Historical Fiction Worth Your Time

Reading this book was like watching a movie â or being in one. Author Dan Smithâs writing is strong and vivid enough for readers to descend into the dark pages of Karl Friedmannâs life and feel the guilt, anger, hate, and love Karl experiences. That being said, My Brotherâs Secret is a heartfelt piece of historical fiction worth your time.

It is 1941 Germany and Karl is training to join Hitler Youth. His brother, Stefan is opposed to Hitler and keeps a dangerous secret from Karl. On Karlâs twelfth birthday, his life takes a tragic turn and he finds himself struggling to discern what is right and wrong in his divided country. Karl meets Lisa, a feisty neighbor girl who seems to share Stefanâs views, and he is loved by his mother and grandparents. Together, all of them face circumstances that threaten their lives and their loyalty and courage are tested.

There are few books in which I have read from a Germanâs point of view during this terrible time in history. It is easy for one to regard Germans as the âbad guysâ in the war, but there were obviously a vast amount of Germans who opposed Hitlerâs views and actions. It took strong and brave people to stand up to the Nazi Party for the sake of their families, morals, and country. My Brotherâs Secret gives us a glimpse of what many German families and youth faced during this time.

I do recommend this book and I also recommend one to read it for a vacation read or summer read if possible, because I found myself getting cranky when work, sleep, laundry, etc. made me put the book down. My library copy marks it as Juvenile Fiction and while I know each child is different in what he can handle, I will say there is some violence (i.e. bombing, whipping) in the story that makes me personally label this as middle school/young adult literature.

An engaging twist on friendship

I listened to this wonderful children's story today. Narrator Cheri Gardner brings the story to life and her narration kept me engaged in the story line. Young listeners will enjoy the visual images Suzanna Hawkins uses to tell the story of a lonely little boy and his friendship with an native American boy from another era. I recommend the audible book and the print edition to parents of young children. It is an endearing tale to which I believe children will want to listen many times during their childhood.

I really liked this quick tale and recommend it to anyone who could use a good laugh.

Looking forward to book 4 already...

I've just finished reading this 3rd Nicu book with our Amazon Prime membership, and think I'll now have to head straight over to find book 4, just to find out what happens to poor old Felix!

Anyway, enough about the future. As with all the Nicu books I've read, this one is a great package, with useful life lessons painlessly enclosed in the wit and humour of Elias Zapple.

Yes, it is a book about greed, and also about different people (or vampires) learning to peacefully coexist. It is also a book that had me smiling, due to so many great witty little moments and phrases. From books 1 & 2, I have already learned that the Fang Fairy is an important vampire, who is a source of both help and annoyance. I had to laugh when her departure from this book was accompanied by, "Now I'm off to feast at Buckingham Palace before they all wake up."

It is the way that Zapple seamlessly combines the expected with the more unexpected that makes his writing fresh and humorous.

Looking forward to book 4 already...

Nicu the young vampire faces a big fat threat

Greed is NOT good

A vampire who is TOO bloodthirsty? Impossible! Only it isnât. Young Nicu, my favourite ever vampire, has a fat friend. Well, not just fat... Florin has become so heavy that he can hardly fly, and all because heâs greedy for blood. This causes major problems for all the local vampires but especially for Nicu. Poor Nicu, he always gets blamed for everything.

Elias Zapple has cleverly written a story about over consumption which is wildly entertaining while having an important message. Itâs not good when one vampire takes everything for himself, unbalancing the blood feeding eco system, built up over centuries of human / vampire co-existence.

The Fang Fairy makes a welcome return and as does Doctor Hans Smell Singh. As with all the Nicu books this would make a great gift for any child who struggles with reading. Itâs impossible to resist the zany world created by Elias Zapple!

Hilarious

Poor little Nicu always seems to get the short end of the stick. This is another hilarious book by Elias Zapple. I highly recommend getting all the books in the Nicu series.

Great Tool for Teaching!

Nicu - The Littlest Vampire: In 'Blood, Blood Everywhere' is the first book Iâve read in Elias Zappleâs Nicu series, but it reads well even without having read the first two books. Even though the reading level is beyond my kindergartnersâ range, they thoroughly enjoyed the excerpts I read to them and loved the illustrations.

The next day, Hare takes the cows, goes into the field, cuts their tails off, and sticks the tails into the mud so that it looks like the tails are sticking up out of the mud. Hare then hides the cows in the woods. Hare runs down to Hyena saying the cows have fallen into the mud and that he is not strong enough to pull them out. Hyena to the rescue, but every time, Hyena pulls on a tail he ends up with it in his hand and Hare cries out, "Oh no, you pulled off its tail!" This happens 10 times. They decide that since there are no cows left, they have no reason to keep the farm together, so Hyena takes off. Hare calls the cows and has plenty of milk from then on.

Charming tales

Plucky heroine Rye O'Chanter returns with her friends to foil villainous plots, uncover mysteries, and save the day. It's a terrific series for kids of ALL ages! Funny and wise.

For Any Age, not just for kids

It may be geared toward the younger set, but as a 68 year old grandma, I really did enjoy this book..It took me away from the WWII era books I have been soaking in this summer and gave me a change from the usual Romance ( i know where this is going) books that i read for fun.. I enjoyed Rye immensely and especially loved all the colorful characters in this book..If you are looking for something different, this is it! Medieval Times, ghostly alleys, weird characters, secrets and Bog Noblins...what more can you ask for to pass the time...Have to read book two now.

Has all the very best ingredients for a truly great story

Wonderful. Well written, exciting, and just plain fun to read. Great characters, with fantastical names but human hearts, both good and evil. Adventure on every page, with a young heroine who is not afraid to fight for what she believes in. Her friends and family are similarly brave, true and resourceful in the face of great challenges.

All the very best ingredients for a truly great story.

Fantastic book

This is a great book. My kids and I read the first in the series and loved it. This one, they couldn't wait till storytime. They were ready and waiting on me. And impatient - if allowed would want to read the entire book in one sitting. I would highly recommend this book...adventure, great characters, great plot. My kids' description....awesome. We are currently reading the third in the series.

Book 2 takes things a bit further in the story of our main characters, and also a bit back---as in, we get to learn some of their past history.
