    Title: Unwell
    Author: Marie Chow
    Narrator: Lori J. Moran
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 23 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-28-14
    Publisher: Career Student Productions, LLC
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
How do you tell your child that you won't be there when they grow up? Unwell is the raw, honest story of a mother who writes to her unborn child, sharing her decision of choosing not to be a mother. She doesn't choose abortion. Nor does she consider adoption. Instead, she decides to give her child a fighting chance in life, without the angst and drama that's shaped her own bittersweet life.
With a poignant lack of emotion, the young mother shares her life story. As the child of Asian parents who moved to America early in her life, the mother shares how her life disintegrated after her parents' divorce. From upper middle class suburban to sharing her mean aunt's house to a one bedroom apartment in a shabby neighborhood, this mother endures the indignity that comes with the change of status. From her father's absence to her mother becoming a married man's mistress, her story reads like a tragic Victorian novel set in the 21st century, but that's where the similarity ends-she is definitely not a shy country miss and she certainly did not take the easy way out.
This amazing story chronicles the life of a woman who fought for everything she got, faced her demons, and made the hard choices. Her fortitude and candor are disarming, her avant-garde views strangely endearing. Through this glimpse into the life of a woman of integrity, sacrifice and love, you'll feel her pain, live her failures, and cheer for the meager joys that come her way. But the one thing you'll never do - is forget her. Or her story.

The dark and compelling story of a courageous child and the woman she becomes
Marie Chow's debut novel draws you into the mind, and then into the life, of a young woman faced with making a formidable decision for her unborn child. When I first met the narrator, she was far from someone with whom I'd typically empathize. But intrigue quickly drew me in, and I lost quite a bit of sleep following the story to completion!
As the story progresses, it reveals a troubled past where a smart, resourceful child is forced to navigate unfortunate circumstances brought about by misfortune, deceit, and cross-cultural mishap. First generation Chinese compatriots will recognize many elements of her experience, most painful and some comforting, skillfully relayed with a measure of poignancy and dark humor--one cannot help but feel some glee at her critical descriptions of snooty relatives. The reader begins to empathize with the girl and understand the person she becomes as she transitions into her adult life.
Engaging portrayal of a complicated Chinese woman
This book is a gripping portrayal of a woman trying to explain an unexplainable thing: her decision not to be a mother to her child.
I found the narrator surprisingly sympathetic, and I really enjoyed the tension between her attempt to be honest to her future child, and her desire to justify her choices. She is sometimes painfully honest with herself, about her flaws and the flaws of the people around her. By the end of the book, the narrator's inexplicable decision makes a good deal more sense, even if I could have wished different choices on her.
Among the highlights of the book are the details of the narrator's Chinese background, and a detailed (and sometimes snarky) portrayal of the peculiarities of her family and friends, none of whom are the kind of family I would wish on anyone.

    Language: English
    Release date: 08-28-14

    Publisher's Summary:
Written by D. L. Keur writing as E. J. Ruek and narrated by an incomparable Kirk Winkler of Pro Media Strategies.
Think "All Creatures Great and Small", but with a plot, some mystery, and maybe a ghost.
Set in a near future "now" and marked by moment-to-moment, life-and-death crises that are a practicing veterinarian's life, meet Warren Jeffreys, D.V.M. Raised white, half Cree, he's gifted with animals, but not very people savvy.
Struggling to survive his first year in private practice, despite the huge chip on his shoulder, college debt, and a plague of bigotry and prejudice, his bad luck and worse judgment lands him broke and homeless, camping out with vagrants and vagabonds. He's cleansing cows and cutting up dead lambs inside bawling ewes-an animal mechanic working for a small-time veterinary service in rural North Idaho.
As his hopes for prestige and preeminence buckle under the rigors of day-to-day practice, he finds a new dream - a reconciliation to home and family-and with it comes a certain peace... until, once again, as fame and fortune tempt, he faces hard choices.
Filled with intense, critical emergencies, all of them based on true cases, the audiobook has been "vetted" by modern, practicing veterinarians. It's the animals that make you really pull for Dr. Warren Jeffreys, because, despite his best attempts not to, he cares. A lot. And, because he cares, because he competes against death, regardless the odds, he makes a difference. Unfortunately, the often cantankerous farm folk he serves don't always appreciate his efforts and skill. Nor do they trust him, the "too tall, long-haired Injun". Warren truly is a man without a home, with a foot in two worlds, but welcome in neither until he learns to trust his own heart.

    Gripping Story Well Narrated
If you could sum up Old Hickory Lane in three words, what would they be?
    Engaging plot, writing.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Old Hickory Lane?
There are many. Every incident of Warren's vet practice leaves you on the edge of your seat. Best spot? Treating the K9 corps at the clinic. Definitely an emergency with a lot at stake.
What about Kirk Winklers performance did you like?
The narrative parts are not just read in monotone, but pitched to the circumstances of the scene.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I can't stay awake that long, but the book certainly holds the listener's attention. I'd already read the book, but quite awhile ago. It was nice to hear the story so well narrated.
    Any additional comments?
You can't help but wish Warren success, but you also want to slap him upside the head to knock the chip off his shoulder. If he was totally likable, I don't think the story would be near as compelling.

Below par after The Crimson Rooms
I read this having read the Crimson Rooms with the same characters.
I felt the narrative was good and helped the story.
This book starts in 1926 with Evelyn Gifford one of the first female solicitors and the interesting cases she takes on. This is set against the historical General Strike. The strike was called in support of the coal miners who were locked out as they refused to accept increased working hours for less wages.
I really loved the Crimson Rooms and felt this was not as good. While it was nice to see what happened to the characters, I felt the story was a bit slow in parts and I felt the character of Nicholas Thorne in particular had became all too wishy washy. It was an easy read but I could not say I would highly recommend it.

    Critic Reviews:
Ljerne og galskaben danser hen over siderne. Man lser med skiftevis et fjoget smil og hyler af grin. Det ene jeblik er vi p vej ned i bukserne p bager-ekspedienten Eva. Det nste fr vi krt grus op i fjset p den lokale speedway-bane eller bevidner kostelige scener i klasselokalet. Hit med de sidste to bind!" (Georg Hilton, Ekstra Bladet)

"O'Flynn writes with brilliant wit and warmth about people cast adrift in contemporary wildernesses, and the resolution between father and son is surprising and satisfying" (The Times)
"The charm of this story of the skill and pathos with which the touching father and son relationship is portrayed. Subtle, clever and thoroughly enjoyable" (Sunday Mirror)
    Members Reviews:
    Pure bliss
I thoroughly enjoyed Catherine O'Flynn's earlier novel, 'What Was Lost' and this book is every bit as good. In this one she writes about the father and son relationship with warmth, humour and a really tender heart. The Spanish ex-pat community where Eamonn the son lives, is made up of an entertaining array of characters, all desperately searching for happiness in a half built, run down Spanish estate surrounded by illegal immigrants and possibly hostile locals. Dermot the father is an unassuming first generation Irish bus driver who has lived in Birmingham during the difficult years in the seventies. Eamonn speaks with a broad Brummie accent, has pretensions of being a novelist and finds it difficult to reconcile with his Irish roots. Both are brought together after Dermots wife has died and Eamonns girlfriend has left him alone in a place he despises. The initial encounter when Dermot decides to take an uninvited holiday with Eamonn is not promising but what ensues is a wonderful story of tragedy, comically compromising situations, intrigue and most of all hope for a better future no matter what has happened in the past.
This book is beautifully read by Joe Simpson. There are a few recording glitches (e.g. paper rustling and hesitancy), but not enough to mar this little gem. It is a shame that this novel seems to exist only on the outer edge of Audibles vast library so I really hope this review encourages you to read this lovely book and also What Was Lost. If you enjoyed The Truth about Sheep and Goats I think you may like this.

Consumed by her pursuit of a Theory of Everything, a brilliant California scientist struggles to deal with life in and outside the lab
Doctor Esme Charbonneau Tallich's passion is cosmology, the science of the origin of the universe; specifically, she is searching for a TOE, or a Theory of Everything. Esme is a feminist maverick, a rogue thinker. Hired as a professor of molecular biology at the University of Greater California, she prefers the "bench science" of organic chemistry at one extreme and "walking out into space" at the other. Her marriage to a TV director and aspiring stand-up comedian is rocky. Esme's five-year-old daughter, Ollie, the sun in her galaxy, seems an enigma. Too readily diagnosed by professionals as "challenged", even possibly autistic, she is, like Esme, a renegade thinker and creative mind. Her use of language is poetic, not deficit driven or conventional.
As her marriage dissolves, Esme's struggle to maintain custody of Ollie and autonomy for herself and her work is set against the backdrop of the beckoning cosmos. Her tantalizing closeness to discovery of a grand unified theory - as psychiatric professionals, lawyers, and Esme's estranged husband also close in on Ollie, seeking to medicate and restructure her - heightens tension while also offering hope. The discovery that Esme seeks is twofold: enlightenment and equilibrium in the troubled universes of her personal and professional lives.
Saving St. Germ is a provocative, dramatic look at a single mother's life at the edge of the universe - and the center of the human heart.

It starts out nice and innocent, then.......
    The Trauma Bunny gets serious.
    VERY SERIOUS.......
    Favorite Series, Hands Down!
I love the Trauma Junkie series! The writing has a very real feel to it and I really connected with all of the characters. I get completely sucked in when I read these books, it feels like it takes me minutes to read them but then when I look at the clock I realize that it's actually been like 4 hours and I've managed to block out all the real life stuff going on around me! I've never put a single one down while reading, I always make sure I have enough time to read the entire thing in one sitting. My only complaint, that's not even a real complaint, is that I think I may have had a small panic attack at the end of #5, I'm pretty sure I was hyperventilating and I can't wait for #6 to be released! Keep up the excellent work Tom, you are definitely one of my favorite authors!
I'm hooked !!! Cant wait for the next one.
Oh my God. Each book is better than the last. I read all 5 books in less than a week. Just carried my Kindle everywhere and read every spare moment. I never expected the cliff hanger ending on this one and I am so eager for # 6. Very believable and the characters are very well drawn. I feel like I know them all. If you like medical fiction , real life drama and some great humor this series should not be missed.
    A cliffhanger?! NOOOO!
Why are you doing this to your fans?! Book 5 of the Trauma Junkie series definitely stands up to its predecessors. As if having a great plot and lovable characters wouldn't keep you coming back for more, Tom Hobbs ends book 5 with a gripping cliffhanger that will ensure sales for his next book. I can only hope that book 6 will be on sale soon. Please hurry, Tom!
    A quick but fun read
(3.7 stars) This author has an easy to read style, and as a paramedic myself, I can really appreciate the main character's attitude (and mouth)...in some ways, he gets away with saying some things that many of us have been tempted to say on many occassions.
