    Publisher's Summary:
From one of the world's best-selling science-fiction writers....
The Intersolar Commonwealth is in turmoil as the Living Dreams deadline for launching its Pilgrimage into the Void draws closer. Not only is the Ocisen Empire fleet fast approaching on a mission of genocide, but also an internecine war has broken out between the post-human factions over the destiny of humanity.
Countering the various and increasingly desperate agents and factions is Paula Myo, a ruthlessly single-minded investigator, beset by foes from her distant past and colleagues of dubious allegiance...but she is fast losing a race against time.
At the heart of all this is Edeard the Waterwalker, who once lived a long time ago deep inside the Void. He is the messiah of Living Dream, and visions of his life are shared by, and inspire billions of humans. It is his glorious, captivating story that is the driving force behind Living Dreams Pilgrimage, a force that is too strong to be thwarted. As Edeard nears his final victory the true nature of the Void is finally revealed.

    Another great Story!!
This series has been great! The commonwealth is an awesome look at the potential of Mankind!
A truly great writer and a gray story!
    breathtaking story
has opened my mind to news ideas, I will recommend this to all my friends with similar interests.
    This book is corrupted
    Any additional comments?
This is a favorite book of mine, I have listened to it several times. I re-downloaded recently, there are now large chunks missing, including the end
Great book from a fantastic author
I loved Pandora's star. I still rate it amongst the best book's I've ever read, but I didn't like Judas Unchained. It didn't engage me much. I was a bit concerned the same things would happen here. I loved the Dreaming Void, and the characters and progression they (and The Commonwealth) had made in the intervening centuries. Thankfully, it didn't disappoint.
The narrator of this book is John Lee, a favourite of mine - albeit from non-fiction books - and he comes in for some unfair criticism in other reviews. Although he gets off to a slightly shaky start, it quickly gets much better, and I actually preferred his style to the one adopted by Toby Longworth, who tried to give voices to every character in The Dreaming Void and ended up with some rather dubious accents. The only criticism I have is the inconsistent pronunciation of names. One of the central characters and a key location are named differently in the books, which I found irritating.
    The Temporal Void (Unabridged)
John Lee has actually narrated the first book in the series, though not available here. Fantastic book and narration, cannot wait for part 3

Brian Aldiss' first novel. A story of a small tribe in a very strange jungle, who make unsettling discoveries about the nature of their world. Non-Stop is the classic SF novel of discovery and exploration; a brilliant evocation of a familiar setting seen through the eyes of a primitive. Published in the US as Starship.
Brian Wilson Aldiss is one of the most important voices in science fiction writing today. He wrote his first novel while working as a bookseller in Oxford. Shortly afterwards he wrote his first work of science fiction and soon gained international recognition. Adored for his innovative literary techniques, evocative plots and irresistible characters, he became a Grand Master of Science Fiction in 1999. Brian Aldiss recently celebrated his eightieth birthday and is still writing to ardent applause.

Rats, Giants, Mutants, Outsiders, Oh My!
I hesitate to call this good old fashioned Science Fiction, because that would suggest that since it was written in 1958, that it is dated. I believe this could easily have been written today. The only difference is that instead of 8 hours long it would be 28 hours long and have two sequels.
There is quite a lot in this 8 hours. You pretty much know from the start that this is a generational ship and the population has gone back to the dark ages. What you don't know is several other mysteries that get discovered at the end of the book.
Our main character's name is Complain and even though his people are described as primitives, there language is more of medieval England. Here is a typical exchange: "Keep a civil turn of phrase, Complain: your own carcass isn't worth a crust to me."
After Complain loses his woman, he joins a group of rebels, led by a priest named Marapper, on a quest. Marapper heads a religion that worships psychology. Jung and Freud are part of the trinity. Marapper's character of selfishness is down right roll on the ground funny at times. On their quest they run into Giants, Mutants, Forwards, Outsiders, Intelligent rats, telepathic rabbits and Moth Scouts.
Towards the end there are a couple of chapters of fighting and burning of the ship that seems to go on far too long and there is a scene where discovering how to open trap doors comes a little to easy for me, but this is minor. The ending is a surprise and very inventive.
This is one of the very few books were I gave the overall rating more stars then the story. In most cases I feel the story should be more important, but the narrator is so good, I believe he increases the value of the book.
    Great little sci fi book
An enjoyable read with a decent narrator. Non-stop is a classic generation ship yarn. We follow members of the Green Tribe who move corridor by corridor nomadically through the hulk of an ancient starship. And like any good generation ship story they progressively realize that their world is a lot more than they had imagined. Adventures and revelations ensue. It's a fairly short book (8 hours) so don't expect a lot of epic surprises or character development, but it makes for a speedy and fun read.
My only gripe was the narrator's "tensely" spoken character dialog. Really grated on my nerves with how often he chose to use it... I could see him sitting in front of the microphone with bulging neck muscles and madly quivering eyes.

    Le Guin at her best!
What did you love best about The Telling?
While involving the reader in an intriguing tale of a woman discovering herself on a strange world the main character discovers that stories are much more important than she ever realized. They impact both for her own past and the history of the planet she has come to.
Among the upper crust of Sci-Fi authors, Ursula K Le Guin lives up to her reputation in this book as she wraps you in multiple layers of intrigue, politics, religion and emotion.
    Tell me about it!
If you could sum up The Telling in three words, what would they be?
    Don't toss traditions
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Telling?
When the heroine and her nemesis realize their childhood experiences caused them both to reject their peoples' traditional values, and to rethink those decisions. The realization that life is not black or white, but many shades of gray.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    no
    Just Beautiful. Just Brilliant.
This may be the best Ursula K I've read since the Left Hand of Darkness. Beautifully written, incredible characters and a lovely transformation. Treat yourself. This is a marvel.
    Beautiful, Poetic, Moving!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Ms. LeGuin uses the english language with the same flare as Sandberg, or Twain. She paints landscapes and portraits with her words, creating people and places you can actually care about, while sharing their lives and adventures. Storyteller, Wordsmith, Poet, a truley gifted artist!
What did you like best about this story?
    visiting another world.
    Tough read
I am a long time Le Guin fan. The Telling is a very slow introspective examination of a society and culture through the eyes of a visitor from earth. There is very little action and with the exception of the main character, the listener really does not get to know the other characters in the book very well. The text concentrates on an examination of a planets society that has been perverted by exposure to off world technology and has turned technological progress into a religion of sorts, repressing the worlds native history and culture. Typical to Le Guin, her writing is fluid and poetic. I thought this story was wonderfully narrated. In the end, I struggled to get through this book. It never captured my full attention and I found myself wishing for something to happen or for the plot to move forward. I am hesitant to recommend it.

Pleasent, Complicated Space Opera - Very Enjoyable
During the reading of this self-proclaimed space opera, I admit to swinging from wondering why I was still listening to being enthralled. This novel is about robots that we humans create. Unfortunately for homo-sapiens, we die out and leave the robots in charge with human objectives and a streak of subservience. What ensues is a bizarre culture of slavery. Written in the first person by a female robot bot named Freya; the story twists and turns with multiple personalities, a complex plot, much intrigue and misdirection. It is definitely hard to keep it all straight sometimes as event sometimes move too fast and the point of view switches among personalities, so youll find yourself skipping back 30 seconds on occasion.
The narrator Bianca Amato did a very good job of handling all of the voice. Though she speaks with a bit of an English accent, she is pleasant and brisk with her narration.
This novel will appeal to a listener who is interested in rooting for all sides. You root for one thing, then another and another. By the time you finish you reassess they story and reflect. From this point of view, the novel make you think, think about a world humans created but are not manifest. I recommend this book it is different than I thought it would be; but I am still happy I listened.

This strange new feudal society carries on with normal business, free from the oversight and lordship of humans.
Freya is one of these cyborgs. She was designed to be a companion (to put it nicely) for humans, so she is humanoid in appearance and exhibits most human emotions and motivations. She was spawned from a mother named Rhea and has numerous sisters whose soul chips can be downloaded and uploaded to new bodies. Freya used to be a slave, but her family has purchased her freedom.
As a femmebot, Freya was designed to fall in love with human men, but she has never met one because she was activated after they had all died out. In this new world, there is no one for her to love and serve. Now obsolete, she lives a lonely existence in a modified shipping container on Venus, eking out a living by doing odd jobs.

Good to hear them all again..
It was wonderful to hear Jack, Gwen and Ianto again, but I wish I could say the story was better :( I am a diehard Torchwood fan, and this just didn't live up to what I expect from them. It was a good listen, but probably a one timer..
    Cleverly written solid performances
This is an enjoyable piece, it doesn't further the story of Torchwood or any of its main characters too much. Fans of Andy will enjoy it as he has a significant role in this tale. The opening is a bit confusing until the listener has finished the piece and then it makes far more sense. The plot revolves around a confused young woman that is arrested for shoplifting and found to have future tech on her when she is brought in. Andy gives Gwen a call and off we go. The core moral at the story is interesting and timely and the writing is interesting especially some of the young woman's dialogue. Anyone with little knowledge of Torchwood will be able to jump in as there is little if any reference to the hub etc and the story is largely self contained.
    Ends kinda sudden.
I am uncertain if this was the entire story or if there is a part two. A girl falls through the rift from the future to the present. The end. Was this all ?
    Wish it was longer!
This was one of the best of the Torchwood audios. I want more of asylum.
    Want More Asylum Stories
What a great idea. Not just hunting down aliens but integrating some of the less threatening ones into (humanoid-ish) into the population & the trials & tribulations that go along with that. I'm sure Jack, Ianto & Gwen could have some fun with that.

    Publisher's Summary:
In Colorado Springs, the Dominion sees to the nation's spiritual needs. In Labrador, the Army wages war on the Dutch. America, unified, is rising once again.
Then, out of Labrador come tales of a new Ajax - Captain Commongold, the Youthful Hero of the Saguenay. The ordinary people follow his adventures in the popular press. The Army adores him. The President is...troubled. Especially when the dashing Captain turns out to be his nephew Julian, son of the falsely accused and executed Bryce.
Treachery and intrigue dog Julian's footsteps. Hair's-breadth escapes and daring rescues fill his days. Stern resolve and tender sentiment dice for Julian's soul, while his admiration for the works of the Secular Ancients, and his adherence to the evolutionary doctrines of the heretical Darwin, set him at fatal odds with the hierarchy of the Dominion. Plague and fire swirl around the Presidential palace when at last he arrives with the acclamation of the mob.
If Jules Verne had read Karl Marx, then sat down to write The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, he still wouldn't have matched the invention and exuberance of Robert Charles Wilson's Julian Comstock. As told by Julian's best friend and faithful companion, a rustic yet observant lad from the west, this tale of the 22nd Century asks - and answers - the age-old question: "Do you want to tell the truth, or do you want to tell a story?"
    Members Reviews:
Excellent tragedy with very good narration
Julian Comstock is an unusual story for science fiction, a 16th century tragedy, presented in a 19th century style, set in the 22nd century. It's also a first person account written by a friend of the title character, which has the consequence of leaving much about Julian, and about the world in which the story is set, unexplained. If you're looking for an uplifting adventure story, or a geeky exposition on post-collapse technology, you might look elsewhere. But if you like a good story, beautifully told, check this one out. Although the stories and characters are quite different, the tone reminded me a bit of The Great Gatsby, particularly Fitzgerald's last line: "So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." The narration is very well done, though a bit melancholic, but it fits the nature of the tale. Like a previous reviewer, I really didn't want this one to end.
    Vivid characters and great dialogue
This was my first Robert Charles Wilson novel, and I can tell that his strength is in characterization and dialogue. The setting reminded me of Orson Scott Card's THE TALES OF ALVIN MAKER series in that it is a 19th century setting but a post apocolyptic idea without the doom and gloom of THE ROAD. Wilson's characters are well drawn with desires and motivations that are universal. Julian Comstock would have been my pick for the HUGO award.
    Interesting idea that falls short
The book jumps forward two hundred years to a world transformed by catastrophe into a 17th century-like landscape. An interesting idea, but the story is decidedly weak and the ending (most of the book) is both predictable and very disappointing. Scott Brick is usually a good narator, but here he slows down and introduces so much dramatic voice that it interferes and extends a story (maybe he was trying to save an otherwise mediocre book).

    True Depiction of the Navy
First off, I was a little hesitant to listen to this book because of the bad reviews but I took the plunge and it was worth it. Jack Campbell has served in the Navy and knows that navy life isn't very exciting. Campbell describes the day to day life a young ensign straight out of the Navy Academy. Campbell has also obviously read the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice) and the JAGMAN (Judge Advocate General's Manual) and the Manual for Courts-Martial because he depicts a very realistic court room environment.
The only bad thing I have to say about this book is that A Just Determination is a lot like the Caine Mutiny just in space, however I enjoyed this a lot more than the Caine Mutiny.
The only unrealistic thing is that one officer in the course of his three year tour of duty on board his ship would be involved in four separate court martials, but that's the only way to make it into a series and the whole series is amazing.
A must read for military, sci-fi, and lawyer fans.
Leadership is leadership, regardless of setting...
I should say up front, I'm a fan of John Hemry's novels, especially the Lost Fleet Series. I liked this one as well. This is the story of a young military officer (the fact that the setting is in space is totally irrelevant to the story) who ponders the meaning of leadership when his commanding officer errs in the use of deadly force. It's sort of a "Caine Mutiny" in space, but without the mutiny. The story also reminds me of the sad tale of the USS Vincennes, whose crew shot down an Iranian airliner full of civilians.
I have a couple of minor criticisms.
First, the wholesale application of US Naval tradition to a future space force is somewhat disconcerting as it gives the novel a bit of a split personality. I think Hemry must have realized this because he did a much better job of imagining a space tradition in the Lost Fleet Series.
Second, because the story is told from the perspective of a junior officer (and perhaps for dramatic reasons), the portrayal of the commanding officer is annoyingly two-dimensional. In my experience, the situations surrounding the tough decisions soldiers make when lives swing in the balance are never black and white. Likewise, leaders are neither good nor evil, just human beings who, when thrown into the breach, are equally likely to do good or evil. Bottom line: a leader's reality is much more equivocal and ambiguous than Hemry makes it sound in this story. That said, there are no heroes here, no happy endings, and that makes the novel readable.
    Law on a space ship
I enjoyed Jack Campbell's introduction to this new series, he tells how he came to write it.

    Publisher's Summary:
In the outer depths of the universe lies the Great Emptiness, where something dreadful lurks, hidden behind a great gravitational lens of dark matter. Something horrific that howls and writhes and rages across 300 million light-years of space - and is now heading straight for the Commonwealth and moving faster all the time.
One slim chance exists to avert catastrophe, and only Flinx can take it. Roaming the galaxy is a conscious planet-size weapons system, the legacy of a long-extinct race. As Flinx is the only one who has ever experienced mental contact with the machine, it is his job to find the powerful alien artifact and coax it into joining the battle against the behemoth from beyond.
So Pip and Flinx valiantly sail into the unknown aboard their little spaceship, which is immediately forced down for emergency repairs on planet Arrawd, home to less advanced sentients and therefore off-limits to space travelers. But what with Arrawd being very beautiful, and Flinx being Flinx, this particular rule doesn't stand a chance.
Now, Flinx is no stranger to murderous attacks and stalking assassins - evading them occupies most of his waking hours - but to be besieged by hordes bent on worshipping him as a god? Worse still, escaping this fate is going to be as impossible as fulfilling his dire mission. What's a deity to do?
    Members Reviews:
    a side story
I've really enjoyed the Pip and Flinx series, but this book seemed to be more of a side story away from the main theme that the other books have been leading us along. I didn't enjoy this book nearly as much as the others, and was impatient for it to end or come back to the series story line of the last few books. Maybe it is just me, but this is NOT my favorite book of the series.
    Running for Flinx
Flinx and Pip are my favorite novels. I have read or listened to them multiple times. My favorite part is when Flinx is all excited to explore and thinks his interacting is safe. Seeing new places and meeting alians sounds awesome even though some are terrifying.
    another winner
    Any additional comments?
I love Alan Dean Foster's writing style. Its hard to go wrong with his stories.
    Disapointing
What would have made Running from the Deity better?
The Flinx and Pip stories seem to have become nothing more than a formula that is repeated over and over. This one is worst than most because Flinx seems to have become blind to the consequences of his actions. there is very little in the book that advances the story of the great emptiness. From the reviews of the next couple books I think I'm not going to bother with the rest of the series
Would you ever listen to anything by Alan Dean Foster again?
    Maybe
    Sy-fy adventure fun
Another installment in the adventures of Pip and Flinx. You should listen to the series in sequence to get the full effect. The series allows you to follow the life of Flinx as he mature, while enjoying a stand-alone adventure in each and every book. The books are fun, nicely paced and filled with light hearted humor. Genuinely worth the listen if you are into sy-fy. This particular book in the series also takes a poke at humanities views on cults, while mixing in some of the pitfalls of politics in a humorous manner

Original, entertaining, One of the best in the series. For lovers of the series this one is a must
love the Flinx & Pip adventures.
I thought the narrator did a great job. Lot's of tense points. Flinx & Pip get into trouble but they always remain true to each other. Kiss taking the rescue into her own hands then pouting at the loss of her knife was my favorite part.
    More action, less endless angst,please
I get bored with the amount of time spent by Flinx in repeatedly obsessing over himself.
    another favorite
    Any additional comments?
I love Alan Dean Foster's writing style. Its hard to go wrong with his stories.

War is just one damned thing after another.
David Valentine is a Cat- a spy and covert ops agent fighting the aliens who have all but conquered Earth and made it their feeding grounds. Under a fake identity, he's infiltrated an enemy gunship as an officer, and done things that burn his conscience to gain the position of trust he needs for his mission to retrieve a weapon he knows nothing about. When his backup doesn't arrive as planned, he has to improvise, and winds up working with pirates and rebel forces with agendas of their own. To get their cooperation, David must help defeat their oppressor.
When he gets to his destination, he finds a stranger ally still: a Kurian turncoat who his Lifeweaver kin have dubbed 'The Once-ler', and who had a history with David's father. Taking their new weapon out for a little field test, they wind up sparking a full-scale rebellion. And the trip back is no picnic either, with betrayals and naval battles and armies of sentient rats.
    I love EE Knights books.
I love this series, even took it overseas to Iraq with me. keep up the good work.
    valentine's rising
The Vampire Earth series goes from strength to strength with themes drawn from the US War of Independence, the Bible, a thousand Western novels this is on one level good old fashioned escapism with a contemporary twist but EE Knight's vision of strong characters male and female, black, white and brown is a kind of Obama era heroic fantasy and none the worse for it.
    Great stuff
