Publisher's Summary:
When Steven Glass's third grade teacher asked his class what they wanted to be when they grew up, Steven's classmates shouted the usual answers: "A fireman!" "A teacher!" "The President!" When his turn came, Steven said, "When I grow up I'm going to be the last man on Earth."
Warning signs don't come much clearer than that.
Nearly thirty years later, Steven Glass is a billionaire. Surrounded by groupies, yes-men, investment opportunities and glamour, all Steven really wants is to be alone.
Really, really alone.
In secret, Steven builds a personal sanctuary nearly a mile underground. He vanishes from public life, goes off the grid. He's finally alone. Well, except for an artificial intelligence companion named after the only girl he ever loved.
There, Steven plays video games, heckles the news, and waits for the apocalypse. When the end doesn't come soon enough, Steven goes to work. He still has billions of dollars to spend - and there must be something he can do to accelerate the coming storm.
Wrestling with his own destiny, unaware of the young stowaways who have discovered his underground paradise, and battling his duplicitous A.I. companion at every turn, Steven Glass struggles to create the reality he has always hoped for - at the expense of the future of every single living human being on Earth...
Unless a pair of eleven-year-old children can stop him and save the world, that is.

A Worthy Sci-Fi/Apocalyptic Novel I Couldn't Put Down
Wow - just finished this novel last night, and I truly couldn't put it down. I read it out loud to my husband (a very reluctant reader), and he wants to know if the author has written more books. Although I downloaded the Kindle version for free, it's one I would have paid for. I'm a fan of the great sci-fi writers, and I will be disappointed if the author is a one-time wonder. In fact, I'd like to see a sequel to this one.
This book is a different take on the apocalypse - written from the viewpoint of an artificial intelligence created to serve the man who engineers the end of the world. We also read the viewpoints of the man himself and of two preteens who stumble onto the man's secret bunker.
No spoilers here - just read it. Although I could have done without the profanity (especially since I was reading the book out loud to hubby and those words are not in my vocab), they're used for effect: the man's entry into madness and the children's reactions to a horrifying situation.
The ending was satisfying. That's all I'll say. It was exactly the way I'd hoped it would turn out, yet it wasn't entirely predictable.
Now to search for and buy more novels by this author...his freebie accomplished what I imagine he and the publisher wanted: a new group of avid fans.
From loner to lunatic - Steven's journey is one you can't put down.
Zoom zoom. I sped through this book. No, seriously â it took me less than 24 hours to barrel my way through this nifty little piece of sci-fi. I just couldnât put the book down. Who doesnât want to learn every last thing about the guy who ENDED the WORLD?
