New Perspectives, Writer Solves Everything.

I am a love it or leave it kind of person. I don't have time to waste on a mediocre book. This book does not disappoint. It is just as well written as all the other books by Jerry Pournelle that i have read. As I listened to the book I kept thinking of problems the characters would have to overcome. Sometimes those problems are overlooked by writers to make the book flow. Not only did every issue I thought of as an obstacle get addressed, but done so in a believable way. I am particularly impressed with how engrossed I was by the story, as told by the natives, so quickly. All the other books in the CoDominium universe that I have read were from the Imperial view. When I looked at the audio book for the first time I didn't think I would enjoy it as much, since the book is told from the local's viewpoint. The opposite could not have been truer. I really enjoyed getting this perspective and seeing arrogance and superiority where I had not previously thought about it. Great new depth on the CoDominium verse for me.

Delightfully entertaining.

My family loved it. Now my family wants me to see if there is a second book!

what if you lived on a planet without rockets

Prince samuel's world did not have radios or rockets, but their next planet had even less. This is great Pournelle at his best.

Not a lot of science in this science fiction work

Where does King David's Spaceship rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Not the worst, yet not the best. Probably the middle of the pack.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The storyline was fine. It just could've used more techy stuff interjected into the story line. Also, I might've expanded on the ending. But, I can't say more without spoiling it for others.

What about Rob Deans performance did you like?

Fine. He sure has a gravelly voice compared to some other readers I've listened to.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not really and no. But, very few books make me have those kinds of reactions.

I've seen different references that this takes place either chronologically before, or parallel with Mote in God's Eye, so I decided to read this one first, and am now working on Mote. What will be interesting to see is if there is more back story in Mote, which was sorely lacking in KDS

Great self-contained story

Possibly not right away, but definitely in time. It is a perfect example of well written and performed science fiction.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Malcom Dougal- he has such a clear sense of noble purpose, yet is willing to do anything to see his goal realised.

Gap Cycle #4 raises the stakes

This one starts slowly as theMachiavellian schemes of Holt Fasner and Warden Dios are flushed out in great detail. However, when the storyfinally transitions back to the main characters aboard the ship Trumpet things really pick up speed. Fasner and Dios are locked in a battle of plots and schemes that puts the very government of Earth, and their own lives, in great peril. With a new bill being proposed that would move the UMCP (the human police) out from under Holt Fasner and over tothe government itself, Fasner is willing to go to any length to stop such an action, including terrorist actions against thegovernment. At the same time, the two of them are also manipulating events as they relate to Trumpetwho is on the run from the Amnioni with multiple other shipsin pursuit.

As is par for the course in this series, the three main protagonists are at each other's throatsand vying for control of Trumpet while they run from the Amnioni and their other pursuers. They eventually head to an asteroid swarm that houses an illegal lab where they willattempt to unlock the formula behind the mutagen immunity drug that Dios and Fasner have kept secret for years. This might give them a weapon they can use to get back atthe men behind the scenes that are makingtheir lives miserable, but it is also the reason that theAmnioni will riskanything to stop them, including an overall war with humanity. The mutagens are the Amnioni's best weapon and an immunity drug could allowhumanity to essentially wipethem out of existence.

Many lesser characters are flushed out in greater detail as the cast of impactful characters grows immensely and it all makes for a tense story that builds to a giant crescendo of a confrontation. Stephen R. Donaldson once again tells a very compelling story while his characters remainsubjected to unending amounts of suffering and mental abuse. This series is extremely dark and gritty but it is well written and I am glad I finally gave it a try after ignoring it for so many years.

Scott Brick delivers another excellent performance and with one book left in the series I am totally hooked. At this point, I must know how it all plays out.

I love this entire series.

Great Story, Bad Audio Edits

I love the RCN series. Can't get enough. However in this story, the audio edits seemed extreme in amounts and audio difference. It kept taking me out of the story. My be best if read.

The first novella, Washoe Moon, was reminiscent of Tales of the Crypt. The second two, Dorian and Symbiotic, were more like episodes of The Twilight Zone or Outer Limits. These two were much more original, and much more interesting. The stories were well narrated. I look forward to the next Trilogy..

Disappointing

The premise was good but the execution failed. For a profound event like nuclear war, there needs to be something more than a few flickers on the horizon and a very detailed description of how high the smoke would rise. There was no buildup of suspense, nothing to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Too many unnecessary descriptions of the history of the ships involved interspersed with very dry readings of future encyclopedia entries turned what should have been an exciting narrative into a cure for insomnia.

The narrator was not the best though I think with practice he might be. He did seem to do better as the story progressed.

Character development was poor. There was background information on the characters but not enough depth on how they felt. It was almost as if they heard about the war and went "meh".

I won't be reading subsequent books. There just wasn't any excitement to the story.

Dead Space

THIS IS THE JOB

This is a dystopian society. The universe is run by corporations. The corporations race to different planet systems and strip them of all their useable resources. The corporations war with each other. Most people barely survive. Everyone is required to get an education, but are required to pay for it. Coming out of high school they have huge debts, they owe to the corporation that owns their planet. It is a system similar to the old mining towns where you owed your sole to the company store. The corporations decides upon your graduation what job you qualify for, limiting your chance to pay them back. A last ditch option is to go into the military which pays a little better. While this is an old theme, it is one I enjoy reading about.

THERE ONLY TWO KINDS OF PEOPLE, THOSE BEHIND THE GUN AND THOSE IN FRONT OF THE GUN.

I already gave you the first half hour, after that it is purely military fire fights. Fighting for a company you hate, but THIS IS THE JOB. By the looks of the cover, I thought there would be a lot of tech type weapons and body armor. There is some, but it is mostly fight scenes. I lost interest.

Kafer is a top notch narrator and perfect for this type of book.

Interesting mix of dystopian future and Mil sci-fi

In a universe where everyone is ruled by corporate oligarchies, who charge you for mandatory education and then slot your job afterward to fit the corporations needs, there aren't too many choices to avoid a life of drudgery and debt.One of the few choices outside the job slotting are the Reapers, the Salvage Marines. These combination salvage crew/soldiers go where the corporations sends them, salvaging wrecks, fighting off squatters on corporate property, and fighting off the aggression of other corporate entities. This is the life Samual Hyst finds himself in. He took the job to be able to provide for his wife and young son. The pay is excellent, allowing him to pay off his childs life debt, and work on paying off his own and his wifes. The job is ridiculously dangerous, and the Salvage Marines, while well trained, are given surplus weapons and armor, so they are not considered frontline troops. They have to take on any mission though, so they do, and they grow into family as any good military unit does. The characters are very well drawn out, and I became emotionally attached in what happened to them. The settings are extremely varied, from their homeworld to various ships to a variety of planets. The pacing is fast, with no lags in the actions, and the dialogue is crisp. Anyone who likes Mil SCi Fi should enjoy this series.

I got Overdraft while on sale solely because it was on sale. To my surprise I thoroughly enjoyed it.

What other book might you compare Overdraft to and why?

What does Luke Daniels bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Overdraft is unusual in futuristic space sci fi in that it has a some genuinely funny parts but it is not a comedy. I would compare it to Firefly.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not a thing. There are great narrators who cannot pull off female voices. Luke Daniels does not have that problem.

i took a chance and really enjoyed this space adventure!the narrator is really excellent,it is like watching a good animation sci-fi movie.the story keeps surprising us with new aliens.its got space stations, armored soldiers bodyguards protecting the exploring trader,it remind me a bit of star trek too,very good book!

Hard to get into

Too whiny at first so hard to get into might be better if mc was more willing to change on own

this story tries too much too fast. it takes a plot that should be about 2 or 3 books and crams it into one. while i can enjoy fast paced novels l, that is not what this is even if it tries to be. needs a rerlwrite.

Fun continuation of Mars, but has Editing Issues

Middle of the pack. It was a fun continuation of the first book, Mars, but it ends kind of abruptly and there are some serious quality issues with the presentation. Any editing that was done is so painfully obvious.

Mars, the original book in this trilogy.

Very good.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

The story was captivating and kept you wanting to listen but it started to get a little political which would push you away.

Any additional comments?

Rudnicki's performance was great but the editing absolutely sucked making any editing very obvious and actually obnoxious. I can't ding Rudnicki for that.

Unrealistic characters and plot

The worlds best and brightest behaving like children and arguing about mission issues that would have been decided long before launch. Professional astronauts and scientists refusing orders. I couldn't believe it.

Rudnicki was great, as always, but not even Stefan could totally save this one.

Book 3 is off of my future list.

Absolutely AWFUL editing

This is a good story but the editing of the audiobook is very poor. There are frequent jumps in level, changes of the readers voice tone and at least one place where the same sentence was read twice.

There have obviously been a number of attempts at reading the volume and it's a slice and dice - but the recording settings and the acoustics of one of the versions were dreadful. A complete retake didn't stop someone from cobbling together a mess.

Plainly put, the quality control was non-existant. Someone should be shouted at... which is a pity because Stefan Rudnicki's performance was pretty good.

Nice story, leaden reader

Where does Return to Mars rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

On an A-F scale I'd give it a B or B-. It was a good story though it repeated several of the characters and elements of the first book, Mars. Unfortunately the reader spoke in a monotone throughout, which was a drawback.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The lead, Jaimie. I liked the concept of a Navajo astronaut, and his commitment to science rather than the commercialization of the planet.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

His voice was flat and inexpressive.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Neither, but I was drawn into it. The descriptions of the planet were vivid. The conflict between the powers back on earth was believable and the resolution was clever and satisfying.

The sexual tension was overdrawn and not really necessary. I can't believe that real Mars explorers with such personality flaws would have made it past the screening.

Recommended Thriller

This book is actually two books in one...the two parts are of course very interconnected, but I actually liked the first part a bit better than the rest. Williams has created a rather though and resourceful heroine, and the other characters are a little more one-dimensional, but that might be because you get to know the heroine very good in the first part.

The book starts out rather fast, and you will blaze through the first part in no time, but it slows down a bit and you get a little more mystery to all the action. You will however figure things out quite early. Unpredictable this book is not...

All in all quite a good tech thriller. The author has done his homework, and the book works rather well...recommended.

What disappointed you about This Is Not a Game?

I just could not care about the story....it made no sense. I read a book called Hard Wired by this author and enjoyed it the most. I could not finish this one, made it about half way....which was a bummer...I almost fell asleep driving home from the airport. Had to pull the pin.

What was most disappointing about Walter Jon Williamss story?

I just didn't give a damn about the character and the whole online gaming community approach to the story.

Did Jefferson Mays do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Why do so many people pass out 5 star reviews? People, on a five star scale....how the hell can this rate with the best novels in the world?
