Love this book

Absolutely loved this book, Im currently listening to it again, and praying for a sequel!

Emotionally accurate and amazing!!!!

it took me 3 days to finish but by God it was a good 3 days. I was captivated by the book almost instantly and how raw the authors feelings were almost poured out of the pages! 9/10 in my ratings. As a perfect 10 would be offered if I knew the author and could congratulate him.

Good story but of a flat ending

I really enjoyed this it was an interesting insight and honest account of how someone thinks. It would be eye opening to some and will resonate with other (although they might not want to admit it out loud).

I found the ending quite flat to be honest though he thought he got his comeuppance but I thought he just had a bit of a rough night he deserved worse but I guess the fact that I felt that way about him means the narrator did their job well. Worth a short listen.

Hilarious!

Since I'm a HUGE and long time Slenderman fan I knew I had to read this.

First off, this book is humorous. If you're looking for something serious then don't even bother purchasing this. You're only wasting your money and time to write bad reviews.

But, if you're looking for something funny and entertaining then this is for you. I enjoyed every page and all of the "facts" it had in store. I recommended this for other Slenderman fans.

It's a good book but some of the "facts"do not go with the others and others are just plain against the legend of slenderman. Anyway it's a good book and is worth the money for the laughs and scarred friends crying because of nightmares. Probably not good for children under the age of 8.

Some facts, some giggles

If you are looking to buy this book, it is up to you whether it is worth the money or not. I personally enjoyed it, being a long-time slender fan. It does not contain 100% true facts, nor is it written in a very serious tone. I'd say it reminded me of one of those "scary story" books that you would read to scare your friends at a slumber party, with facts about the creaks and noises in your house being monsters. Hope this helped, because the time you spent reading this sure did. >;)

I get chills in the dark, if you look up H.P Lovecraft it says he suffered night terrors about face less demons....freaky. I'm not even gonna try the mirror thing. Basically I think it was a good book, not very long but good. I recommend buying it if you like Slender Man....but if you show interest in him, it makes it more likely to be his victim...

Darkly Witty and Unabashedly Honest

If You Left is a raw, darkly witty, and poignant look inside the head and world of a woman struggling with bipolar disorder and the toll is takes on her family and those around her.

Althea is a woman that has her problems. Not only is she stuck in a marriage that should have most likely ended years ago, but is also has a severe mental disorder that clouds her mind when things get too much to handle. In this book you will follow her down a path that, though paved with good intentions, tends to get more complicated as she moves forward. Her marriage is at times toxic and her relationship with her child is hanging on by a threadâif it was even there to begin with. She wants to make things right, but for this summer, Althea will make decisions that will change everything. The only real question is that when all is said and done, will Althea be end up where she wants to be?

I am going to be honest with you all. I had mixed feelings this book. I truly enjoyed the unique and forthright voice of Althea. There was something so fascinating about being inside this womanâs head. The mental dialog, second guessing her every feeling, and snide comments kept me flipping the pages to see what would happen next. She is a truly complex character. The author twisted and turned a story about a woman with bipolar disorder to create something that is a sincere and at points a bleak snapshot of her life. There is no sugar coating anything in this book. The author lays it all out there for everyone to see and in a way the story became very addictive to me.

However, I wanted more for her at the end. Donât worry. There are no spoilers here. I will just say that I really hoped for a different turn of events for Althea, even if that was just in one small aspect of her life. Yet, there is a truth to the end of the book that respects the core fundamentals of who this characters is. Though I think many readers will find it a let down, I really felt that it did honor the character. In a way, this is how it should have endedâlike it or not.

I know that there are reviews all over the board with this book and I think that is because this book is so unabashedly honest. Personally, I liked getting inside the charactersâ heads and taking a look at their summer of change. I laughed at the dark humor.

Goodnight sweet prince

This is the conclusion to the tale of a family which owns a distillery, begun in the rather better Flower of Scotland. One of the more interesting characters, Andrew, survived WW1 and is running the family firm which he never expected to inherit. He hopes that his own son Drew will take an interest when he is older. We also meet familiar characters, such as a war-blinded man and his wife, as well as new characters. Expect some strong language in context.

One interesting aspect is a look at the bondage system of labour. A farm worker would be hired for a year and was expected to bring a woman with him. She would keep his cottage and do field work. This woman, a bondager, would be made available for hire by her family from the age of thirteen or so, after which she was on her own. She was not paid and got nothing but her keep, unless the labourer chose to marry her later. The labourer was not made responsible for any children she had, and she was unable to refuse his advances or those of the landowner. She could be cast off at the end of the year. The distillery family is shown as unaware of the medieval bondage system and when they learn that it still exists, astonished and disapproving, taking steps to improve matters.

We also see what happens when a well-off woman goes quietly batty after a stillbirth. There's heavy drinking of whisky, but we come to understand that it may not be good for your health. The book builds to WW2 but as in the first book, life is not represented that well, because we hear very little about rationing of anything from food to clothes to petrol. Men up to forty get the dreaded call-up and some of our characters become pilots. The action stays in Britain.

The author was a man writing under a woman's name, which shows in the frequent immersion in the male viewpoint which is less usual in social history romance.

Very well done.

Dickinson has created a wonderful, and quite believable, mystery imbued with humanity and sympathy. The sense of period, time and place are excellent; the characters and story are realistic and interesting. There is a quiet humor to Powerscourt, along with his relationship with Lady Lucy, the provide balance to the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am happy knowing I have the rest of the series ahead of me.
