    Short time to read
A wonderful short story about the Alaskan wilderness and lifestyle. The author writes with a style all his own, filled with excellence. I will look into other reads by this author. But for now I only have a little time, and this book enhances my time while I wait, and I can even finish the story while I am waiting. Short time to read and still get the whole story. I like that a lot sometimes. So it was wonderfully spent time with Michael S. Nuckols' Old Momma's Alaskan Buffet: A short story set in the great land of Alaska. Well done. : )
    Charming and nostalgic
I was hesitant to invest my time in a short story as I love long novels. But something seemed to draw me to this setting. I really enjoyed the story and beautiful descriptions. Now I look forward to more of Mr. Nuckois stories.
    This is short and simulation
What a wonderful short story with all possible implications
Loved this! The descriptions took me back to Alaska

    Publisher's Summary:
Hail Gin's taxi and take a seat for the ride of your life! When we first meet Jindriska/Gin, she is a New York cabbie, a struggling Czech immigrant alternately buoyed-up or battered by life in the guts of the great city. Though married to Talibe, a legal immigrant from West Africa, she lives with Gloria, a Cuban lesbian artist and tiny Josito, the baby of Gloria's jailed friend. Through Alex, the Russian owner of the garage on 47th Street, Gin rents a succession of yellow taxis of dubious reliability and origin. Thus she meets a collection of characters: hookers, Lotharios, fraudsters, friends, lovers, hangers-on, and an architect who once dreamed of changing the skyline of Manhattan. "The gravity of big cities captures us," writes Pekarkova, "and when people let themselves be lured... their inevitable butt-falls can be made gentler only by their love for the City; for the unique and thorny planet." Yet despite Gin's philosophical musings, it's all about the money: Everybody needs it. Gin drives at all hours through the canyons of skyscrapers, along night streets that glisten with slithering rainbows of motor oil and rainwater, seeking fares, trying to save enough cash to pay the rent and to survive.
Pekarkova's eye for telling detail, her ironic humor, and her deft ear for dialogue helps to create a powerful tale with plenty of laughs, one that is rich in incident and comes in time to a shattering climax.

    Title: Gwendolen
    Author: Diana Souhami
    Narrator: Laura Kirman
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 48 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-25-14
    Publisher: Quercus
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
I was winning until I met your gaze... Gambling at the roulette tables of the Kursaal, Gwendolen Harleth glances up to meet Daniel Deronda's arresting stare. Striking, selfish and wilful, she is at that moment the mistress of her destiny.
Thirty years on, the flawed heroine and true protagonist of Eliot's last great novel writes her confessional to the man whose ever-imagined gaze has prevailed throughout her life. The egotism, naiveté and sensitivity of her blazing youth is evoked with bittersweet wisdom; a passionate remembrance of the events leading up to the marriage that broke her spirit, and the loss of the man who broke her heart.
Moving, original and elegant, this is a bravura re-imagining of the life of one of English literature's most multi-faceted and contradictory heroines.

"Completely beguiling" (Rebecca Mead, author of The Road to Middlemarch)

A depressive, plain read about a plain character
Gwendolen is a strange book. If I could compare it to something, I would say it is like a musical performance...picture one instrument that starts a song by playing one note. You think "this is strange" but wait for something to change. Then other instruments come in, but they keep playing the same note, holding the same note. Despite the variance in sound type, the tone is the same.
That is this book....the tone is the same.
When I began reading Gwendolen, I found it very interesting. The book started with a certain tone, and it worked. Depressive, uncertain, yet egocentric feelings permeated most pages, and they made sense because we know quite quickly that we are likely looking back after a relatively easily guessed sorrowful situation has taken place. This tone persists through recollections of that event and period...also understandable. However, what is not understandable is that the same tone continues even after the character of Gwendolen finds a road to recovery...no matter how tentative that recovery may be....it is peppered with interesting characters and times and places that could have afforded a change in the composition and overall greyscale of the book. Even an exciting milestone and turning point Gwendolen experiences manages to feel dry....and the last pages have the same feeling as the first.
Gwendolen self-absorbed is the theme of this book, and she manages to stay basically unlikeable throughout the text. I say unlikeable because there is nothing defined about her besides the event and year of her life she lets define her and her stunning physical beauty. However, Gwendolen sees herself as the center of many universes and can never wrap her mind around the fact that other people do not also see this as so.
I give this book three stars, because the author is a skilled writer. I'm sure this was a rough undertaking...crafting a book using an existing character in literature and trying to make them more while staying true to a basic essence.

Length: 8 hrs and 53 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-25-14
    Publisher: Orion Publishing Group
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Eighteen-year-old Twist doesn't have much. No money, no home and no family. All he has is his reputation as one of the most daring street artists in London - whose unique skills are matched only by his infamous talent as a climber and freerunner.
But when he finds himself on the run from the police, he knows that he could be about to lose the last thing he has left - his freedom. Until he is saved by the mysterious Dodge. When Dodge introduces him to con artist and art 'collector' Cornelius Faginescu, Twist realises that he finally has the chance to be part of something. All that he has to do is put aside his moral objections and learn to steal...

    A new urban Oliver Twist
This is Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist reimagined, 176 years after the original was published. It is gritty and urban, dark and (forgive me) twisted. When you consider the themes and storyline of the original Dickens novel, that was also very much the same for its time. But I suggest you don't compare the two books, that you come fresh to Twist, with no expectations (as opposed to 'great expectations'). Because really, it deserves to stand on its own.
We meet Oliver Twist as an 18-year old orphan with a rap sheet, eluding police. He's an incredible graffiti artist who may be as good as, maybe better than, Banksy; able to memorize and reproduce the great masters with an incredible eye and meticulous detail. He comes to the attention of FBoss (Fagin), when it appears the thuggish Sikes and Red (Nancy) have gotten into deadly trouble with the Russian mafia about - what else - some paintings. They need Twist, but he doesn't need them. Not until he starts to fall for Red...
This is an unsettling walk through London's underbelly, exposing a seam of crime most people never dream about. It's very visual, so I imagine the film - the screenplay appears to have been written(?) - will be terrific to watch. Especially the chase scenes where Twist and Red do an urban ninja thing, running and jumping on, off and around buildings to elude pursuers: police, villains or both. These scenes are a little harder to read, but you get the gist. A lot of London is used as the backdrop, including inside The Shard; that's going to look fabulous.
So sit back and enjoy the fairly wild ride. There are lots of plot twists and turns, and the art side of things is fascinating. As is the ending. Not what you expect.
A Replay on a Classic Which Works Well
It seems fashionable to take the Classics and update them. Generally I am not a fan of this particular phenomenon but if you share my prejudice this could be the one to change your mind.
Grass's Twist, like the original, never knew his Mother and has been through a variety of homes and institutions. Unlike the original he is, by the age of eighteen, no stranger to the Law. Pursued by the Police he is saved by Dodge who works for a Romanian Gangster called Cornelius Fagin. Fagin has his own crime syndicate which includes Sykes, plus bulldog, and Red, alias Nancy, whom our latter day Oliver falls for in a more romantic way than Dickens'. She,however, owes her freedom to Sykes who views her as his property. When Oliver is invited to join the gang little does he know he has been deliberately recruited for a specific job.

    Members Reviews:
    Good Read
Overall it was a good story line. The plot was interesting enough for those with a curious mind to want to keep reading until the end. Nothing spectacular or "epic", but that isn't the intent of this short novel. You basically get a "day in the life" view of some unsavory characters and a few of the people in their lives. Some good action scenes, love interests, friends, family, and some harsh businessmen. Plenty of death and destruction. The book does what it should by giving you an understanding of who these characters are without taking a long time to do so. 3 stars because I feel the author can improve the flow and imagery of his writing to enhance the experience of the reader and create more depth.
    Short lived by Michael Pritsos
Short lived tells the stories of a couple different characters in a dark and gritty way. The book captures the readers attention from beginning to end. Nine different stories that intertwine in a excellent way. I will be expecting more books from this author
    Great Read
Talk about a page turner. I enjoyed how each chapter changed perspectives on the same story. I really hope there is more to come from the author about the York brothers. Very well written and I didn't stop reading it until I was finished.
    solid five star read!!!!!
If you're looking for a short and thrilling book look no further these short story's compound into a rich and cultured character base. Definitely a good read
    Beautifully Gritty
The author's gritty descriptions paint an extremely vivid picture of the unfortunate darkness that can be found within all of us. This was a very enjoyable, and very dramatic book, and I am glad that I picked it up.

    Publisher's Summary:
Grappling with the loss of her brother three decades prior, a woman digs into her family's past and uncovers generations of betrayal, half-truths, and secrecy
Imogen's brother, Johnny, disappeared thirty years ago, ostensibly the victim of a drowning accident - a story to which everyone but Imogen subscribes. Johnny was too good of a swimmer, she reasons, and his body was never found. Imogen alone believes that he is still alive. To get to the truth, she dives into her memory and her family's history, all the way back to World War I-era Ireland and the long-buried events that forever changed them.
Lyrical, gripping, and compact, This Is Not a Novel is Imogen's first-person account of her search. Portrayed through fragments of memory, letters, and poetry, the book is not only a retelling - it is an appeal to Johnny, wherever he is, to come back home.
    Members Reviews:
Yet another masterpiece from one of Ireland's literary geniuses
Jennifer Johnston is probably my favorite Irish author. Her books -- and this one is no exception -- are short, compact, understated, and filled with tight symbolism. Usually she even has a puzzle-like aspect to her novels, where you're waiting until the very last scene to figure out how all of the pieces fit together. However, it's surprisingly hard to find her work in the US.
This book was a real delight. I read it in one day. It follows a young woman who has been mysteriously stuck in a mental hospital by her family. We wonder why until the very end. In the meantime, the action jumps back two generations, and then forward in time, so that we are forced to wonder whether character traits are genetic.
It's not until the end, though, that you figure out what the novel was really about. And then you sit there amazed at the author's brilliance -- and her understanding of family dynamics.
