    Missed michael
Definitely a transition book. Important things happen, and you have the sense michael Washington Jr is there, but his perspective from the first two books is sorely missed. Unfortunately, I don't think it can be skipped. But I look forward to the next book, and was delighted by the preview.
    Great book!
This book is definitely interesting with the fact that Michael is in a coma, but somewhat present in the book. I love learning more about all of these different characters through him and knowing more about their stories.
You will definitely want to get right onto book 4 when this one is done!
    Loved it!!!

  • Darla Decker Hates to Wait Audiobook by Jessica McHugh

Title: Darla Decker Hates to Wait
    Author: Jessica McHugh
    Narrator: Robin Jill
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 6 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-23-15
    Publisher: Evolved Publishing LLC
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Teens, Ages 11-13
    Publisher's Summary:
Evolved Publishing presents the first book in the Darla Decker Diaries series by Jessica McHugh, with Darla Decker Hates to Wait. This edgy young adult novel follows a girl's tentative journey toward adulthood.
Patience is not Darla Decker's strong suit. Surviving sixth grade is tough enough with an annoying older brother, a best friend acting distant, and schoolwork. After adding instructive kissing games and the torturous wait for a real date with her biggest crush, Darla is perpetually torn between behaving like an adult and throwing temper tantrums.
Games of flashlight tag and the crazy cat lady roaming Shiloh Farms in a "demon bus", serve as distractions during her parents' quarrels and her anxiety about show choir auditions. Yet the more Darla waits for her adulthood to begin, the more she learns that summoning patience won't be the hardest part of being 11.
A frank and funny look at the path to adulthood, Darla Decker Hates to Wait begins a journey of love, loss, and the nitty-gritty of growing up through Darla Decker's eyes.

    Step aside, Judy Blume.
Young adult fiction, especially that written in a realistic setting and from a female perspective, can't escape the comparison to iconic author Judy Blume. Like most of my peers, I grew up reading those novels, and have been skeptical of drawing parallels to them in other works. In the case of McHugh's first installment of the Darla Decker Diaries, the comparison is warranted. This novel has the potential to be to a modern audience what Blume's works were to girls of the 70s and 80s, and its blunt honesty and relevant topics make it the preferable choice.
Darla herself is a quirky, eminently flawed, and utterly lovable heroine, so truthfully written that you find yourself feeling what she feels, cringing at her missteps and cheering at her victories. You laugh alternately with her and at her, and you feel for her as she makes mistakes and-- with variable success-- navigates the rocky path of tweenage life. She screws it up regularly, but the refreshing thing about Darla that is so encouraging (for an audience of any age) is that even the worst embarrassments and the most shameful disappointments pass. People forgive, and people forget, and like Darla, you can take what you learn from those situations and use them as opportunities to grow.
One specific situation Darla encounters that really resonated with me was her attempts to navigate her changing relationship with boys. I found myself cringing at the beginning as her male peers followed the norms of society and treated her as a sexual object. I cringed even further watching her begin to believe and play out the role they had assigned to her-- it reminded me far too much of my middle school self. The best part is that, as you progress, Darla begins to take ownership of herself and her choices- she begins to ask what SHE wants rather than what she should do to be something others want. Watching her grow this direction as the novel progressed made me want to stand up and cheer out loud, as well as applaud McHugh for depicting this change in a realistic, non-preachy way. Like any true pre-teen, Darla is probably not finished compromising herself to please boys, but she is beginning to realize that her life is her own, and that she should call the shots. I loved that about her.
This novel will appeal to a wide age range.

    Publisher's Summary:
This amusing audiobook helps listeners recognize the ways that unchecked stress, inattention, and multitasking can undermine their ability to handle all the competing responsibilities of life. The examples in this book, cautionary tales compiled from Dr. Geri Markel's Managing Your Mind Newsletter, can help listeners analyze distracting situations, gain a healthy perspective on the causes and consequences, and appreciate the humor in the human foibles we all share. Each parable illustrates the ways in which stress and attention slippages can wreak havoc on a person s work/life productivity.
Dr. Markel and co-author Jane Heineken categorize these stressors as Demons of Distraction such as Technology, Stress, Fatigue, and Others and suggest strategies to reduce the angst and negative consequences of distractions faced by professionals, employees, parents, students, and older adults. Markel and Heineken invoke both amusement and empathy to guide listeners toward a more mindful and pro-active approach to avoiding some of the Goofs and Glitches of contemporary life.

Fabulous conclusion to an incredible series
This was a stunning conclusion to a really addictive trilogy that I've been anticipating forever.
I had read Twinmaker and Crashlander almost a year ago, and as they weren't available at my library, I didn't have a chance to reread them before Hollowgirl came out. As such, I had forgotten a lot of what had happened, and it took me a few chapters of this book to orient myself to what was going on and what a lot of the terms referred to. The main thing I remembered was that I had been insanely angry about the cliffhanger left open!
This is best classified as science fiction due to all of the futuristic and technological aspects to it, yet I'd also recommend it to anyone who enjoys dystopian literature.
Despite my terrible memory, I was on edge throughout most of this book. There was always some point of tension or conflict going on and figuring out how these would be solved was immensely stressful! In the best way, this had me gripped from the beginning.
I loved the conflict between various characters, especially characters who were almost the same. It was intriguing to see how people with a very similar set of memories could change and evolve from each other, and to see how a knowledge of oneself could influence the world.
There was less world building in this book than in the previous two, but I still found it extremely fascinating to envision the world Williams had created and the problems it created. Throughout the Yard and the outside reality, inventions such as glitches and fabbers made this world complex but also magical in an almost comprehensible way.
This brought up a lot of questions for me about defining human life and understanding what it truly means to be alive. Though it wasn't deeply philosophical, I enjoyed how thought provoking this was. The Consensus Court and a few of the moral questions that were thrown in were additionally intriguing.
I honestly do think that this trilogy could have been just as successful as one stand alone book, but the myriad of problems that came in a kind of chain reaction were all believable and though I was scared they might, they didn't ever read as tropes.
I don't often buy books these days, but this was well worth every cent. I highly recommend Twinmaker and its sequels to any science fiction or dystopian lover.
Great ending! I really enjoyed how they wrapped up ...
Great ending! I really enjoyed how they wrapped up the series, and how they wrapped everything up.
