The best book I have EVER read

I loved loved loved this book!!

It was hilarious. But also so on the mark with every emotion that she spoke of.

I cannot recommend enough. I basically stopped speaking to everyone for two days as I was so obsessed with it.

Amazing book and such a great performance too. Great accents!

Very Enjoyable

Funny, sweet story. Made me laugh and cry (always the sign of a good story) Held my attention from beginning to end. Found the two main characters a bit frustrating at times as in 'for heavens sake get to the point' however having said that I fell a bit in love with Elliot.

Disappointed

The narration was really stilted, as though there was a full stop between ever word and wherever there was an exclamation or a "ha", it was badly delivered and just annoying. You'll know what I mean if you've listened. The story was really unfulfilling and main character was a bit frustrating - although likeable, a bit pathetic.

I absolutely loved this book. I laughed and actually cried which I don't do at books usually. Fantastic

More magic from this author!

I listened to this book on audiobook and it was one of those that I would stay in the car to listen to the end of the chapter once I got home from work and even tried to sneak in some lunchtime listening if I could manage it too. I love Mhairi McFarlane's books because they just tell it how it is. Her writing is very honest and is therefore very funny! The start of this book in particular was extremely relatable to me because it began with a journey from the south of England to Harrogate and I started listening to this on the journey from the south of England to Harrogate.

Not memorable

The plot was just okay. I am behind in my reviewing and maybe that is a good thing. When I have to go back and browse the book in order to remember it, then it is just okay and not memorable.

I could not see the end coming but in hind-site (and reviewing) it was the plot that was slow and, thus, unmemorable and, thus, only warrants three stars.

In my opinion, not Toews best.

Would you try another book from Miriam Toews and/or Erin Moon?

I love Miriam Toews and I love Erin Moon but Irma was too immature for me to "get." But since Moon's reading of Toews' All My Puny Sorrows was one of my favorite books, I'll be back for more. Of course, I don't really know what girls and women from Mennonite families sound like but Erin Moon adds to the sympathetic look that Toews provides and until Irma in this third book that I've listened to, I was really engaged by each character to whom I was introduced.

Getting it right.

So much about this book gets it right. Miriam Toews speaks my language. She's one of those writers that says it the way folks are thinking and feeling it without knowing it until she articulates it for them and they go, "ya!" "No kidding!" "Ah...." The audiobook is great in many ways but...Menno Simons is pronounced like the first name Simon not Simmons and low German is pronounced with the accent on the low not the 'ger' in German. When reading a book all about a certain culture it seems important to get it right!

Emotional to the core

Brilliant writing! Unforgettably intense. Could not stop listening. So enveloped in the story, you want to know how it continues.

Brilliantly done

I had an idea I'd love this, and I wasn't disappointed. It is refreshing to read a "real" account of what happens within the Military Industrial Complex and Rachael L. McIntosh does a brilliant job of weaving fact and fiction into a wonderfully enjoyable story. I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in gaining an insight into a world we all need to know about. I'm about to start reading book 2, and thoroughly looking forward to it.

Loved it

The character is easy to like and relate to. I read the book on the first half of vacation and wish there was a second book so that I could continue now! Highly recommended!

Wow! Yikes!

I devoured this book in record time! I can't even begin to express how much I love this book. So expertly crafted, I can't tell fact from fiction. The general tone makes me dread the cynical machinations of the military industrial complex more than I already do, but at the same time, I can't wait for the next book so I can find out more!

This book was recommended to me by a friend and to be honest I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it since aside from a couple of Ayn Rand novels my choices in fiction normally have a male main character. Boy was I wrong. With her well crafted narrative Rachael sucked me into Jocelyn McLaren's world as she struggled to safely navigate the world of corporate back stabbing, grandstanding, finagling, and mystery. Her workplace experiences reminded me of favorite films like 'Executive Suite', the intrigue and mystery of the buildup in books by favorite authors like Alistair MacLean, and a little humor like a good TV sitcom.

a fascinating book

on the whole a great book. I like the way the different story lines are interwoven. Though the first section did randomly6ùñ

Not my kind of thing

Whilst eloquently descriptive and a clever concept, I found it boring. Hours 'wasted' on multiple descriptions of driving a car..... As the story developed it became a little too far fetched. Last part of the story was the most interesting but I think on balance I wished I'd not persevered to the end.

Captivating

This richly written story wanders through time, on the edge of normality, rooted in the essence of being human. A bit of a mystery, the ends tie up leaving you wanting more.

Beautifully written - a very wierd book!

Really don't know how to rate this book. As a writer Yann really knows how to beautifully write on a subject. It's an extremely interesting book.... but bizarre at the same time!

Three separate stories, which are linked, but I'm left not being sure how, exactly, they are linked! I'm sure there's probably a hidden message in there somewhere, which I don't think I've managed to grasp. Did a "google" but haven't come across what I'm sure will eventually be "blindingly obvious".

So, really, really enjoyed the journey through the book, the richness of it, which is great compared to some of the books which are just hard to keep reading. So, do I recommend, it has to be a yes... and if you read it and understand it... let me know!!

1976 - long, hot and a wonderful experience

Despite the searing heat and water shortages, the long hot summer of 1976 was a magical experience for the young and Joanna Cannon has done an incredible job in conjuring this era back for us to enjoy once again. I well remember complaining about the heat (!), the stifling houses with carpet the colour of cough medicine and long evenings pouring over the Kay's catalogue trying to work out if I could afford the 48 weekly payments of 25p for a pair of dream shoes. This is a story set in an ordinary UK town and follows two little girls and their wry observations of the adults in their locality. One man is treated as a rank outsider by the rest of the community and their struggle to understand why he is treated this way makes a very moving and poignant story. There is the mystery of a disappeared woman, an arson attack and a kidnapped baby all woven into a tale of everyday life filled with believable characters. This is peppered with very frequent laughs and the odd teary moment and is an overall triumph of unashamed nostalgia and humanity.

Paula Wilcox does a lovely job of bringing this book to life and handles the male and female characters with equal aplomb. After this impressive debut I am really looking forward to reading more from this talented author.

Schnell und einfach

Las sich sehr schnell, und war auch unterhaltsam, aber nur 4 Sterne, weil die Geschichte sehr vorhersehbar ist. Für leichte Lektüre unterwegs sehr empfehlenswert.
