Alienation, exile, and redemption
"Three Fugitives" by author Nat Howler is an uplifting and insightful tale about extreme alienation and the tumultuous path to redemption experienced by three societal outcasts, an abused boy, an orphan girl and, most rejected of all, a pitifully clumsy and self-doubting goblin.
The three characters have suffered hatred, discrimination, humiliation, disinheritance, brutality, physical and mental abuse, and finally, flight and exile into a strange and hostile world.
Thrown together by their common misery and dire predicaments, they progressively gain insight into their unique talents and humanity (even the maligned and downtrodden goblin comes to realize his special abilities), as they forge bonds of friendship and then love.
They confront and steadily overcome the negative forces arrayed against them, embodied by sinister individuals and powers, as well as their own biases and ignorance, by developing the strengths of unity, character, self-reliance, cooperation, which grow stronger as they define their purpose, and move towards freedom and decency, both personal and communal. The pinnacle of their progress is expressed in the struggle for survival in the last chapters, as they are forced to seek refuge in the dreaded Forest of Doom, an unknown and terrifying place which will test their worthiness for the struggles ahead.
The themes are universal, the prose (and poetry) special and very pleasing. The fertile mind of Mr. Howler is evident in the story line, characters, imagery and symbols used. This all makes for a suspenseful and satisfying read.
A solid read; thumbs up for Howler
Three Fugitives is a well written book with a solid story line. Some of the characters are likable, some easy to detest but either way, they are believable; no captain perfect on this team of characters unlike many other books of this genre. I found it very refreshing to have a hero who actually falls flat on his face at times. In addition to a well rounded cast of characters I found this book to have enough action to keep me interested without being over the top. Over all I would give this book a double thumbs up and certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a solid read.
