The shadow is one of the best radio shows ever made. Orson Welles,Bill Johnstone, and Bret Morison all do great jobs as the Shadow. Agnes Moorhead of Bewitched plays the Shadows partner during Welles time as the Shadow. Classic radio at its best.

If you love the old serials this is for you.

Once again another collection of the old Shadow serials. The stories and characters aren't the greates, but OrsonWelles is so good as the Shadow, who really cares? These are a great look back at a different time and place. I used to own most of these on casette at one time and it is nice to have them in a digital format. If you love the Shadow you will love this one for certain.

stories are simple, sound issues

the major issue I have is that the music is much louder than the speaking parts. there isn't much length to each episode, so the stories are rather simple. the commercials between episodes are interesting to hear.

The book is very funny and the narration by John Keating is so pitch perfect it feels like it is being read by the author who happens to be a gifted Irish actor. Humor never had it so good.

pretty good

pretty good book. not my absolute favorite but defiantly not a bad read if I'm being honest. it was much more adult in nature than any other Eoin Colfer book I've read tho just a warning

What would have made Screwed better?

Don't say the F!@# word so much. Really must it be said five times in as many minutes/seconds? I understand trying to appeal to an adult audience but this is overkill. I wish I could trade it back in for another book. Even if I only got half value on the trade in. I used to be able to recommend Eoin Colfer unilaterally. Not any more! Very disappointed.

If it was book I would have drop kicked it into the fire place.

Anything but this series. Unless he has another as adult and vile as these. If you like the rest of his books YOU WILL NOT LIKE THIS ONE! I realize that all caps means yelling, my wife told me to calm down when I told her about it.

His depictions were well done, no real favorite. Probably the doctor.

I must say John Keating is THE redeeming virtue of the performance. John Keating's was phenomenal, he nailed the accents. It was great! His depictions of flashbacks matched that of many vets I've spoken with.

Who-Done-It Puzzler

This is another of Sherlock Holmes' excellent adventures. His use of observation and Spock-like logic are fascinating and presents a challenge to try and beat him to the solution. Brother Mycroft is a welcome visitor in this story as he does not often visit his brother Sherlock, an event so rare causing Holmes to remark 'A planet might as well leave its orbit.' Dr. Watson is, again, an excellent narrator laying out the events and subsequent dialogue in an orderly and entertaining fashion. I highly recommend this puzzling who-done-it.

Trains rides can be deadly!

When brilliant brother Mycroft needs Sherlock to find the missing plans that are vital to the nation, and solve the tragedy of young West's death, it came at a perfect time to get our hero out of a fog-encrusted funk and send him and Watson on a great adventure to see whether or not the conspiracy involved top men in the government. Leave it to Sherlock enjoy every moment of the search. His enthusiasm for mystery feeds anyone's craving for a good story.

It's Sherlock, what else needs to be said. If you like Sherlock you'll like it, if you don't you probably won't. I liked it.

Good Book

Never having read this book before, I was unsure of what to expect. I found that this is quite a captivating book that leave the reader not wanting to put it down. Would recommend for someone who has a bit of time to kill...you won't want to put this down!

very good book and series. loved it.

Du Pre Wisens

I have read the Du Pre series in order and the characters have become richer and wiser through time. Notches read like a true mystery with a climax and a resolution but with a beautiful character development of Madeleine. I did feel let down by Wolf, No Wolf because the new characters were shallow, but I really cared for the "good guys" in this story. Du Pre lives by the code that good should prevail. Thank goodness.

This gripping, well written story really hit home with me because it rang true as far as missing young girls, etc. Couldn't put it down!

Big Fan of MJ Trow

I read every Lestrade novel I can get my hands on. I discovered the books in a library in Virginia and have found each novel to be witty and well thought out. Mr. Trow is historian and a true student of the world and cultures around him.

Yes, his Lestrade is not the same kind of Lestrade written by Doyle, but this Lestrade is much more believable and readable than Doyle's Holmes ever was.

There are plenty of books out there that canonize and worship Doyle's detective, but only Trow has truly tweaked his nose (or rather, cut the tip off it) and presented the reader with a truly delightful counter, anti-hero like Lestrade.

For Holmes-haters

I suspect that the audience for M.J. Trow's series of mysteries featuring Sherlock Holmes's sometime-collaborator Sholto Lestrade of Scotland Yard is the sort of kid who was too superior, too literary, in high-school to enjoy Conan Doyle's tales, and who relishes having a support group now to affirm how silly they were. The sad thing is that a potentially interesting plot is lurking in here somewhere, but buried as it is in snide sniping and smug self-satisfied smirking ... who cares?

Doyle's Lestrade is somewhat dull. Trow's is a bumbling incompetent who puts Nigel Bruce's Watson to shame. Both bumbling _and_ incompetent. Bumbling: on p. 14, ".. the inspector somersaulted gracefully over the top step and caught himself a sharp one on the .. knocker." Incompetent/stupid: on p. 13, when his superior tells him that the victim's "favorite reading, apart from Private Member's Bills, was the Marquis de Sade", poor Lestrade can only wonder (after sensing a joke re 'private members') "was there a French connection?"

Some may find Trow "full of humor" ... perhaps, of a rather poofty, sniggery 5th grade sort. See above ('private members', hnyuck hnyuck), or on pp. 19-20, "They practised every vice known to men. Not to mention women?" "Women?" "Please, I asked you not to mention women."

The humor is insufferably cute and twee, not so much witty as half-witted and anachronistic: p. 23, "... outside the mellow, yellow entrance porch." Now does 'mellow' really apply to a porch? Under some circumstances, I guess, but there is nothing to indicate that this particular porch is 'mellow' -- clearly, just a chance to refer to the Donovan lyric. Yuck, yuck, shnort. There are also lots of quaint references to Doyle, e.g. further down p. 23, "... shown into the study. It was scarlet ..." Get it? "Study in Scarlet"? Yuck, yuck, shnort, gasp.
