A actual review from someone who bothered to read the book. Now there's a concept.

Unlike most of the so-called reviewers, I actually read the book.

The book is geared toward teens. I'm not the target market, but I like having ideas of gifts for that age group that don't involve tiny screens and earbuds.

Ms. Clinton was able to take a lot of complex data about economic and social issues, break it down into plain English, and present it in a way that will engage teenagers. Her bias--and everyone has one--is a lot less apparent than many authors I've read. The information she presents is easy enough to find elsewhere if one wanted to wade through reams of verbose and bland reports. It's one of the few books on these topics out there for this age group that talks to them instead of at them. Her writing style was a little chatty for my tastes, but probably will appeal to teens.

Her whole point is that teens should be informed participants of the world around them rather than just parroting some pundit's regurgitated talking points. (That point seems to have been lost on some adults who use product reviews to catcall--probably because they didn't read the book.)

Ignore the political reviews

Great book with very relevant topics for today's kids written by a hyper-intelligent woman.

Shame on Amazon for allowing political- and religious-based reviews to be published.

A Great Read for Young Teens!

This is a great young teen book! So many books today aimed at young teens are full of age inappropriate themes, such as sex, and this book keeps it clean and adventurous. I have started to read it to my preschooler a chapter at a time and she is absolutely in awe of the adventure of Taylor and Butch. I can't wait to see her reaction to how the story ends! Hadaway creates a believable world that jumps off of the pages and pulls the reader in. I hope she brings this world to life again in further adventures!

Great adventure, characters and imagination

I am still trying to wrap my head around this story. It is impossible to guess the out come from beginning to end. Great adventure, characters and imagination. Once again Linda Hadaway has out done herself!

A fantastic read

Beyond The River by Linda Hadaway is the story of two boys who adventure finds when they least expect it. This was a light and engrossing read. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Good Fantasy for Tweens

I received a free audiobook from the author for an honest review.

Keeper of Reign is a fantasy for middle school age readers. It is full of action and kept my interest throughout.

There is not much getting to know the characters before things start to happen. Jules, the main character, is the oldest of five children and is suddenly responsible for the safety of all of his siblings when his mother disappears. It is too dangerous to stay at home so they set out to find their parents or their grandparents, who have also disappeared.

This story is definitely geared toward younger readers. As an adult, I wanted more character development. I still dont know exactly what the role of the Keepers is, just that theyre very important in this world and they have to have their books.

The narrator, Will Jenkyns, did a good job of pacing and pronunciation. I was able to tell who was speaking when and that is sometimes difficult in an audiobook. His voice also goes hand in hand with a fantasy.

There are a lot of twists and nonstop action in Keeper of Reign and I definitely recommend it for middle school age readers.

Twisted Trees captivating heart warming must read

Would you listen to Twisted Trees again? Why?

Twisted Trees by Sandy Latka is one of those books I could listen to again and again. In fact I have and each time I enjoy it just as much is the first time I listened to it. The reason I keep coming back for more is because all of the characters are so well-written, they feel like people I known or could've known. Everything in this book is so beautifully and richly described that you feel as though you are there.The story itself is so heart warming beautiful sad suspenseful and intriguing that you are instantly made part of their world. The writing style used by this extremely talented author makes you feel as though you are in the story, seeing what the characters see, feeling with they feel and experiencing what they experience. You won't be able to only listen to this book once!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Twisted Trees?

This book is about Love, Life and Family. Journeying through the years of happiness sadness deception joy hardship love pain failure and triumph. There are many memorable moments in this book but I'm not going to share them with you because you need to listen to this book! I hope you enjoy unravelling the twisted tree as much as I did. All I can say is this book will keep you guessing until the very end and will leave you wanting more.

What about Sandy Latkas performance did you like?

What I really enjoyed is that Sandy Latka it's not only the narrator of the story that she is the author of it as well. Because she is this books author he has a connection to the story and its characters that no one else could match. I really love it when the author of a book narrates their own story. Sandy gave a wonderful performance that was truly enjoyable to listen to. I believe she would make a fantastic narrator for any book but you can really sense her love and connection to this story. I also really loved Sandy's beautiful English accent. It suited this book so well. I hope she narrates any future books she writes.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Every family tree is twisted, some twists are just very well hidden.

Mysteries of Brettenwood

This story starts out with Erik Christianâs friends Marty and Danny convincing Erik to do their homework for them. Kristina Glynnis doesnât like that his friends are always doing this to Erik. Erik and Kristina were next door neighbors. One of my favorite lines from the story. âSometimes, when the wind picked up, the branches would sway as if urging me to come in, to see what lay beyond and discover its secret for myself.â Erik was curious about what he had seen. He ventured into the woods to see if he could see the woman or the animals. Erik discovers a black piece of glass shaped like a mountain with incredible details. The old wizard of the forest who had died. It was said he practiced evil magic, and cast spells and curses. People also said that he kidnapped children from Candlewood for his vicious experiments. What mysteries await discovery in Brettenwood Forest? The Candlewood Fall Festival was soon to start when Mrs. Bronteâs Antique Shop was broken into. The only thing missing was a crystal ball.

My favorite character of the story was Quincey Holmwood an explorer who had been deep into the forest and made it back and lived to talk about it.

When the black glass mountain that Erik found goes missing, Erik starts to experience strange happenings. When Erik gets lost in Brettenwood Forest, Quincey Holmwood rescues him. Another of my favorite lines. âNo one took the time to explore the forest, so of course there would be secrets waiting that proved everyone wrong. There could have been dozens more throughout the woods for all anyone knew.â And one more. âWhat I heard next Iâll never forget. While we spoke, a low moaning wail, like something crying in pain came from somewhere close, followed by another, then another. Each of them slowly rose in pitch. The higher they got, the more my blood ran cold.â

Both Erik and Mr. Holmwood meet up with the witch. Mr. Holmwood disappears in a cloud of red smoke.

David Blank is a master storyteller and his book Mysteries of Brettenwood shows the reader a tale that will stay with you a long time after you finish the book. In the story youâll find ghouls, massive spiders, vampires, mountain wyrms, swap ogres, pixies, and dryads, and other creatures of the night.

A fun read that I rated a solid 5 stars.

Gripping story.

I started reading this book quite a few years ago with a friend, however the copy we had borrowed had the last CD missing so I was really pleased to find that this book finally became available on audible. How would you feel if you found out that the father who had raised you for 13 years was not your real father? This is the story of Juliet Cheney, her dream is to be an actress saw her and her friend decides to audition for a theatre production of northern lights. She obtains the leading role, however the excitement of getting the role is tempered by everything that is going on in her home life. This is a story of courage and determination and asks the question do we really know who we are. Although this is a book that is designed for teenagers, it does ask a lot of interesting questions, I really really enjoyed it and that narrator Claire Corbett really brought the book to life. She is a fantastic narrator and he's really good at different voices giving each character their own voice and personality. This was a fantastic book and I really enjoyed reading it.

Run with the Boy.....

The Boy Who Ran was a good little read. It is definitely a book for the younger readers but it held my attention and my interest. I did enjoy the historical placement of the story....the boundary of eastern woodlands and the prairies of the current United States a few thousand years back. The author certainly did his research with regard to the tribal connections of the early Americans. The passage of the boy through his growth in a strange tribe gives the reader a good idea of the daily routines and traditions of the past. The nameless boy finally earns his welcome into his adopted family through years of trials and loneliness. Through perseverance to learn and survive the world around him, he shows worthiness to the tribe and most of all to himself.

The writing is smooth and easy to follow. The author uses good descriptive passages to help the reader realize life thousands of years ago. some of the situations may seem a bit far fetched to the older reader. However, the preteen to early teen may find true adventure and a good grip on our early history. I found it easy to put myself in the young boy's place and wonder how well i would do if put in the same situation. I would recommend it to those with a sense of adventure and are looking for a relatively quick but interesting read.

excellent read

The story is a well told coming of age tale, told in an engaging way. If there is a bit too much telling rather in showing in paragraphs of descriptions, it probably won't discourage good readers. Author intrusion in a couple of places is distracting, but the research is thorough and is well incorporated. All in all, it is an excellent read. Highly recommended.

Captivating and intriguing book.

What a delightful and intriguing book. The story is so well written full of insights into the Indian way of living It follows and Indian boy from the time of his village being attacked to his adoption into another tribe. The echo's of his mother's last words to him...Run..Run..encouraged him to run like the wind. The book also gives very descriptive techniques used to track and hunt as well as insights into the Indian philosophy of living with the animals. A captivating. can't-put-down book for young adult and adult readers.

An Engaging Book that is Highly Recommended

This book will captivate the reader. The story line provide deep insights into the survival instincts of a young boy who survived a massacre, saved by his dying mother, grew up in the wild, adopted by kind village folks, and became a responsible adult. Young readers, parents, teachers & adults will find this book to be filled with essential life's skills, adaptation, wisdom and responsible living, for themselves, their environment, humans & animals alike. The elements of love, kindness & compassion, portrayed in the work is commendable. Nice!

Good middle school choice

I work with children who learn differently, and I can see them relating to this boy.
