    A very slow read
Usually I take a day or two to read a mystery. I'm still working on this one ... for months now. So that should say it all. The mystery, location and characters are all interesting and that is what keeps me going. However, reading this book is like coming late to a meeting and trying to figure out what is going on...who? What? Who?
It's a continuation of a complex story and the author does not summarize past events or characters so that the reader can get up to speed. The prior books in the series were not available. This is my first purchase in the series....possibly the last.

it was bad. Were I in my teens
Predictably, it was bad. Were I in my teens, I would think differently. But as a NYC resident, it's just so painfully one-dimensional and shallow, and to that point I think there should probably be some sort of label warning that unless you're of a certain socioeconomic class, you won't be able to relate to this story. There was a real missed opportunity to be thoughtful and universal, like Nadja Spiegelmanâwho came from privilege but still writes in an honest and connecting wayâbut as soon as I read "I think we have the same decorator" I closed the book and concluded that, "No, I'm not going to get anything out of this." Sadly, not even amusement.
    readable but no "wow" moments
This very readable book reminded me a Woody Allen movieâlots of intense, witty dialogue among a young Jewish group of NYC friends. There were beads of wisdom in the conversations; comments that made me put the book down a second and think. Haimoff makes writing seem effortless; in just a few sentences sheâs able to convey the pulse of New York City. The fact that the novel takes place six months after 9/11 adds a more serious tone, though this isnât, in fact, a 9/11 book. The time frame is just a backdrop.
My problem with the book is that Iâm a middle-class, non-Jewish suburbanite in my sixties, so I couldnât relate to the wealthy NYC Jewish 20-somethings. Yes, the book contained some ageless wisdom and humor, but in fact the book was written for the young. I knew some of the music references only because I have kids in their twenties. And true to the age, itâs a bit angst-y. The book opens with the main character fantasizing about marrying her current crush (whoâs a total jerk), and I found it pretty silly and boring. Still, her brightness and intelligence did lure me in, and I ended up liking the main character and the book. In fact, I realized there is a connection between a new college grad in search of a job and a recently retired person in search of meaningful activity. Some things transcend ageâfinding meaning in life spans all ages.
This isnât a âwowâ book. Nothing important happens. It annoyed me that there were no chapters, plus the ending is too abrupt. But, that said, I enjoyed reading it.
This is so not a 9/11 book
Don't let anyone you know pigeonhole this book to you. It is not the kind of book focused on and sermonizing about the angst post-9/11.
It's about people who you'd assume are way too rich to relate to (heck, they live in Manhattan. They've gotta be rich). And yet somehow you do relate to them. And you find yourself liking them. Rooting for them. Wanted to know more about them. And seeing a little bit of yourself in them.
    And that's not so bad.
Read this book before they massacre it into a movie.

    Antigone meets Afghanistan
The Watch - a kind of modern re-working of Sophocles' Antigone set in Afghanistan - is a richly drawn, quick reading novel. At first I was unsure whether the book was going to be too little nuanced, turning into a nakedly anti-war novel with not much substance. I was relieved to be proven wrong. Not that I am "pro-war" - just that I didn't want to read a novel that was overtly grinding a black or white political axe. Like Sophocles' tragedy, The Watch plays on the dichotomy between nomos (human convention) and phusis (natural law) - that which man conjures to fit his various and changing needs vs. the unwritten trans-personal laws one is "bound" to follow or obey. What I liked about the book is that it presents both sides - the Afghanis and Americans as being oppressed (in a different but quite mutually destructive way) by the same arbitrary laws of mankind - all the while searching, quite poignantly at times, for a way to go beyond them and simply do "what's right". This doing of "what's right" is initially set up, for the sake of poignancy, to fall on the shoulders of a young Afghan girl wishing to bury her dead brother - dead at the hands of Americans defending themselves against an insurgent attack. There is "right" and "wrong" on both sides - reasons for the Americans to be highly suspicious but insensitive and reason to see the girl as principled but displaying a naive devotion. The book revolves around this tension - this confrontation of wills. What the book was so successful at, in my opinion, was its articulation of how war (especially between such too different cultures) makes getting "what's right" so incredibly hard - how the road to hell is truly paved with good intentions. For, when two people(s) don't understand each other how is it possible for one to really help the other? Helping people and achieving a geo-politcal end under the guise of helping people are not the same thing; this is what the book addresses - whether we can break free of the powers that be in this world (our Creon's - to evoke Antigone) so as to allow us enough room to reach out, to extend ourselves far enough, that we may approach something meaningful being done.
    ENG372 Transnational Literature Book Review
This book in one I truly couldn't put down. I found myself reading almost the entirety of it in only a few hours and recommending it to everybody I've talked to. As a person who wouldn't typically pick this genre as a typical one to read, I am happy with my purchase as well as the magic of Bhattacharya's writing.

    Changes
There were two short stories in this collection and both were good. I always enjoy it when an author makes the different stories in their collections, well, different. Perhaps it would be better put to say that they have two very different flavors. (Or maybe I'm just hungry...hmmm)
I especially enjoyed the first story about the end of a relationship. I found it sad and poignant, but also strangely hopeful. I thought the author handled it beautifully.
The second story revolves around three sisters who finally realize that their relationship with each other has to change. That childhood methods of interacting with each other were no longer healthy and were, in fact, driving them apart.
I enjoy short stories immensely but they can make reviews difficult to write. I try hard not to give much away and ruin someone else's enjoyment. So I will end by saying that these are worth a read.
    Lovin' It!!
When can we expect more of your work??
    excellent writing!
I found it very interesting and would like to read more by Andrea.
Thanks and keep up the good work.
