelated to George's death.
Meanwhile, Lia and Peter are wrestling with their relationship and their own insecurities.

    JAKE = SWOON
Jake is amazing and perfect. just like all the other books in this series it starts with a bang. this story had a little less suspense than the other ones but was still 5 stars. I didn't think I would anticipate Rafes story but I am; although probably because of Kirra
    cheesey
rather cheesy and too many sexual innuendos
all of the books in the series are too much alike and unrealistic.
    pretty good...but not amazing
The story is ok. It is the fourth book in the series and it is nice to keep contact with the characters and family but these books are not brilliant. I am a big Dee Henderson fan and was looking for some books to fill my library while Ms. Henderson continues to write. There just isn't a lot of substance to these stories. They are interesting but I always wish there was more.
    Evil on the Loose
Good and fast moving from the first . God is always in charge. He does not promise his people freedom from pain and trouble, but he does promise He will be with His People.
    Love the Alaskan theme, but
The books seem to follow a similar romantic pattern. we can all ready tell who the next couple will be in book 5.

    Loved this story!
I loved the way this story twisted and turned - I was totally taken by surprise! Will definitely buy the next in the series!
    great!
heard about this on npr and after hearing the premise I knew I would love it. the storytelling was great and my husband and I both got so wrapped up in the story we couldn't stop listening.
    Learned something new
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I like books that combine a good story and learning about culture. The story was good and it made me think
Who was your favorite character and why?
    The main character -
    YA book in disguise
Full disclosure, I quit listening about a third of the way into the book. I wanted to hear the story, to get caught up in the suspense, to understand a culture I am unfamiliar with. For me, the book reads like a YA novel to which someone added sex, booze and a generous dose of the f-word. The protagonist comes across as shallow and immature and the other characters were one dimensional. It didn't feel authentic to New York and I was curious if it was because Rebekah was new to the city, but I didn't read far enough to find out.
Obviously, you should read other reviews. But if this book was recommended to you because you have enjoyed other thrillers or mysteries or if you were lured in by the Gillian Flynn quote on the front, this might not be what you are looking for.
I am more thankful than ever that Audible has a great return policy.
    Good Story
i enjoined this story. Look forward to reading or listening to the next in the series.

    Publisher's Summary:
The sun, smoking behind a haze of cloud, threw off a light of burnished pewter. Mysteriously lit, it was as if the watery, colorless land refused drabness, stood determinedly against dimishment. This is a landscape that can easily deceive, a landscape that volunteers nothing, as if to say, Youre on your own, mate - much like the habitués of the only pub for miles around called The Case Has Altered.
The Lincolnshire fenlands are the right setting for Richard Jurys latest case, a mystifying double murder. The body of one woman is found on the wash; another woman lies floating in a canal in Windy Fen. Both women are connected with Fengate: Dorcas Reese, a servant; Verna Dunn, the louche ex-wife of the owner, Max Owen, a man with a passion for antiques. So when the principal suspect turns out to be Jenny Kennington, a woman Jury has long loved, he decides he needs someone inside Fengate, someone who can impersonate an antiques expert.

    classic martha grimes
not the most exciting of her books, so it tends to be a little long. But you get a closer look at Jury and Melrose, and of course Aunt Agatha!
    Wonderful Narrator!
Light, interesting, entertaining. This series introduced me to Steve West, who is among my favorite narrators--up there with Robin Sachs, Robert Glenister, Gerard Doyle, Guildart Jackson, Julian Rhind-Tutt and George Guidell.
Very good book, but a bit shallow
The best part of this book is Marshall Trueblood acting as a defense council in a trial brought by Aunt Agatha. As always Merlrose Plant is a delight and the scenes he is in are very good and interesting.
I am however growing weary of Richard Jury and his long list of women, all of whom have secrets, are unattainable, and generally make him look a fool.
The mystery is pretty good, but I actually was disappointed at the culprit.
    Good girl Martha .
I love Martha Grimes. I never just pick her writing apart. May she live forever.
The plot is great but take a bit long to wrap up
I am still a fan but the plots are getting a bit too fancy and complex.
Also, at some point Jury and/ or Plant have to fall in love and get married.???? Right??

    Publisher's Summary:
Jane Lawless is a woman at a crossroads - her lover has left, she has finally recovered from a vicious attack sustained last year, and the holidays are closing in. With no one to help her ring in the new year, Jane reluctantly agrees to accompany her good friend Cordelia Thorn on a peculiar holiday trip: Cordelia's estranged sister, Broadway star Octavia Thorn, has asked them to attend her wedding.
Octavia getting married is no surprise - she's done it three times before - but her candidate for hubby #4 certainly is. Roland Lester is a reclusive 83-year-old retired Hollywood director, a relic from the golden age of Tinseltown with a controversial past. No one can understand how the two met, much less fell in love. When the bodies start to drop, Jane realizes it might not be love at all that brought the young diva and the aged director together, but something much deeper, and perhaps more sinister.
Delving deep into film history, Jane finds unsettling connections between Roland and a murder that was never solved. Finding out what happened 40 years ago could be the key to unlock the mystery of Octavia's curious marriage, but laying bare such long-buried secrets also promises grave consequences for everyone involved.
    Members Reviews:
    Captivating
I really enjoyed this book. It's always a treat to catch up with Jane and Cordelia. Looking forward to starting the next one.
A Wonderful and Intricately Plotted Mystery
This is Minneapolis restaurateur Jane Lawless's tenth mystery outing, and the novels keep getting increasingly complex, not to mention more intricately plotted. Jane is still recovering from injuries suffered the previous fall when she was nearly killed, and in this book, she is more vulnerable than she has ever been in any of the previous books. She and her best buddy, Cordelia, travel to upstate Connecticut to an old mansion, Innishannon, to attend the wedding of Cordelia's estranged sister, Octavia, a stage actress who caught the attention of the living legend, Roland Lester. He's an 82-year-old movie director, a millionaire, and a man with multiple secrets including one that goes all the way back to 1957 when his best friend and purported lover, Lew Wallace, was shot in a murder that was never solved. Is this the kind of man Octavia should be marrying? Can Cordelia and Octavia put aside eight years worth of differences and reconcile? And what about the zany cast of characters rattling around at Innishannon? Roland's brother, a grand-niece, Lew Wallace's son, the housekeeper, and a documentary filmmaker on site all have their own secrets to hide, too. Soon enough, there are more killings, and it is unclear whether they are connected to the past murders or not.
I loved the references to the movies. Hart has taken the time to flesh out a mix of made up characters with the real-life stories about Hollywood legends such as Loretta Young, John Wayne, Clark Gable, George Cukor, and many more. Along with that, Cordelia's humor-and even Jane's occasional wry sense of humor-was entertaining.

    Release date: 03-11-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 240 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Edgar Award-winner Bruce DeSilva returns with Liam Mulligan, an old-school investigative reporter for a dying newspaper in Providence, Rhode Island. Mulligan knows every street and alley, every priest and prostitute, every cop and street thug. He knows the mobsters and politicians - who are pretty much one and the same. Inspired by a true story, Providence Rag finds Mulligan, his pal Mason, and the newspaper they both work for at an ethical crossroad. The youngest serial killer in history butchered five of his neighbors before he was old enough to drive. When he was caught eighteen years ago, Rhode Island's antiquated criminal statutes - never intended for someone like him - required that all juveniles, no matter their crimes, be released at age 21. The killer is still behind bars, serving time for crimes supposedly committed on the inside. That these charges were fabricated is an open secret; but nearly everyone is fine with it - if the monster ever gets out more people will surely die. But Mason is not fine with it. If officials can get away with framing this killer they could do it to anybody. As Mason sets out to prove officials are perverting the justice system, Mulligan searches frantically for some legal way to keep the monster behind bars. The dueling investigations pit the friends against each other in a high-stakes race against time - and snares them in an ethical dilemma that has no right answer. Providence Rag is a gripping novel of suspense by one of the rising talents in the mystery field.

Awesome book, a who done it until the end
Where does Providence Rag rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Providence Rag rocked, it ranks right up there in my top 10. Book 3 of the Mulligan series did not disappoint, you do not need to read the first 2 to enjoy this book, it makes reference to the previous books but it is a novel all on its own.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plot kept me guess until the very end, once I thought I had the book figured out I was wrong, it kept me guessing until the very end.
Have you listened to any of Jeff Woodmans other performances before? How does this one compare?
Jeff Woodman does and excellent job, his New England accent is right on, Mulligan and the other main characters all had their own voice, I could tell a different person was speaking each time, some just read the book, Jeff did a wicked good job.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The book is based off a real life case from Rhode Island from some years ago, I was interested in this case so I did the natural thing... I Googled it, that made me aware of the case and I was not aware that this happened right here in my back yard.
    Any additional comments?
Bruce DeSilva is from Rhode Island or he worked here because what I enjoyed was the land marks are correct, from a gas station on Post Rd. in Warwick to some of the neighborhoods, Newport and Narragansett, as Jeff is reading there have been times I will be passing the exact same spot as in the book. An excellent listen.
    Yuck
I had looked forward to getting to know the characters in this story, because they were mentioned by other reviewers as being interesting. And, as a former reporter, I looked forward to reading about the old newspaper world I knew back in the day.
