The Amazing Mr. Trunnell

Written 100 years ago, a wonderfully written tale of the sea. Mr. Trunnell, a fascinating figure of the title contrasted to an evil, mysterious and unpredictable ship's captain. Juxtaposed to these two, the second mate, the narrator of this tale who grows under the tutelage of Mr. Trunnell. A story of good, evil, loyalty, authority. trust and perseverance. The dialog, of the sea and of the times, draws one into the story. Any reader who loves stories of the sea and/or adventure should not miss this fine tale.

Loved this book. When characters stay with me. When painful and unfair things happen that crush my heart. I'm right in the center of their friendship, heartache, loss. Until I'm lifted, as I knew I would be. And this is a beautiful thing.

passive and pedestrian

Elena Varvello was billed as being the next Elena Ferrante. The story is also billed as being an unputdownable thriller, "the viciously gripping page-turner of summer 2017". I picked this up eagerly anticipating a good read. It is nothing more than a coming-of-age story, passive and pedestrian at that. I struggled to get through it because I was expecting a twist any second. It never came. I blame the publicity - if they'd promoted it for what it was, I may have enjoyed it - for what it is. Elena Varvello may have the first name Elena, but she is and will never be Elena Ferrante.

Dragged

I sometimes feel I am missing something. Other people love a book, people whose opinions I respect and often share, but I just donât get it. I feel a bit like this with Can You Hear Me? It is marketed as both suspense and coming-of-age. It is a coming-of-age story, but I am struggling to find any suspense.

The narrator, 16-year-old Elia, begins by telling you the climax of the story. His father is having some kind of mental crisis. Elia suspects he was involved in the disappearance of a boy and he will go on to take the teenage babysitter from next door into the woods.

Of course many great books employ this technique and yet still manage to pique your curiosity because you want to know how they get there, books as diverse as Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier or Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut. However here, I didnât feel that there was any interest or anything to feel curious about, because there is no struggle or conflict, no sense that anyone is trying to influence events.

Elia drifts through the summer, doing coming-of-age stuff, hanging out with a kid his parents disapprove of, challenging him to dares, getting the hots for his mateâs mum, and meanwhile his father is disintegrating.

Algeria. A crime, a trial, a verdict, long weeks in jail, execution. Sound familiar? No, this is not L'ÉTRANGER but the real-life case of Fernand Iveton, a communist activist and the only European to be executed in connection with the ultimately successful FLN campaign against French colonialism in North Africa. Camus himself attempted to intercede and plead for clemency. But all appeals were unsuccessful, not because of the magnitude of his crimeâthe bomb he planted was only symbolic and too small to hurt anyone, and he was arrested before it could go offâbut because the government wished to make an example. Franois Mitterand, the justice minister at the time, came to regret his decision, and cited it as one of the reasons why he abolished the death penalty when he became President in 1981. Joseph Andras gave a similar motivation for his novel: to right a wrong knowingly perpetrated by the French state.

The short book, a mere 140 pages, proceeds in alternating chapters. One series moves from November 1956 to February 1957, beginning with Fernand Iveton waiting in the rain to pick up his bomb, and taking him through his arrest, interrogation, and imprisonment. It is difficult reading, partly because of its subject matterâFernand is tortured for days, for example, by a combination of electricity and waterboardingâpartly because of its style, which jumps around without warning between Fernand himself, other activists in the movement, and his wife. Andras freely acknowledges that the facts in these sections come mainly from the book POUR L'EXEMPLE, L'AFFAIRE FERNAND IVETON by Jean-Luc Einaudi, though he arranges them with the sensibility of a novelist, not an historian.

Alternate chapters go back several years in time to Fernand's meeting with the woman who would become his wife, Hélène.

Two Parallel Universes

This story is told through Beth, a pastor's wife who has passed on. Even in death, she questions where she is and what she needs to do to help a young teenage girl, Frankie. She travels back and fourth between two realms.

In one realm, we meet Lynn. Lynn is a climbing instructor who is working side by side with another instructor leading two other climbers. We learn that one of the climbers is in fact the pastor who Beth was married to. We also learn Beth had a divine intervention in setting this up in order to create the connection between Lynn and Frankie.

The other realm consists of Frankie. Frankie is a troubled teenager who is questioning just who she is and where she came from. Beth follows Frankie along her journey and is determined to make sure she is alright. She watches hoping that the two realms will come together.

Jannie Meisberber is an enjoyable narrator. She has a soft, gorgeous British accent. She's clear, articulate and easy on the ears.

I'd recommend this book for just about anyone.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Jannie Meisberger kept the story flowing right along.

The skillful weaving of four stories, including the deceased narrator's, makes for a rich listening experience. As the narrator recounts the victories and defeats, the moments of heartache and heart-swell, in the lives she observes, she also tells of her own. The healing she sought so desperately in life for those she loved, she ultimately needs for herself.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Damnable Legacy?

Frankie Rizzoni, one of my favorite characters, is a spitfire whose antics are creative, rebellious, and sometimes heartbreaking.

Enchanting tale

This is a book that you need to suspend reality to listen to. It is enchanting, whimsical and poignant, it tugs at the heart strings in a very unusual storyline and is unlike any other story I have read. I loved it .

beautiful story worded with such tenderness. I couldn't put it down. at one point got a bit teary and nothing makes me cry. the narration from the author was perfect and made the story alive. perfectly wonderful.

the naration is good as you are able to differenciate between characters and emotions.

Emotional and brilliant

I never could have imagined how much better this book would be with Carrie reading it. In fact, I thought the book could not get much better in general. Amazing story and Carrie's different voices and tones really bring it to life.
