Schoolteacher Charlie Matthews returns to his hometown, looking to regain a sense of community, reconnect with friends, and settle down. It looks like his dreams have come true when paramedic Josh Campbell attends an accident at the school. It's love at first sight, and a romance begins.
But Josh's reluctance to come out to the brother who raised him puts pressure on their fledgling relationship. While Charlie understands Josh's concerns, he can't help growing impatient. After all, Charlie came out years ago.
It's not until Charlie confronts his own parents and realizes he hasn't come to terms with their rejection that he fully understands what Josh has to lose. But Josh is Charlie's hero, and Josh will do anything to prove to Charlie that to be part of a family, he doesn't need his parents.
Members Reviews:
Sweet, fluffy, low angst romance
Any additional comments?
This a sweet, fluffy, low angst romance with a really entertaining narration. Joel Leslie provides distinct character voices and an enjoyable listening experience.
Charlie Matthews and Josh Campbell are just two of the cast of likable characters in the story. Truthfully everyone, with the exception of Charlie's homophobic jerk-off parents, is likable in this story.
I almost feel like I'm damning this with faint praise, but I'm not, really. There is nothing wrong with it, but at the same time there is nothing that exciting about it either. It's okay. Sweet, enjoyable, and a compelling listen. It also sets up Josh's brother, Andrew's, story, which looks like it will be delightful.
If you are looking for an entertaining audio listen of a fluffy romance that doesn't have unnecessary angst or miscommunication, this is a good choice.
FANTASTIC!
I can't wait to read book two. Love everything about it! Writing and reader! :)
Charlie turns out to be a Hero as well
Would you consider the audio edition of Charlie's Hero to be better than the print version?
Didn't read the print version but I'm pretty sure it would be just as good, I immediately read book 2 which is not out on audio and quite enjoyed it as well.
What did you like best about this story?
The way Charlie is the voice of reason and sort of a leader in the relationship. But when Charlie has a crisis of faith, Josh becomes his hero, hence the title.
Have you listened to any of Joel Leslies other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not so I'm not sure, but I loved this book so I'd go for one of his narrations again.
Who was the most memorable character of Charlie's Hero and why?
Andrew. He was a conundrum for me for a good majority of the book, but then by the end you learn that something you thought was perceived incorrectly. As I said, I was so ready for his story, I immediately got book 2 to read, Andrew's Promise.
Any additional comments?
Josh Campbell and his brother Andrew have always been close. Having lost their father when Josh was just sixteen, Andrew put his life on hold to care for his brother. There is a part of himself that Josh has always kept hidden from his brother though, for fear of how he would react. Andrew is the only thing he has left of family and he refuses to loose that.
