    Science or Religion?
This book is a sci-fi novel with the theme of religion versus science. Science is represented by the planetary explorers of Mars, who are studying the planet after discovery of 60 million year old human-like life. A group of earthly religious fundamentalists has become so politically powerful that it can determine the outcome of elections. New Morality leadership sees the archeological work being done on Mars as a threat to its core religious beliefs--it wants the project shut down. I believe it's obvious that Bova sees the religious movement as a fanatic fringe; he even states that when religious movements become too powerful, conflict results. Lots of conflict in the book, but the resolution seems like an afterthought. The book just sort of ends, leaving the reader to wonder what the result might be...the epilogue gives a clue. I liked the book. It was exciting--makes one think.
Start At The Beginning Of This Series
Based on this installment in the Mars series, Ben Bova does not do back story very well. If you start here, you will probably find the characters to be paper thin and the story much to do about nothing. If you have the background of the first two stories, it hangs together fairly well.
Still, I was disappointed in this installment of the series. I really enjoyed the first two installments of this series which I have on audio tape and would give them 4.5 to 5 stars. Bova did an excellent job in the first two of creating suspenseful tales about the exploration of Mars, and I listened to them several times. This book seems more a polemic on fundamental Christianity than on the exploration of the solar system. Bova's caricature of Christian belief is over the top. As one of the majority of Christians who do not find conflict between faith and science, I thought his continuing tirade on faith versus science heavy handed and unconvincing (at one point he portrays a young high school student's persecution at the hands of the faithful for wanting to learn about Mars. He stopped just short of portraying Christians drowning kittens.) He did a much better job of finding some balance to the subject in his novel Jupiter (which I heartily recommend). If you have read/listened to the first two, go ahead and pick this one up to see how the saga ends (although you may want to wait for an Audible special). If you haven't read the first two installments, I think you will be disappointed if you start here.
By far the worst of this trilogy!
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Being I was in the car and a captive audience, yes.

    Entertaining ear candy
I've listened to all the Chase Kolpath/Alex Benedict novels. I like the point of view and the character buildout. The narrator has offbeat intonation, but the wry humor of the character comes through well. Not a deep mindbender, but a fun mystery romp with unlikely heroes.
    Entertaining.
Kind of like a Magnum PI episode: not incredibly deep but entertaining...
    Hummmm
It takes about an hour into the book before all of the pieces come together but Jack McDevitt sure knows how to write a gripping story
    The reading performance is perfect
Every book usually has a boring moment during which you just skim.
I am yet to find one in this series.
There are very few books that I am willing to listen to over and over again. Jennifer van Dyck's reading has made this series so immersive that I feel like I am living in that time period. I can even relate to the background characters. Now I actively seek out titles where she is a reader.
I wish there were more than 6 titles in the series.
At some point in the story everything starts to get a little predictable. I guess this is because I have read so many sci fi titles but, I still rate the story high.
If you are looking for a title (or a series for that matter) that will engage you for a few days, this series is perfect.
    Sherlock Holmes meets Indiana Jones
McDevitt creates an enjoyable futuristic environment with likeable characters and an interesting and compelling plot.

    Superb!
What made the experience of listening to Valentine Pontifex the most enjoyable?
When I saw there were multiple narrators I was concerned. Well, those concerns quickly went away when I realized why they went with multiple readers. Each chapter focuses on a different part of the story and/or character. Having a different reader for each character or character types was brilliant!
Who was your favorite character and why?
They were all so good and well done I can't chose a favorite.
What about the narratorss performance did you like?
All four narrators did an outstanding job.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes but couldn't.
    Any additional comments?
This is among the best audiobooks I have listened to. The story and narrators made for a wonderful experience journeying to this world of Majipoor.
twists and turns to the very end
The final part, just as thrilling as the rest. An excellent and intriguing plot and a leader in Valentine that could make us all think. there could be a better way, I'm sad to reach the end of the series .

    Critic Reviews:
"Ably slinging the technobabble to explain the odd wonder-gadgets in his tales, and greasing them with plenty of 'oh-baby' sex, Mosley creates sf in which Shaft and Superfly would feel at home. Can ya dig it?" (Booklist)

Masterful SciFi from a master of mystery
I've been out of Science Fiction for many years, but an Easy Rawlins fan for many years since then. Thought I'd give this a try. After the first few stories, I was tempted to abandon the book: too dark and dystopian. But I stuck with it, and so should you. Mosley, like all good SciFi authors, creates a unique and real world. In this case, a rather frightening one, but intriguing. His mind/machine/spirit concept is uplifting, for lack of a better word. His characters are real and compelling, as you would expect from the man who created Easy and his corner of the world. Readers who stay to the end will be rewarded by the return of earlier characters, an increasingly fuller explanation of the world, and the possibility of redemption. This book is well worth your time. I hope Mosley brings back some of the people that he created here.
Solid sci-fi with a Black theme
Mosley does for dystopic Sci-Fi what he did for period mystery novels: give it the Black American perspective lacking in most of the genre. The nine stories interweave into an entertaining, patchwork novel of sorts. I liked the more or less happy endings in many of the stories.
The reader does a fine job, too.
    Excellent story
I really enjoyed this story, which is a set of 9 short stories set in the same universe. The characters have real emotions and common motivations that drive the stories in a futuristic setting where the lines of personal identity and human rights get blurred. This story is similar to William Gibson's Neuromancer or Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash as it often deals with the underside of humanity, the people living on the fringe, trying to make their way in a technologically disadvantaged setting.

    Nice to hear the author
I was interested in hearing how Connie Willis is narrating her own stories. Since it wasn't expensive I gave it a try.
First, she is no professional narrator. This said, she does a real nice job reading her stories.
I'm a fan of her long, elaborate novels, but I enjoyed the short stories very much. They bring new ideas and theories and are mostly funny.

Wyrms is an Orson Scott Card classic, one of the novels that helped forge his young career.
    Critic Reviews:
"Another outstanding science fiction novel from the prize-winning author of Ender's Game....This is a fast-moving, absorbing story." (School Library Journal)
"A wonderful, textured fable." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
Card fans, don't miss this one!
Wyrms is among the best and among the most obscure science fiction. Overshadowed by the "softer" (yet still brilliant) Ender's Game, in my opinion Wyrms really shows what Card is capable of when it comes to SF. This book is a perfect balance of soft and hard, with both the social and scientific issues of a colonized planet explored in Card's usual lyrical, dark manner.
As usual for OSC, the plot is tight and fast-paced, the writing is gorgeously spare, and the characters are unforgettable. From the royal court of Heptem to the caves of Cranning, you will never forget this book once you've read it - or listened to it, as the case may be. This book has had a permanent place on my shelf for many years, and I was thrilled to see that it's finally been released as an audio book. It will have a permanent place in my audio library as well, along with Card's other masterworks.
With her performance of Wyrms, Emily Card firmly establishes herself as a true equal to the other brilliant narrators Card audio fans know and love: Stefan Rudnicki, Gabrielle DeCuir, and Scott Brick. Ms. Card's reading and character voices are spot on and a delight to listen to.
Even if you've never read or listened to an OSC book before, but are a fan of science fiction, do yourself a huge favor and spend the credit or the cash on this somewhat obscure title. You will not regret it.
    Inventive SciFi With Religious Overtones
I have not read a lot of OSC, but after this book I will definitely be reading more. Fans of the Dune series will love the beginning for its political intrigues. Fans of Tolkien will love the middle for the mingling of different humanoid species. Fans of Pullman will love the ending for its religious implications.
Without giving away too much, OSC has done an excellent job of imagining totally new theories of evolution, life, and racial memory. The characters are well-developed and continue to change throughout the novel in suprising ways. There is a good balance of "hard" SciFi and "soft" philosophy.
Emily Card does an excellent job at narration. I was skeptical, knowing that family may have trumped talent, but not so -- Emily does as good a job as any narrator I have heard. Her voices are interesting and varied, with accents appropriate to the characters.
This book would make an excellent movie (hint hint to Hollywood!).

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I loved this whole story, whenever I have a question about life, I just ask myself, What would Jettero Heller do?
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Invaders Plan?
There were so many, and it is the best science fiction series I have ever read, or listened to! But to be fair, the innocence of the main hero Jettero.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The scene with Jettero, getting in a fight in the bar, while Sultan makes fun of what he calls Jettero's stupidity and bravery.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Mission Earth of Coarse! Why fool with perfection.
    Any additional comments?
Love the whole series, and the deep meanings having to do with our so called culture.
Rate the Book, Not the Author's Personal Beliefs
As with most of L Ron's Science Fiction, this one is amusing. The "science" is about as "real" as that found in Buck Rogers, but the story and characters are fun.
Don't let any preconceptions about outside issues prevent you from enjoying this satiric romp - that goes for the entire Mission Earth series, not just this one book.
An Amazing Suck You In Book To This Series
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I recommend this to people that love Science Fiction and for those that have not tried Science Fiction.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Some parts were very funny and the narrators did well.

    Publisher's Summary:
Susan Galina and her friend Pat have escaped their normal lives into the elegant, isolated world of the Odyssey, a luxury cruise ship heading from New York to Europe via Bermuda. Pat is working on her doctoral thesis in quantum physics, and Susan is recovering from a recent and unhappy divorce.
To Susan's delight, she discovers that her favorite author, Max Merriwell, is also aboard ship, teaching a writers' workshop. Susan's life becomes even more interesting when she meets Tom Clayton, the handsome chief of security. This cruise looks very promising indeed. But the pleasant shipboard vacation turns dark as the Odyssey passes into the Bermuda Triangle.
Each year, Max Merriwell writes three novels, a science-fiction novel under his own name, a fantasy novel under the pseudonym Mary Maxwell, and a mystery novel under the pseudonym Weldon Merrimax. The trouble begins when Max receives a threatening note that appears to come from Weldon Merrimax, Max's own pseudonym. Susan hears wolves howling in the night, the ship's passengers are seized with a dancing mania, and monsters lurk in the ship's corridors. An eyewitness reports a murder, but the victim of the crime is not on the passenger list and the body is nowhere to be found. While others struggle to understand these strange events, Pat seeks the explanation in quantum theory.
Out of these elements, Murphy builds a suspenseful, funny, fast-paced novel of shifting and intersecting realities that is a joy to read.

Strap yourself in for the ride of your life!
This was a terrific book, one of the best I've heard at Audible thus far. Imagine a cruise ship where a famous author's characters take on a life of their own. I highly recommend this not only for a great read, but the narrator was perfect as well.
    Loved it!
Schrodinger's cat, quantum physics, the Bermuda Triangle...I was looking for a light listen after the holidays and was delighted with "Adventures.." This was an impulse buy of a new author for me, and was just what I was after...light, a bit whimsical, with a blend of 'possibilities' that I thoroughly enjoyed!
    Very bizarre, very entertaining
If you like quirky plotlines, this is for you. If you like writers like Jasper Fforde, you will appreciate this book. At times it is a bit hard to follow due to the quirkiness, but always enjoyable. A good read!
A joy from beginning to endnote!
"Adventures in Time and Space..." is a frolic not to be missed. I knew nothing about this book, but was in a mood for something light and whimsical so I took a gamble on a "stranger." I am so glad I did. Fans of Jasper Fforde will enjoy "Adventures...", so will those who loved Alice's Adventures, mystery lovers and anyone who ever pondered Schrodinger's cat. It defies classification by genre.

    Contact is wonderful
Contact is a great read and a great listen. In typical Sagan fashion, the book not only entertains, it challenges and educates. Jodie Foster does an excellent job reading the book so much so that is it easy to get lost listening to it. My only complaint? I wish there was an unabridged version available.
Well narrated but feel like I have missed alot
I thought this narration was very well done. Jody Foster, I thought, brought out just the right amount of wonder to make this believable.
However, the book being abridged I feel like I have missed out on a lot. I thought the book went too fast. I have listened to just the beginning and read an excerpt of the beginning on a book site and I noticed that so many little things were cut out.
In this day and age with digital downloads of books that can last over 24 hours I wonder why there still are abridged audio books. I feel a little robbed when I see that one book can be 3 hours abridged and 15 hours unabridged. What wonderful things have I been missing from the book? I would want to listen to a unabridged version of this book.
    So glad I got this
Abridged versions are offensive, but I am so glad I decided to give this one a go because of the reviews. This is more believable than the movie and made me eager to read the full print version. How sad it is that we have lost Sagan. Jodie Foster is as good reading this as she was in the movie. All in all an excellent experience. Do yourself a favour and get Contact - you'll be glad you did too. If you haven't already, checkout the Wikipedia entry for Contact for some of the issues Sagan raises - also a good read.
As expected... far better than the movie
I fully expected this book to be excellent with Jodi Foster reading, and I was not disappointed. Her oration was excellent and matched the quality of Sagan's imagination.
The story is fantastically creative, technical, and detailed, yet remains within the realm of possibilities.
A great story, a great Jodi Foster
About 10 years ago I bought Carl Sagan's novel as a German translation (I'm Swiss). The German edition was somewhat boring - the translator probably didn't like the story at all. But when I saw that Jodi Foster reads this book I gave it another try - and now I'm convinced that it's one of the best science fiction novels ever written and read fantastically by Jodi Foster. Too bad that it's just an abriged version. But nevertheless: Not to miss!

    I really don't like abridged.
    Any additional comments?
abridged chopped up a story that could have been entertaining and left me wanting. I like both authors and have enjoyed most of their books. This was a disappointment.
    Who abridged this book?
What disappointed you about Generation Warriors?
The best parts of this book have been abridged out. I am not sure who decides what is worth being left out but all the parts of this book that made it funny and engaging were left out.
Has Generation Warriors turned you off from other books in this genre?
No because I read this genre all of the time. I won't listen to an abridged book again.
    Good for a continuing story.
This was a good continuation for the Dinosaur planet survivors. If you have not read the series, this book will confuse the heck out of you. This story does not stand alone. It is like a chapter of a continuing story. And this would be chapter 6 or 7. If however, you have read all the previous books, (which audible does not have) you will like the story. There is no description of the main characters in this installment. The total story (all the chapters, is quiet well written. It is only hard to follow if you do not have all the books or the proper order for them.
Read it yourself if you can. The performer is rather bland and does not contribute much to the story.
    good story. Audio not quality
I enjoyed the story and cringed at only having the abridged version available. The audio quality was lower than I'm accustomed to with audio books with the audio sounding like it was filtered by cotton.
TOO much omitted/DON'T WASTE your time/money, READ
In abbreviating this final volume of the Planet Pirates saga a major disservice has been dealt to the author. Much story detail and explanation has been omitted, leaving big gaps that otherwise would have enhanced the overall story. The lost details of Ford's and Dupaynil's journeys in search of connections for the court trial are adventures in their own right, building a strong foundation for the fight against the Planet Pirates. The lost details of Sassenack's and Lunzie's journeys further reduce the overall impact of this conclusion to the series. In addition to the butchery done to abbreviate the audiobook there is also the irritation factor of the narrator's mispronunciation of frequently used words and names. Frankly, if an unabbreviated version cannot be had, you will get much more out of READING the BOOK.
