An odd short story. Will leave you feeling like you missed something.
Ever read a book that has left you thinking "huh, what did I just read ?" . To me, that was exactly my thoughts after finishing The Chosen by Emma Calin. I picked this up off my kindle as I was in the mood for a quick read and yes, since it is a short story it was a quick read but as I got into the book. I was like , to myself "what am I reading?" as it was confusing and didn't make much sense to me. As the book starts off with these two guys and one of them is a quick rich guy who has just got himself a mail-order bride (well that's what it sounded like to me) and he's talking about this big payday coming in and how his luck is changing for the best. Then him and his friend decide to come up with a plan to get insurance money by crashing their truck. The thing is though as this is happening, an actual accident occurs and leaves one of them dead and the other alive - the one dead was the guy who had this new life planned and the alive one goes to the new bride and the last words were "You were chosen" and story ends. To be honest, I am not sure exactly what I read but it seems that the moral of the story is if you are lucky, don't put all your eggs in one basket as everything can change in a second and also Karma can be a pain in the buttocks.
I am curious to see if anyone else has read this book and welcome any thoughts on the short story as right through the story , I did feel as if I was missing something important.
A Short Story with a Punch
This is a short story with a punch - a wholly unexpected ending - that will keep you guessing right down to the last sentence. I love it! It's a classic triangle told in a non-classic way,the voice is strong and direct. Social issues are raised, this is a story set among the downtrodden - the 99 percent -, people who desperately want to "make it" but the "good life" continues to elude them and it can't be otherwise, because they're not prepared for the fight. They think they are, but they're not. Emma Calin manages to draw remarkable portraits of people you feel you have met, they're so real. And in just a few strokes, she depicts precisely the strained relationship between the two protagonists. Yes,they're men, but there's a woman too, "of course" as aptly indicated in the opening.
In short, a thoroughly enjoyable read, and an excellent audio - beautifully read out by Oscar Sparrow in a melodious voice. A pleasure to listen to!
This Story Blew Me Away
Short Stories are like snacks between the meals of full-length novel-feasts. You'll finish the new short story by Emma Calin, The Chosen, in a scant fifteen minutes. But you'll want to read it again for the dialogue, and then maybe once more for the eerie setting.
Two low-lifes hatch plans for making it big, starting with a humdrum paint job and devolving into an insurance scheme. There's a lady in the story, too, to coin a phrase.
But the star of this story is the amazing dialogue, right out of a Harold Pinter stage-play.
"And what about cash right now -- we're skint mate."
"Aye -- I've already thought of that. It's what Henry B. Grabitt calls a contingency.
