Publisher's Summary:
On India's frontier with Tibet, peace is just a façade and security a myth.
The sleepy Himalayan hill station of Mussoorie, near India's border with Tibet, is home to an eclectic mix of residents including Tibetan refugees and former guerrilla fighters, foreign missionaries, Indian military, tourists, and spies. Here, in a top-secret facility facing the snow-clad Himalayas, India's legendary spymaster, Colonel Imtiaz Afridi, keeps a watchful eye on sensitive high-altitude borders. Having been a mountaineer in his youth, Afridi once climbed many of these peaks, including Rataban, a mountain with a treacherous history. When an American agent is shot dead in Mussoorie, both the CIA and India's Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), dispatch undercover agents to investigate. The American's death is quickly linked to the slayings of two Indo-Tibetan Border Police guards, suggesting possible Chinese infiltration. Working with Afridi is the brilliant junior analyst, Annapurna "Anna" Tagore, who helps him unravel these clues and other disturbing signs that something dangerous is brewing.
When more violent acts shatter Mussoorie's calm, the CIA and RAW have no choice but to team up. Soon Afridi and the young Indian and American agents are piecing together a bloody conspiracy of revenge and murder that could shake the very foundations of world peace.

An edge of the seat thriller!
Steve Alter has weaved an extremely gripping thriller with great mastery, the book saves the best twist for the end.
Most of the action in The Rataban Betrayal is largely set in Mussoorie and its immediate neighbourhood Landour.
The murder of an American missionary who is also a CIA agent and simultaneous killing of Indian border gaurds along the Tibet border stir things up in the small town & the Indian and the U.S. intelligence establishments are intrigued & perturbed enough to send undercover operatives to Mussoorie to investigate.
The Indian and American agents eventually join forces under the direction of the wheelchair-bound Colonel Afridi a retired army officer, former mountaineer and spy master. Afridi oversees the covert investigation from his high-tech HQ â the Indian army-run Himalayan Research Institute.
The agents and Afridi soon discover that the murders are part of a larger conspiracy.
Having lived in Mussoorie for years the author Steve Alter has an insiderâs view which adds heft to the book.
The plot moves quickly & the writing flows whilst being evocative and descriptive for the most, with an occasional dash of humour.
The reason that the reader stays on the seat's edge is because of the amazing mix of factual, historical & fictional sequences which are held tightly together.
Afridi is, in fact, the bookâs high point, its real hero â wise, decisive, loyal, hard as nails, but with his heart in the right place. Iâd love to read another Afridi adventure and so I suspect, would most readers.
Welcome Col Alfridi into your literary life!!
I could not put the book down. Stephen's creative use of familiar locations was transformed into an array of dramatic props for this fast paced novel. The story felt like a river kayak ride on a fast paced Himalayan mountain river sweeping through a complex array of boulders that produced enticing eddies on the side of a rushing torrent.
