Deductive Reasoning

I purchased this item in conjunction with a unit on deductive reasoning in an eighth grade classroom. The students were able to use the clues and solve the murder.

Conflicting Economic Interests

The Adventure of the Speckled Band, Goodwin

This is the "Graphic Novel Adventures of Sherlock Holmes", similar to the old "Classics Comics" from around 1950. Vincent Goodwin wrote this adaptation, Ben Dunn is the illustrator (p.48). These "Sherlock Holmes" stories were written over a century ago. They used to be part of High School English courses. How many other novels from that era are still popular? Doyle followed crime news, his stories were based on true crimes that were adapted for these short stories. The drawings of these people make them appear much younger characters compared to the books. Your Public Library has the full uncensored story in "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes".

Yes - it is gripping and takes you to another world

Who was your favorite character and why?

All the characters are well delineated and it is very authentically of its time.

The narrator reads skilfully. if you like Agatha Christie or Margery Allingham you will very much enjoy these and I have enjoyed them more than the Ngaio Marsh series - Miss Silver and Patricia Wentworth deserve to be very much better known.

Old fashioned but still good mystery

Would you consider the audio edition of Grey Mask to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the printed version so can't say.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Grey Mask?

None in particular, although the ending was good.

What about Diana Bishops performance did you like?

I thought she was perfect as the narrator. Her style and delivery is very good and evocative of the period.

No, I enjoyed the whole thing.

This is the first Patricia Wentworth I have listened to and I will be listening to more especially if Diana Bishop is the narrator. They are stories for fans of old fashioned detective stories. Absolutely first rate.

Ripping yarn. Great fun.

A 1920s detective novel in the best style of the genre. Simply too thrilling for words.

Rather more penetrating than I had expected.

Daft plot, but interesting characters portrayed with more insight than many books of this genre. I will read more Patricia Wentworth.

Good story, shame about Margot

Great story, especially if you like cosy period murders with a twinkly little lady that's sharp as a tack. One for the Agatha Christie fans.

Just a shame that one of the central characters Margot Standing who's life is in peril is so annoying both how she is written and narrated. I'm ashamed to say at times I was hoping would get bumped off!

Narrator doesn't have a massive range in terms of voices, but generally a pleasing tone.

Love the premise but....

Yes I keep buying these. Tip to other listers struggling with this narrator: speed up her voice to 1.25 or 1.5.

Author: inexperienced, makes up facts. Why is a Scottish guy complaining about adjusting to cold weather??? The climate of Scotland is much colder, much more dreary than Illinois . Do some basic research, Terri.

Spoiler alert:

A lot of other inconsistencies that reveal how young/naive the writer is. No way in hell any mother would be able to pass on to the other side without knowing their child is ok. The fact that the unborn child was never something Jeanine brought up in all of these books really takes away from the believability of the story. The number one priority of a mother would be the baby. Where is my baby? Find my baby.

The author needs to do a lot more research about what she doesn't know such as labor, motherhood, military, police work instead of making up stuff.

Mary is a virgin....what??? With all of her accomplishments, she would have to be late twenties early thirties, but this is orderliness fantasy tale writing Mary as early twenties being a former Chicago cop. Come on.

The male dialogue....just no. No man would have say half this crap. The actions and activity are spot on but the dialogue is more like a children's cartoon. The author needs more life experience to write better characters.

A Heroine deserving of Respect

What made the experience of listening to Darkness Exposed the most enjoyable?

The entire Mary O'Reilly paranormal mystery series is well worth listening to. Figuring out the villain and their twisted motivations is delicious, while the heroes and heroines are all people you would want to know. In today's day and age, it is so refreshing to hear stories without a lot of gratuitous sex, vulgarity, and unnecessary violence that are STILL supremely entertaining.

Which scene was your favorite?

Cannot tell you my favorite scene without serious spoilers, but it is toward the climax of the story and I imagine it will be MOST PEOPLE'S favorite "Y...E...S..!!!" Moment.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The moving parts are always when apologies are made and forgiveness extended, because all of the main characters are people you would LOVE TO KNOW.

Another good Miss Silver listen

I have now purchased several of these 'cosy' crime stories and have read many of Wentworth's books. The wordy style is unmistakeable and you either love it or hate it. I do find the narrator just a bit deliberate sometimes but she is, I think, trying to reflect the tone of the books faithfully. Well worth a try if you like a classic crime story.

Wonderful story...marvellous narration. I'm a total addict of Patricia Wentworth's books, tales from a bygone era; exciting and compelling. Pure escapism.

The opening scene where Candida is rescued - this sets the tone nicely and introduces us to two of the main characters years before the murder story begins.

When I first read this book many years ago I found it to be pleasantly thrilling and creepy - there's nothing like cobwebbed cellars to enhance a crime novel!

Wonderful Series

I loved it. What a perfect ending! I can't wait to see what happens next!

Disappointed,only ending character storylines

What would have made Classified better?

Had the opportunity to do something with several storylines, but weren't developed. Started, ending quickly on to wrapping up characters. This book tells me this series is over...everyone had a happy ending. Blah blah blah, boring!

Would you ever listen to anything by Fern Michaels again?

Not sure, loved the Sisterhood series but the last one wasn't that good either. Seems Michaels has lost her edge. Guess she will stick to her romance novels which aren't for me.

What didnt you like about Natalie Rosss performance?

Ok but hard to hear much of the time, even with my volume turned up to the max.

Light story - no romance

I liked the setting - the dark side of Hollywood life. The descriptions of the way Meg survives without money - or a home - is fun, but a bit slow. The story is light, but it isn't a comedy. It has a few surprises at the end, which I did not see coming. It is not the great American novel, but I enjoyed it. The performer did a good job.

Completely Unrealistic

The story is so unrealistic and it is not written in a way that makes you overlook that fact. So the main character, a famous actress, chooses to live in her car out of pride instead of staying with one of her many rich and famous friends? And some how her acting on a mystery series in the 60's or 70's has prepared her to be a detective and take on the Russian Mafia alone, its just ridiculous. The narrator did well with what she was given, but what she was given was horrible.

Superb Suspense

Walking back to his isolated vacation cabin, Ben Selby finds the body of a murdered man. The police wonder if Selby was the intended target. When he awakes in the middle of the night in his lonely cabin, he realizes that the victim was a man he knew as Peter Gaston when twenty years before they both worked for a shadowy quasi-military organization known only as the Establishment. Selby begins to wonder. Contacted by Gaston's widow, he learns Gaston was trying to reach him because Gaston needed his help to recover something valuable from their Establishment days. The widow is willing to give Selby a letter left by her husband. She has only one demand. "This man, she said. This man who killed Peter. I want him killed." Suspenseful and full of surprises, this is a book to keep you wondering and reading. The author was not notable for creating happy endings.The end of this book is especially poignant, because it is Mr. Hubbard's last book.
