A great SCFI adventure thats not dated by time
I bought and first read this book in its first printing back in the eighties and now it's available on audio. It's wonderful to find old treasures like this brought to another generation to enjoy, Unfortunately Jack L Chalker passed away in 2005 but his visions still live on in his many books.
Lords of the Middle Dark still stands the test of time if you are able to forgive minor issues like the fact that computers no longer require large spaces
The plot and character development is rich, and one could imagine a future like this could actually exist.
A group of scientists fearful of mankind destroying its self created a computer called the Master System to keep mankind safe. Master System took over control and basically de-populated Earth by moving moving most of the humans to other planets. Adapting people and planets but still keeping them mentally if not physically "human" to do so
Earth, and the small population's living there are ignorant of Technology. China has reverted to Warlords and peasants, America is basically a Native American Indian Reservation. etc
Earth is protected museum of what culture and life was like before Technology in each major culture.
An few people that show promise are chosen to learn and have access to the Technology controlled by Master System. Every so often these people must give up their technological lifestyle and return to their native people and lifestyle for a while. Master System basically uses these people and native leaders to run the various planets whilst keeping and eye over their shoulders ensuring that the planets under its control remains in the stasis of a pre-technoligal it has imposed.
Master System isn't malevolent, it's just following it's directive to protect humankind from itself as programed by its creators.
Master Systems creators fashioned 5 rings that could be used to control Master System and directed it to ensure they were always in the hands of humans but with most of humanity altered physicality to be able to live on the planets they now live on, any search for the rings is a daunting almost impossible task.
This book introduces us to this world and to an American Indian called Hawks who stumbles across information about the five rings, when on his "leave" however such knowledge is basically a death sentence. Hawks needs to evade Master System and gain allies . . . whilst keeping his "tribe" safe . . .
China (a Chinese Warlords daughter) story is interwoven in the book. Both gain allies whilst they battle the system to survive in any way possible . . .
I don't believe reviews should include major spoilers so for those who read this to find some . . .

    What's real and who's who?
Narrator was so bad I switched to reading.
So many myths and beliefs in the story to make sense of the unexplained. Plenty of twists and turns, nothing is at it seems...Nobody in this book is really who we think they are; not Mike, not Mualama, not Lisa. So who are they? More questions than answers.
But wait... there's more! The Truth!
    What a comeback
Eric brought the story to life! Can't wait for the next book. It's so addictive!
    BEATING A DEAD HORSE 2
    What disappointed you about Excalibur?
Same to say as his Area 51 Grail... yuk
What do you think your next listen will be?
    Not area 51 - 4, 5, 6, etc...
Would you be willing to try another one of Eric G. Doves performances?
If priced cheap with whisper sync.
    Wouild not waste a credit.
Only the $2.99 kindle and $3.99 made Area 51 books 1, 2, 3 worth trying. Books 4, 5 not even worth the $7
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Couldn't keep going after repeat of story line of book 1, 2, 3, 4
    Any additional comments?
    See area 51 grail.
    You just gotta love Turcotte
Where does Excalibur rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
of the area 51 series, excaliber has to be up there.
What other book might you compare Excalibur to and why?
it's like the last 3 in the area 51 series.
What about Eric G. Doves performance did you like?
i did eric's low, almost military-like voice. he changes his voice just enough w/ the other characters, but not too much to be annoying.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    heavens no. who does that?
    Any additional comments?
this whole series is well worth it. you have to pay attention to catch all the details, but i wouldn't say it's a difficult listen nor is it terribly "intelligent". it's kinda like watching "independence day". it's fun times.
    Story keeps rolling...
Finally back in the swing with Dove's narration perfectly balanced. Mayer excelling in his ability to capture the reader with this ongoing story of man against overwhelming technical superiority. So glad that we have more to come.

"We don't need no stinking lawyers"
After reading some of the spotty reviews about the previous Area 51 books, I was hesitant to purchase this. But I was in a mood for some military scifi. Whereas this is in no way a John Ringo style military sci-fi book, it is a fun read. I listened to it in "one go". It is a bit slow in the beginning (delivering all of the necessary setup and background), but I found it fun throughout and especially loved all of the 70's pop references (e.g., Warren Zevon and M*A*S*H inspire 2 of the sobriquets of the team members.) In that vein, I liken this to an "A-Team" romp with aliens (or "fireflies" the entities making it through the rifts) and better guns (and an actual plot.) The book isn't as cheesy, but it had some amusing dialogue and one-liners and was just fun. Despite the female team commander (Moms) and the female teenager local asset (Scout), the book didn't have any romance thrown in -- which is refreshing! Besides, how creepy would it have been for romance to blossom between a fellow team member and one with the moniker "Moms"? And sure, Scout was a little too good to be true, but hey, they are fighting alien entities, so suspension of disbelief is in order. So, I just had fun with the character, which is unusual for me (I generally HATE the teenage/child "add-on" characters.)
The narrator differentiated the players well and did equally well with female and male characters, giving personality to them. And, continuing with the 70's theme, his voice reminded me a bit of Lee Majors at times (but in a good way, reminiscent of "6 Million Dollar Man" and not of his recent hearing aid commercials.)
I recommend this to anyone wanting a light military sci-fi read.
Was optimistic, was wrong. Just bad.
I'd never willingly be harsh or callous about a book, not publicly anyway, but I really did not like this one. It was not what I expected, which in this case is not a positive point. While it was clear there was some knowledge or research on a lot of the military and weapons information, the writing is not up to snuff.
I'm usually always skeptical about a book when I first start, don't know why, but I almost always come to like it in the end. This would be the first book with Audible I genuinely disliked. The writing was just not good. Early on 'American' was referred to as a language...it isn't.

    A great short story
This was 57 minutes of pure entertainment. The story is well written and the characters & storyline are fun and interesting. Wayne Farrell does a great job of catching the readers attention and holding it throughout the narration. The characterisations are distinct. I'm looking forward to listening to more.
    A great teaser read
This is a really interesting quick read. It has shades of Sherlock Holmes and a bit of a Steampunk feel. It definitely caught my interests and I am curious about this series. This book is an excellent appetizer to tempt a reader into trying one of the full length novels in the collection.
I listened to the audiobooks narrated by Wayne Farrell. He does a terrific job of keeping the character's voices distinct and consistent. I loved his steady pace and engaging tone. I am definitely going to look for more of his work!
Disclosure - I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions and ratings are my own.
Wainwright, can I snoop through your lab?
Would you consider the audio edition of And They Called Her Spider to be better than the print version?
Yes. I like Wayne Farrell's rendition of James Wainwright with his scientific mindset and distaste for frippery.
Who was your favorite character and why?
James Wainwright, because us nerds need to stick together.
Which character as performed by Wayne Farrell was your favorite?
Since the narrative was through Wainwright's eyes, I will go with him again. Farrell pulls off this character very well.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Two men bound by condescension fight evil with brains & style.

    Short story
Minor romance with a sci fi hallucination thrown in featuring a short battle with boring action sequence. Very short though so easy to read on a lunch break.
    Multiverse
This was a great short story!! I wanted to read more and know more about the future and world the author was describing.
    Amazing short story
Sarah A. Hoyt's (Darkship series, Shifter series, and more) "Wait Until the War Is Over" is an amazing short story! I love the story within the story, and how the second ties in with the first. I also love the parallels to the decisions we make. I highly recommend this short story :)
    Which scenario do you believe?
Eurydice and her father live in an old Victorian mansion, or do they? Her mother's funeral had been several days ago and Mom never told the daughter that dad had some form of dementia or did he? OR did they live in the far future fighting an insect alien race and the 2 of them had been injured? You tell me which.
Wait Until the War Is Over
Interesting concept. I could identify with t he main character. Well written. Kept me interested right up to the end.

The Scavenger species are circling. It is, truly, the End Days for the Gzilt civilization. An ancient people, organized on military principles and yet almost perversely peaceful, the Gzilt helped set up the Culture 10,000 years earlier and were very nearly one of its founding societies, deciding not to join only at the last moment. Now they've made the collective decision to follow the well-trodden path of millions of other civilizations: They are going to Sublime, elevating themselves to a new and almost infinitely more rich and complex existence.
Amid preparations though, the Regimental High Command is destroyed. Lieutenant Commander (reserve) Vyr Cossont appears to have been involved, and she is now wanted - dead, not alive. Aided only by an ancient, reconditioned android and a suspicious Culture avatar, Cossont must complete her last mission given to her by the High Command. She must find the oldest person in the Culture, a man over 9,000 years old, who might have some idea what really happened all that time ago. It seems that the final days of the Gzilt civilization are likely to prove its most perilous.

    Hmm... Ok.. But not great
I've read most of Banks's work by now, and this is a little underwhelming. After the depth and breadth of Surface Detail, this leaves me feeling a little cold. Banks as always paints sweeping vistas of alien awesomeness and really digs in with amazing concepts and high tech culture. But one doesn't ever really like his characters, only the Minds seem to have any depth to them.
It won't be the last Banks i read, he does keep me hooked enough to continue. But I hope they get better rather than worse from here.
    Love it
Where does The Hydrogen Sonata rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    Top 10%
What other book might you compare The Hydrogen Sonata to and why?
Any of the Culture series by Banks or the Polity by Neal Asher
Have you listened to any of Peter Kennys other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. Even better, excellent accents, consistent interested delivery.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    yes
    Any additional comments?
    Don't miss it
    Good bye culture
Another amazing installment in the culture series. I didn't like them all, but I liked this one. I really couldn't put it down towards the end.
Another great story from a Scifi master
What did you love best about The Hydrogen Sonata?
With the Culture novels I always particularly enjoy the Ships and they are central to this story too.
What did you like best about this story?
The interaction between the humans and Ships
    Which scene was your favorite?
The one in which the full name of one of the Ships is revealed - perfectly done with maximum impact and enjoyment :)
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I would say that I was most effected by my favourite scene but at many points I found myself pondering the implications of the events and their impact on protagonists and myself in their place alike.
    Sublime
In The Hydrogen Sonata Iain M. Banks - as an outspoken atheist - has finally gotten around to using his Culture universe to explore faith and religion.

    I'M WEALTHY, THANK YOU.
A HEARING AND VISION IMPAIRED WAITER WALKED BY
I think I have had that same waiter. Have you ever been in a CONFLIRTATION? Through the first 18 chapters of 33, I was ready to give this five stars. ASK NO WHAT THE F@@@ YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU, ASK WHAT CAN YOU F@@@ FOR YOUR COUNTRY. The humor was smart, dry and often. The story was interesting. The language maybe a little rough for some, course if it is, you probably didn't buy this book to begin with. The slang is a future slang, you have never heard before, but since Abnett, writes so well, he does not have to explain what things mean, you will automatically know. With out giving anything away, let me say you will never get as embedded as this guy does. I was very impressed.
I DON'T RUN FROM FIGHTS, BUT I DON'T MIND RUNNING FROM STUPID.
Around chapter 19, we get into a slug fest. I have to admit that I have never been a fan of fights, rather it is done with fists, guns or huge tech machines. It is not that I am a tree hugger or anything, I just find them boring and lacking of imagination. If they go on for too long they distract from the plot. This slug fest lasted for pretty much the rest of the book. I went from really enjoying a witty, smart book to bang bang shoot'em up. My mind wondered. Those familiar with Abnett, I believe know him to be an action writer and so will probably love this. This was my first Abnett and I am willing to give him another shot if I find a non-shoot'em up book.
I HAVE THE HORRIBLE FEELING THAT SOMEONE TOLD YOU, THAT YOU WERE CHARMING AND YOU BELIEVED THEM.
    Great action-packed, realistic scifi
EMBEDDED is an absolute knockout of a book. Abnett is a gifted action narrator. His combat sequences explode into life. His use of metaphor to set a scene painted clear pictures for me, and made things more believable by imprinting modern-day moods and beliefs onto the futuristic setting. Without a doubt, Abnett's future is one of the most logical and believable extensions of our current world I've ever read.
I listened to the audiobook. The narrator read way too fast, but I adjusted to it quickly enough that it didn't ruin the story. The narrator was talented and had a great delivery, but the speed bordered on ruining the experience.
If you're the fancy type to believes it's not real science fiction unless there's a deep message where the author tells you what's wrong with our current society, this book might not be for you. EMBEDDED is a balls-out thriller that paints a realistic future picture without shoving a belief system down your throat.
    Score another for Abnett
If you aren't familiar with Dan Abnett's work for the Warhammer series of books you should check them out. Mr. Abnett has a gift for characters and story telling. This one is no different.

    Not your average door-knocking zealots
Would you consider the audio edition of When Gods Fail II to be better than the print version?
Definitely. I think the audio helps capture the raw emotion of the characters in this post-nuclear war setting. The narrator is dry, coarse, and really helps to intensify the scenes.
What other book might you compare When Gods Fail II to and why?
The Road (McCarthy), but not quite as dismal. Alas Babylon (Frank), but add more violence. Any post-nuclear war novel, but Lowhim adds a large dose of the human element and thoughts to make this anything but an adult novel.
Which character as performed by Michael R Welte was your favorite?
The main character, whose perspective and thoughts help shape the novel's world.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
This audiobook was too long to listen to all in one sitting; however, it was an immersive read I wished I was able to.

Award-winning voice actor Christian Rummel delivers a thrilling performance of the post-apocalyptic thriller Ground Zero, the second book in Jessica Meigss series The Becoming. His resonant voice creates an intimate atmosphere for this disquieting tale of death and destruction. One year has elapsed since the outbreak of the deadly Michaluk Virus. Ethan Bennett and six other survivors have forged a close relationship and live together in a safe house. Their fragile world is threatened when a strange woman appears, asking for help to reach Atlanta. Chaos ensues.

the ending made up for the rest of the story
    Any additional comments?
first of all, let me say i'm a sucker for zombie books. i'll give any z-book a chance. i downloaded the becoming 2 b/c the first book was entertaining enough. my biggest caveat was the "believability." yes, i'm using the word, "believability," when reviewing a "zombie" story. LOL
well after listening to the becoming 2, i'm still annoyed by the "believability" of the characters' actions. what do i mean? glad you asked! LOL ok...the dead come back to life and start eating people. you lose friends and family. it's a really emotional time. i get it! i feel you. LOL so if you lose you s#!t, i get it. but if you keep losing control of yourself, i'll drop you like a bad habit. sorry, that's just the way it is in a zombie apocylapse. i might not shoot you, but i'll definitely coldcock you, especially if you're my friend, and ESPECIALLY if there are zombies around! LOL
this is what i don't get! ethan was a cop, cade was an idf soldier, and brandt was a marine. why the heck can't they keep their cool? they're supposed to be some of the most disciplined people. throughout the story, they lose control of themselves and yell and holler at each other- e.g. in their safehouse, on the highway, etc...
now, i don't know about you, but i "believe" i would be as quiet as i could in my SAFEHOUSE and on the highway, especially if i was on foot! these outbursts in the worst possible places affect the "believability" of the story.
ok mike...what about the rest of it? alight, i'll tell you if you hold your horses! LOL the becoming 2 picks up about a year after the first book ends, ethan and his team have become somewhat famous for saving people.
