Excellent short story -- Nice Character Develpment

This short story fits in very nicely with the entire series. The story centers around one of the prime players -- Eve Levine. Armstrong adds to her depth while creating the instant tension needed in a short story. The action is secondary to what you learn about Eve in particular; there is no romance. If you are reading the series, this is a definite must listen. I do not recommend you listen if you have not read the entire series; which or I should say witch is well worth your while.

Great novella, but not worth the price.

Those of us who know and love Eve will certainly enjoy this novella, but it's not worth the price for this very short story.

I wanna date Eve Levine!

Excellent novella; been in love with the character idea of Eve since "Haunted". The Fates sure can be bitches and challenging, but Eve reciprocates, excelling in diplomacy at times. Well done Kelley Armstrong!

Love Eve and Otherworld series....but..

I was so excited to listen to this, as I am in love with The Otherworld series. But the narrator sounds NOTHING like I would picture Eve? She sounds like an older woman, almost grandmotherly and it just ruined it for me!!! If this was easier to get ahold of I would have read it. 5 stars for the story , 3 for the awful narrator!

I'm a Huge fan of this exciting seriers and While I found the previous book, Dead as a Doornail a little less memorable than the first 4 books for some reason, Definitely Dead picked right back up full steam and left me craving more. If you're a fan of the series, you've probably already read this one and so I don't have to tell you how it left me craving more. I'm sure you know exactly what I mean. If however, you haven't yet read this series, then what are you waiting for.......

Definately read it!

Though not my favourite, this is definately a must. I really like this one especially because we're (finally!) introduced to many new characters (my favourite are Amelia and Quinn). As in Club Dead, there's a lot of action and there's romance. And poor Sookie learns something about Bill she'd rather forgot.

She has the WORST accent and just ruins the book entirely! She isn't a bad narrator but she cannot do mens voices and accents!

Yes I got mad and turned it off. I have the written books, thought the audiobook would be great for bed time - but the narrator turned me off it completely. I will read the darned things myself!

FANTASTIC

I'm not sure the other reviewers actually listened to the prose of this novel...perhaps they're frustrated and/or unpublished writers themselves?!?! As for SCENT OF SHADOWS, I found the writing to be excellent. Yes, this is a debut novel by Vicki Pettersson and her voice is NEW and FRESH and EXCITING. Jo, the strong female protagonist, isn't a vampire or werewolf, or shapeshifter, she's a gutsy, gritty, streetsmart chick who has just found out she's also part of the world of underground superheroes! IN LAS VEGAS! What an incredible setting for an Urban Fantasy.

Look, if you want more of the same in this genre, look up vampires or zombies. But if you want a new voice in literature, one that you should hear, then download THIS. You WON'T be disappointed!!!

Drama in Vegas

A heroine with a power-mad father, absent mother, and a past rape that tore her budding-but-true-love romance apart is enough drama for even the most demanding hanky-loving audience. Too bad, then, that Pettersson felt the need to pour still more on with adjective-laden, emotionally wrought hyperbole and descriptions as empty as they are florid. Add that the author manipulates her heroine to hesitate when she clearly shouldn't, apparently so that her loved-ones can suffer still more and you have a story I just can't credit even before you get to the hoky zodiac superpowers.

And somebody please inform Pettersson that killing someone with superpowers who has threatened to kill you and everyone you love at his earliest opportunity, after a long battle in which he actually *has* killed someone you love, doesn't constitute "killing in cold blood" even if he is unarmed at that particular instant.

Just meh

I am going to give this one the benefit of the doubt and give it 3 stars.

There is some good action and I like where the author is going with the characters. On the other hand, the mythology and plausibility needs a LOT of work.

My biggest problem with the book seems to be in the hiding in plain sight logic. It just does not really add up. There is are things that seem to conflict with others. The explanations are convoluted a bit ridiculous.

I do like the super hero element, so I will give the next book a shot.

extremely interesting story, spoiler alert

Loved this story. It keeps you on the edge of your seat until the end wondering what is going to happen next. I found 1 inconsistency when Warren tells the main character that by becoming her sister she will be protected because her father works for the shadow clan and as such her sister would be off-limits. yet the shadow clan attacked her sister twice, killing her the second time. other than that it is a well put together story that ,ain't Ainsworth your interest.

If you liked the first book in this series, Stalking the Unicorn, you will love this sequel. It is filled with humor and creates a great world in the alternate New York.

The narrator has a unique voice and is well suited for the book.

I look forward to the third book in the series, Stalking the Dragon, I just wish the other John Justin Mallory short stories were collected and released in audio format...

a good stab

A fun read a little long in parts and full of corny humor but a nice blend of fantasies tong and check, and throw back to the old 40’s detective novel

Not quite as good.

This one isn't as good as the first. I really would have liked a little more dry JJ Mallory humor. I think it's worth a listen but the first is definitely the better of the two.

Worst Audiobook ever

The image makes this book look like a gritty noir detective novel. It isn't.

The dialogue is flat, irritating and anti-funny. The plot is ridiculous. Doesn't even work on the level of Myth Adventures or any of the "fun" fantasy books out there.

The narration is just awful enough to constantly remind you that you wasted your money on a dumb dumb book.

It was like being seated next to your most annoying relative -- the one that won't shut up -- and being unable to escape.

Truly an awful story, badly delivered. You may look at the cool cover and the title and buy it anyway. But don't say I didn't warn you...

Oldish feel to the prose

Is this book deliberately period--50s? I don't know. I did not enjoy it as much as I had hoped to. The tongue in cheek humor was too broad for my taste.

Really enjoyed listening to it

I love this type of alternative world mystery and Resnick spoofs the mystery and fantasy genres very well in this book. Every cliche is in this story, typically turned on its side.

I bought this book when it first came out and am glad to see that Audible now has it.

Absolute necessity!

This is just pure fun!

I downloaded this one on a whim as I was looking for something fun and different, something a touch 'Robert Asprin' (now if they would only make the M.Y.T.H. books into audio here!) and I was very pleased with this one.

This book is very much like one of those old detective movies/radio shows and the author sets a fine and fun setting and the narrator does an excellent job with his voicing of the characters.

Nothing serious here at all, but if you are looking for a fun, light and interesting listen I would recommend this instantly. I've already downloaded 'Stalking the Vampire', the follow up to this series and am eagerly awaiting to have the time to listen to it.

The city is a lady . . .

If you don't know about cheap detective novels, you might want to read up on them a bit. My father loved Mickey Spillane and Boston Blackey, or more recently John D. McDonald's, Travis Magee. That is the tradition that Mike Resnick uses to write about the hidden Manhattan. "Stalking the Unicorn," really does do a great job at taking a humorous jaunt. The genre isn't about deep character development, that's not the point of this kind of literature. It is more about just enjoying the story about someone's experience. It is like buying someone a beer to hear a humorous story. You don't need details about their life, it is just a story.

Peter Ganim does a fine job at reading. Through the entire book I kept thinking his interpretation of the main character's voice sounded familiar. Then it dawned on me, Steven Wright. If you like deadpan humor, you are going to love Ganim's reading.

silly fun

this book is a lot of fun. I at first didn't care for the narrator, but he grew on me. The real issue I have with the book is the pacing. It drags in the middle where it seems to lose the plot and turn into a tour of New York and it's strange and interesting residents.

Still, this is a fun listen, and is followed up by a superior sequel. I look forward to the third book in the trilogy.

Biker Werewolves!

No this is my first. He did a great job voicing all the characters but I loved his voice for Diego.

When I saw the blurb for The Seventh Sons I was intrigued. I've always been fascinated by the biker gangs because they are such a close group and very secretive. This sounded awesome and I'm so glad I got the chance to listen to it.

Maxim is a detective and has taken an interest in the local biker gang. Something seems off with them and he knows that no one else will try to get to the bottom of it because they are all afraid of them. Maxim was such an awesome character. He is struggling with personal issues but is not afraid to stand by whats right, even if everyone is telling him to stay away from The Seventh Sons.

Diego rolls into town on his bike only to end up in the local police station after a brawl turned deadly in The Seventh Sons club house. Maxim takes Diego to the station and learns some startling truths from him about The Seventh Sons. Diego is my favourite character, he is so mysterious and has a dark past that we learn about slowly.

Anyway, The Seventh Sons is one heck of a ride. From its well developed characters and action packed plot, its a must read. I started listening to it and had a hard time putting it down. Its such an intriguing and thrilling book and one that will stay with you. The author put his own spin on the werewolf lore which I loved and whats not to love about Werewolf Bikers!! I really look forward to reading more from these characters and highly recommend the audio of this!

This one kept me interested and there were quite a few action bits in it. The story line went up a few levels on the previous ones. Not keen on the narrator though

Good Story that was poorly Narrated

Would you try another book from Kat Richardson and/or Mia Barron?

I have read the other books in this series by Kat Richarson and look forward to her next books.

I was not impressed with Mia Barro's narration. She did a good job capturing Harpers voice, but her male voices reminded me of voices that you hear with robots in cartoons.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The male characteristics were lacking an individual "voice" they all kind of sounded alike in pitch and tone. They sounded more automated (computer like). There was no real emotion brought forth with their voices. For some reason Carl's voice bothered me the most.

Knockout stuff

Kat Richardson's Greywalker series is a wonderful concept, skillfully plotted and written. She gives a great idea of the atmosphere of Seattle (it is a rather...odd... city), and her heroine is always interesting and engaging. My favourite character has to be the ferret Chaos - Richardson obviously loves Mustela putorius furo, and that love comes over in her writing. I look forward to more of Harper and the Grey.
