    Makes me miss Palestine...
Any good story is about characters set in a location. Good Science Fiction is the same as good historical fiction or good fantasy. The story is important, the setting is simply a place where the story occurs. In very good fiction, the setting is as alive as the characters, but does not dominate the characters. This is the case with Omar Yusuf. The story is about an old, somewhat broken man, who still feels that justice matters. The setting is good enough to almost hear the adhan drift through your window, but it is not the focus of the story. Omar Yusuf is. The setting is good enough to feel the land around you, but it is the story that drives the book. I am through books 1 and 2, both are good. I will update on 3 and 4.
    off-beat atmospheric mystery
This is not a formulaic blockbuster but a well-written and characterized STORY that situates the listener in a miasma of cross plots in one of the globe???s most victimized and misunderstood hotspots.
The "hero" is a doggedly determined human with no superhuman strengths, just great compassion after a mostly failed life - and as described, is a worn-down, middle-aged history teacher whose actions and decisons don't affect big picture history, but do offer small scale hope.
If you want a change from larger-than-life spies winning a "war on terror" and are tired of wise cracking, cliche spitting cops, you might want to try this.

    Disappointed to say the least
What would have made Unhallowed Ground better?
Story presented three mysteries at core. Left us hanging for the answer with no explanation for one. Solving or explaining third mystery.
Has Unhallowed Ground turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. I have read many of her books.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Big disappointment and confusion.
    Narrator was annoying.
The story was pretty good but I couldn't really enjoy it because of the narrator.
    Terrible
Would you try another book from Heather Graham and/or Emily Durante?
    Maybe
What could Heather Graham have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Write dialog for an adult book and not for preteen literature. The characters were supposed to be college educated professionals, not 12 year old's on an adventure.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator was awful. She made all the female characters sound like airheads that were about 12 years old. All the guys sounded like stupid jocks who were still in junior high school. She should have been narrating a cartoon adventure.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment. I actually couldn't finish the book because of the narration.
    Narrator Hard to Listen To
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Not really. Still listening to it and the reader is not that good. All the girls sound like airheads and the guys' voices are horrible.
If youve listened to books by Heather Graham before, how does this one compare?
It doesn't. So far, the story line isn't thrilling me either.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I have to listen in small doses. Her voices for females makes them sound like airheads and the guys sound like your typical stupid jock.
Once you've heard Luke Daniels, no one else compares.
Was Unhallowed Ground worth the listening time?
    Still thinking about it.
If you like to listen to books this one is great
This is great. I love Heather Graham. I just wished there were more by her

    Publisher's Summary:
Hoping to find solace from the demons that haunt her, Vail makes her first trip to the Napa Valley. But shortly after arriving, a victim is found in the deepest reaches of an exclusive wine cave, the work of an extraordinarily unpredictable serial killer. From the outset, Vail is frustrated by her inability to profile the offender - until she realizes why: the Behavioral Analysis Unit has not previously encountered a killer like him.
As Vail and the task force work around the clock to identify and locate him, they're caught in a web knotted with secretive organizations, a decades-long feud between prominent wine families, and widespread corruption that leads Vail to wonder whom, if anyone, she can trust. Meanwhile, as the victim count rises, Vail can't shake the gnawing sense that something isn't right.
With the killer's actions threatening the Napa Valley's multi-billion dollar industry, the stakes have never been greater, and the race to find the killer never more urgent.
And through it all, a surprise lurks...one that Karen Vail never sees coming.
Meticulously researched during years of work with the FBI profiling unit and extensive interviews with wine industry professionals, best-selling author Alan Jacobson delivers a high-velocity thriller featuring the kind of edge-of-your-seat ending that inspired Nelson DeMille to call him "a hell of a writer".

    loved it
where are the rest of the series?? I'm dying for the follow up. Karen Vale is a great character with a bad temper and an inability to step away from the job.
Looking forward to the next one
I liked the 7th Victim enough to give this one & try...and now I am regretting being out of credits so I can't get the third book right away. Yes, the main character is flawed, but aren't we all? I find her to be more enjoyable by not being perfect.
I agree the narrator can be a little flat at times but still the storyline is good.
I found this to be a good listen overall & eagerly await getting the next one.
    This is the FBI's Best?
This is the first Karen Vail novel that I've listened to -- and it's going to be my last. The story is OK (not great) and I'm enjoying it only because I lived for a number of years in the Napa Valley. The reader, too, is OK. But Karen Vail! -- how did the FBI ever hire such an irrational, dysfunctional, dim-bulb? The woman's a disaster with barely enough sense to use a Blackberry -- she certainly shouldn't be trusted with firearms. And a note to the reader -- it's St. HelEEna not Helen-ah.
    crush review
the story too a while to get me interested. Alot of details that could have been edited out, but once the story came together I wanted to continue and couldn't stop until I found out the whole story.
I had stopped listening for some reason
I don't recall the Why, but it was 07Dec, so when I went back... it was hard to pickup. I guess I wasn't a fan of what the killer did. Maybe of the victims had been male, it would have made a difference?? unknown.

    Critic Reviews:
"A thriller all the way." (Seattle Times)
    Members Reviews:
    good
This was a good Spencer book, but not one of the best, in my opinion. I could not get too attached to the politician and his wife. The politician is supposed to be madly in love with her (gallant and sacrificial love), but from what we know about her and her personality, it is not too believable that he could be so madly in love with her. For some reason I found this book a little flat so I could not give it a "5". It may be that I like Joe Montegna's reading skills better than Michael Prichard's. Prichard is good, but Montegna is better.
    Spenser; Politics?
This is a foreshadowing of the next two Spenser novels Valediction and A Catskill Eagle. The politician Meade Alexander will soon be Spenser and Susan will be Ronny; the drunk slutty woman who likes "granny sex" though as far s we know Susan does limit her mistake to one man. As with Spenser; Meade's loyalty to his lady knows no bounds; he'll go to any lengths and compromise any or all of his values to protect her. Though in my less than humble opinion, it's difficult to understand why in either case. Susan is already stretching the boundaries of Spenser's tolerance and it isn't hard to discern that this doesn't bode well for the future of their relationship.
There are some nice touches to this story; the confrontation with the muscle in Springfield; the Globe reporter Cosgrove. Finally the teenager at the granny party "shaking her head at the bogusness of it all" are all nice touches.
In retrospect a great deal of my rating it 4 stars goes back to the mid 80's when I first read it in print form. I was living in Boston at the time and I'd just discovered Spenser; some nice memories there. This is a quick listen and there are some snatches of humor that I enjoyed; if you're new to Robert Parker and want to give Spenser a shot; don't start with this one. Most of the Spenser mysteries up to this point are superior to this one.
    Weak 3 stars.
Not as good as others in the series. My mind wandered at times.
Heres a term I hadnt heard - granny sex. Sleazebag invites 40-something women to his home for sex orgies with college boys. A two-way mirror allows others to watch, take pictures and laugh. The older women have sags and wrinkles that 20-somethings dont. That was unsettling.

    An unexpected good story
I have enioyed a few other of Pearce's novels, and I was not expecting a lot from this one.
Mantle is not my favourite narrator for his stories about 'A Dead Man in....'
It was a most interesting plot and well read.
No car chases or superpersons or steamy sexual descriptions, the light hearted humour is still there and there is a mystery...who did kill cock robin?.. and why!
Set in Europe before The Great War. Seymore is sent to Gibralter and Barcelona superficially to investigate theft of Naval Stores while he tries to learn why and how an Englishman died in a Spanish Prison.

    Enjoyable, easy read
I really like the work of Mary Jane Clark, but found this one a little less exciting than most of her books. I did not like the way in which the victim committed suicide, and was disappointed in the ending. I expected a little more substance.
    Dying for Mercy (Unabridged)
Very good and I liked listening to it, especially since it's a long book. I got to listen while driving, while eating and playing games or cleaning. I would recommend this book if you would like books while doing other stuff too.

When a real estate agent Sloane knows is attacked by the violent predator, Sloane finds herself taking a case that threatens her secret plans to leave her long-time lover. Her personal bond with the victim and a would-be relationship with a man she interviews along the way lead Sloane down a dangerous path---one that poisons the investigation as well as her personal life.Sloane's balancing act topples when her father falls ill. Sloane stays on the case, though - no matter how much it strains her personal relationships. Even her partner claims she's in too deep. He doesn't believe there's an arrest on the planet worth a cop's life. Sloane disagrees: Someone's got to take up the fight.
From the worst slums of Chicago's west side to the glittering Loop skyscrapers, Sloane finds no shortage of suspects. As she loses everything she'd called home, she can only hope to find the rapist before she also becomes a victim.
    Members Reviews:
    Four Stars
    good
    Unclear and Uninteresting
This book was a big disappointment to me, starting with the third-person present-tense point-of-view, which I found kind of creepy. The characters were neither interesting nor sympathetic, and the plot went everywhere in seemingly random fashion. This book lacks vitality and real conflict. What's on the page is bland.
"Nobody's really got control. Not in this life."
In Theresa Schwegel's "Last Known Address," Chicago Detective Sloane Pearson is not a happy camper. Her colleagues in the Sex Crimes Division harass her with their stupid pranks and immature gibes; her boyfriend, Eddie, barely speaks to her anymore; her dad has a serious heart condition and a much younger girlfriend whom Sloane detests. She turns to work to blot out the misery that is her constant companion. Her latest case involves a series of assaults on women, during which the perpetrator chokes and rapes his victims. The women have not given the cops any solid leads.
Working this case only increases Sloane's cynicism. Her superiors and partner offer her little support, the women she tries to help cooperate reluctantly, if at all, and she gets the feeling that every situation she encounters is a mountain to be climbed. What she tells a rape victim applies to her, as well: "From this point on, nobody is going to care what you think. Even if you're right." As she follows up numerous leads, most of which prove to be dead ends, Sloane becomes incredibly frustrated; however, she stubbornly persists in her investigation even though her bosses want her to shut it down.
This is a tough read, for a number of reasons. Schwegel's staccato writing style, laced liberally with police jargon, profanities, and non sequiturs, is off-putting. Her use of the present tense is awkward. Another annoying tic is the author's tendency to change points of view from third to first person. Worst of all, however, is the book's unrelenting negativity.

    Publisher's Summary:
In the next few tense seconds, Reacher will make a choice and trigger an electrifying chain of events in this gritty, gripping masterwork of suspense by #1 New York Times best seller Lee Child.
Susan Mark was the fifth passenger. She had a lonely heart, an estranged son, and a big secret. Reacher, working with a woman cop and a host of shadowy feds, wants to know just how big a hole Susan Mark was in, how many lives had already been twisted before hers, and what danger is looming around him now.
Because a race has begun through the streets of Manhattan in a maze crowded with violent, skilled soldiers on all sides of a shadow war. Susan Mark's plain little life was critical to dozens of others in Washington, California, Afghanistan...from a former Delta Force operator now running for the U.S. Senate, to a beautiful young woman with a fantastic story to tell and to a host of others who have just one thing in common: They're all lying to Reacher. A little. A lot. Or maybe just enough to get him killed.
In a novel that slams through one hairpin surprise after another, Lee Child unleashes a thriller that spans three decades and gnaws at the heart of America...and for Jack Reacher, a man who trusts no one and likes it that way, it's a mystery with only one answer: the kind that comes when you finally get face-to-face and look your worst enemy in the eye.

To Me, The Least Compelling of Reacher Stories
This book was OK. But it seemed sort of shallow by comparison to most of the other Reacher stories. If you are a Reacher fan, of course you will want to read it. And you will enjoy it as well. But in my opinion, it just wasn't quite on par with the rest of the series to date.
    Graphic violence
Would you try another book from Lee Child and/or Dick Hill?
I didn't like the voice of the reader. He sounded like some gangster, and my husband and I had to turn the volume off when the violence got too graphic to listen to. I didn't love it.
What could Lee Child have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
    Cut the graphic violence.
How could the performance have been better?
Get a reader who sounded more like the character should be.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Depression
    The Reacher Novels
Would you listen to Gone Tomorrow again? Why?
All of the Reacher novels seem to be similar but they are enertaining and I have read them all.

Shadows Still Remain: An excellent mystery solo debut
Peter de Jonge'sShadows Still Remainis his solo debut, but his background as a co-author with James Patterson clearly shows up here in this fast paced murder mystery set in Lower Manhattan. If you like this genre, you'll quickly find that this one is better than the average police procedural tale.
The first two chapters are where we first encounter Francesca Pena on Thanksgiving Eve as she steps out of an apartment building in the city's East Fifties, and the author's description of the neighborhood are so accurate. She heads Downtown and meets up with her friends in a very hip new bar in Nolita, and proceeds to get wasted. Leaving the Lower East Side bar in the early morning she feels nauseous, and contemplates hailing a cab, but something happens...
We meet our protagonist Darlene O'Hara in the beginning of the third chapter, a striking redhead in her mid-30s who has an eighteen-year-old son (just do the math) named Axl. The author's descriptions of her and the surroundings are quite vivid, as can be seen here:
"Detective Darlene O'Hara licks the cranberry sauce off her thumb and savors the penultimate bite of her homemade turkey sandwich. She is enjoying her modest feast in the empty second-floor detective room of Manhattan's Seventh Precinct, overlooking a windswept corridor of the Lower East Side where so much unsightly city infrastructure--including a highway, bridge ramps, dozens of housing projects and this squat brick station house--has been shoved against the East River."
Her shift at the Seventh Precinct goes fairly quickly until a suspect from the projects is brought in, and Darlene interviews him. The next evening she and her partner, Serge "K" Krekorian, who is "built like a fire hydrant," do a visit the projects, just north of the Williamsburg Bridge. It doesn't lead to much. Their shift ends, and heading back to the precinct house, she encounters a young man in his late teens who has been waiting to report a missing friend, one Francesca Pena.

    Whining!!!
I tired of all the whining characters in this story. Additionally, Ms. Higgins Clark's narrating of the book adds extra annoyance to the listener. The set is staged on the West Coast -- CA, not out on the East coast. The author should really spend the money on a professional for the narrating. The accent interfered with the enjoyment of the story. No offense. It's just not reasonable for west coast characters.
    Not Up To Par
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Not sure. Not as good as the others in the series.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Well at least the one that I liked least was the bad guy.
    Any additional comments?
Just too simple a story. It was easy to miss parts of the listen and still not feel like you missed anything. Not a grabber.
    Good listen

At long last the 6 hrs has come to an end. A cute story line weakened by the author/reader's childlike interpretations and voice modulation. Save your credit.
    Couldn't agree more...too much whining
Maybe this story would have been better if I had read it, but listening to the author's narration certainly made it difficult to get through. The plot was okay, but the narration was poor at best. Not only were the women whiny, so were the men. Laurie
