It is 2056, five years after an influenza pandemic wiped out nearly half the world's population. Local level government and law enforcement have stabilized society to the point that 12-year-old Tharon Trace's biggest concern is being used as a pawn in her fickle friends' quest for popularity. But all that changes when Tharon and her two best friends, Helm Harris and Kaid Walker, are tangled in a web of murder, abduction, and government conspiracy. No longer a pawn, Tharon, Helm, and Kaid must escape and survive to block a strategic move that, if left unchecked, will destroy the fragile freedoms and security her friends and family have left.
Is it a coincidental fluke that thrusts Tharon in the middle of danger or is it her destiny? If destiny, then who is orchestrating her fate?

Absolutely. Out. Standing.
I can't emphasize enough what an incredible read this is. I read all kinds of books, from sweet and sappy romances to gritty drama to sexy romps to paranormal and my latest fave, Jack Reacher books.
Sneaking Suspicions is a fantastic blend of YA, thriller, mystery suspense, and just imagine Jack Reacher about two hundred pounds lighter and two feet shorter and female...and yeah, Tharon Trace is my new twelve year old hero.
As a child, we drove around a lot, moved a lot, and back in those days I looked out the window of the car instead of at a phone screen like kids do these days. I used to look out the window and imagine certain banks of trees or gulleys by the road or rock outcroppings in a field would be a great hiding place if I ever needed one. Imagine my utter shock and delight when the kids in this book, Tharon, Kaid and Helm had to do just that! And in my old stomping grounds, no less.
A fan of Louis L'Amour westerns in my youth, I was doubly pleased to learn that tracking and trailblazing were another crucial element to the plot.
The villains are scary, icky and driven.
The good guys are decent, upstanding and human. The parents want what's best for their kids but make mistakes. The kids are bright and courageous, but still kids too.
The future Hinds has created is just different enough to be plausible, but not so unrecognizable. In fact, current events in the nation sometimes make me wonder. Hinds took that wonder to the next level in this freakily realistic and terrifying journey into the 'what if' category of plausible sci-fi.
I didn't look to see what she categorized the book under. She could classify it as Christian, because characters in the book briefly but appropriately seek for divine help, but the reader almost doesn't notice the references because they are so naturally included in the lifestyles of the characters.
The plot is fast-paced and gripping. Logical sequence of events. Great imagery and great characterization.
I just can't praise this story enough. Yes, it kind of does this cliffhanger thing at the end, but I did that in my own book too. As long as she doesn't keep us hanging too long for the next installment...
Sneaking Suspicion that this is the beginning of a great series
In the not too distant future, in a world that has been devastated by pandemic and political discord, Tharon, Helm and Kaid are drawn into a world of terror and intrigue by witnessing a murder. Kidnapped and taken miles from their home, the search for them begins.
