Publisher's Summary:
The Agency has charted Ko Min-Jung's progress for years until it finally extends her a formal invitation to join their ranks of elite recruits.
Ripped from her family, plucked from her familiar Pyongyang lifestyle, Ko is thrust into Academy existence. Her handlers are determined to wield her into an efficient, professional agent, equipped to protect North Korea from a wide array of threats and foreign aggression.
The only question is how much of Ko's real self will remain after the training ends.
Members Reviews:
A young, confused puppet of the state.
Marionette is set in North Korea, where the options for the average citizen are apparently quite limited. A young woman named Min-Jung Ko leaves her family and life on a farm, and becomes a trainee of The Agency, an arm of the Peopleâs Republic which grooms young adults to become government agents.
Taken by her recruiter to an isolated training facility, Min-Jung becomes the roommate of Chun-Hee, an experienced female trainee with a very different personality and outlook. Their relationship becomes a key element in Min-Jungâs early development, and later her survival, as her âeducationâ proceeds further.
Following the nave Min-Jung as she enters an unfamiliar and scary situation is interesting initially, but with boot camp style training that consists largely of running and hand to hand combat, the plot begins to drag, as academic aspects seem to be lacking. Koâs interaction with the more seasoned Chun-Hee provides a much needed spark, and gives the author opportunities to explore different subjects.
While the path of Min-Jungâs life is seemingly governed by others, several times she has the opportunity to step up and take decisive action, but is not quite able to do so. Although making an effort is admirable, the failures make it hard to get fully behind her. The conclusion is a little muddled, as another is responsible for Min-Jungâs âsuccessâ, and actually becoming an agent, is still a long way from reality.
There were parts of Marionette that I liked, and this series may have potential, but the slow pace may not convince many readers to go along for the ride. Alana Terry has written four Agent Ko novels so far, and the description for the latest entrysays that she is just âhalfway throughâ her training. Apparently Koâs development into an athletic gun wielding fighting machine is not on a very fast track.
Gripping Spy Thriller.
If you like spy thrillers and want to get a bit of a bird's eye view on the very different mindset and culture of North Korea, get this book. Gripping storyline and characters. The Berlin Wall is down and there's no more U.S.S.R., but communism is still the order of the day in North Korea and other countries. You'll find yourself really involved in Ko's life. There are difficult to read portions, but while there is a minimum of bad language, it never descends down into crassness.

This was a surprisingly decent read. The character development was rich, though I think it could have had more movement-- it was tough in a book where the Academy is the only setting in the book aside from the very beginning. This author has great potential and I read this entire book in a few hours.
