Just Bearable

This author was really pissed off at women when he wrote this book. He makes every female character appear either selfish and self-centered or whining and definitely stupidly angry. The story is OK and the narrator is very good. I recommend this audiobook but be warned about all the female characters.

A wonderful surprise

when I got this book I was expecting an average"monster" book. the fact that it was was also apparently the author's first novel did not inspire me either.

I was very happily surprised. the story moved quickly and kept me guessing all along. the characters were authentic and believable.

in fact, I immediately bought the author's second novel and preordered the third.

in short, I very much enjoyed this book and strongly recommend it.

Beast and Northwoods

These comments address two audiobooks by Bill Schweigart released by Tantor Audio in late 2016. The Beast of Barcroft is about seven hours in length, Northwoods just over ten. Both are narrated by Will Damron.

Didnt like: Narration is laboriously slow, ergo set Audible application to 1.5 - normal speed, in addition to Damrons soft voice, will put you to sleep regardless of scary moments. Although theres little trouble discerning who-is-speaking-to-who, there isnt a uniqueness to voices. They all sound similar, male/female. Plots are not very creative. In Beasts, an unknown, but scary, creature is terrifying a small town and good guys figure it out. In Northwoods, the same batch of good guys save the day again from an equally scary creature.

Liked: The hide-under-the-covers moments. If you like the horror story genre, these fit the bill - shape-shifting, ferocious coyotes and wolves and hyenas, bloody zombies, glowing-eyes traverse the pages. Action scenes are exciting.

That said, some imagery is a bit confusing. The literary visions of Schweigart leave the reader to imagine quite a bit. In the horror genre, sometimes this isnt all bad.

The books are not identified as a series - although they should be; there is no doubt you should read Beasts first. There is also no doubt there will be subsequent novels, as book two - Northwoods - ends abruptly with the line Were going to Jersey.

An excellent horror novel, now a great audiobook

The best compliment I can give That Which Should Not Be is that its the only novel Ive ever read three times (four counting the audio version). Thats how good it is.

Built around a series of chilling tales recounted by the novels characters, each is self-contained and enjoyable in its own right. Yet these individual stories contribute in ways not immediately foreseeable to the overall plot. Its a classic kind of storytelling, and author Brett J. Talley pulls it off masterfully. In each of the novels composite narratives, he builds dread-filled anticipation, and pays off the reader with harrowing action.

Audiobook narrator David Stifels style melds perfectly with the authors storytelling. Stifels delivery is precisely the voice one would expect of late 19th century men hesitantly sharing the horrible things theyve seen and endured. This is the first audiobook of Stifels Ive listened to, but based on his performance here, I will be checking out more of his work. (And certainly the audio version of TWSNBs sequel, He Who Walks In Shadow, which Stifel also narrates.)

TWSNB is a Lovecraftian horror novel, meaning it borrows from the mythos created by early 20th century horror writer H. P. Lovecraft. For those unfamiliar, Lovecraft is credited with creating cosmic horror. In Lovecrafts telling, at some point in the ancient past these massively powerful elder gods called the Old Ones were cast out of our world. Their return would pretty much mean the end of the world, and for that reason a lot of Lovecraft-inspired fiction revolves around human worshippers foolishly trying to awaken their favorite Old One. You neednt be a Lovecraft fan to enjoy this novel, though if you are youll notice more than a few Easter eggs.

In Lovecraftian fiction, a protagonists powerlessness relative to the Old Ones can be taken as shorthand for humanitys cosmic insignificance, yet Talley rejects this nihilism.

It is the morning after the storm. Thick fog covers everything. In the stifling, claustrophobic atmosphere, Howie and his group head out for supplies.

I love that RR Haywood follows "a logical path" in some ways. It's predictable only to keep the story familiar and relatable. But then he adds the genius...he includes unexpected and realistic conflict between main characters! Its been like this for almost the entire series and I love it! *** Give Joe Jameson a chance *** Initially I was not happy with the change in narrator...then I read that Dan Morgan refused to continue this series. Joe Jameson stepped up to continue one of my favorite audio series of all time, so I felt that I owed it to Howie & Co. to start fresh and give Joe a chance. By the end of this book, I realize that Joe is an incredibly talented actor! His voices for EVERYONE are better! IMO, Dan Morgan's Dave was the only voice better...That said, Joe's "Dave" is far more realistic given who Dave is. We got used to Dan's more human sounding Dave, which made him so likeable. More great news: Joe is such a pro that he has taken the feedback and made some changes to Dave's voice going forward.

Please give Joe a chance and let the story continue!Ultimately, another great addition to the series! Enjoy!

Bring back Dan Morgan

The story is spot on. I have been a fan of The Undead from the beginning. Dan Morgan narrated the first ten books, and brought the characters to life the way they were written. The new narrator ruins the story with his subpar narration. He also makes Dave sound like a simpleton which he is not. Don't mess with Dave. Redo book 11, 12, and 13 with Dan Morgan or I will be reading them instead of listening to them with audible, and this is the series that got me to sign up for audible.

Creepy

This is not my usual paranormal reading. It is more of a ghost story and if it were a movie I would have watched part of it through my fingers, haha. I purchased this book on sale and it is the only book in the series that I have listened to. Admittedly, that is not the wisest on my part but I still enjoyed the book, the mystery, and who done it. Even though I liked this book and am glad that I listened, I doubt that I will listen to the other books iin the series.

More a "head" book, not so blood and guts. The narration is just right, and is Ms Hvam's usual superb job. This book is sneaky. It lures you along until you are suddenly checking the locks and wanting a warmer sweater. The people are people, not characters. You feel embarrassed with them and frightened with them, and want to check on their safety. One fault is Amelia's "too stupid to live" behavior in some instances. This series hooked me. I want to know why Devlin is such an ass, what's up with the mother and aunt, why Amelia is always is left out in the cold, what is with the family history and "gifts". Oh this book, and the series, is a tease for the next bit of information about Amelia. All that is outside the current mystery or investigation going on in each book. I will be reading this series and checking on anything else the author writes.

Thrill Ride

In The Sinner by Amanda Steven's the character Amelia finally has embraced who she is. I adore whom Amelia has grown into, despite her being extremely fearful in the last book. In this book she plunges head long into another supernaturally touched mystery.

This book in total was a great listen and the author thrilled and chilled me, but at the same time left the scratching my head. The head scratching would reveal spoilers which I won't do. I felt the ending came out of left field.

For those who love Devlin, he is absent from this book. I know it was hard on this reader too, but the author left Amelia high and dry and nursing a broken heart. The book starts about a year after the Devlin dump. Which was the most unemotional break up in history. As a reader I know how much Amelia love's Devlin but no real emotional reactions.

Disappointed

I truly enjoyed the Moving In series but didn't like the narrator or halting speech. This trilogy was not nearly as interesting or creepy and the story seemed disjointed. However the narrator was much better. I would like to see this narrator do the other series. I would also like less casual profanity which I don't think is necessary.

Scary!!

There is a house in nearly every town that stands abandoned and just left there. Well, the Boylan house is one of them! It has stood for centuries on Meeting House Road, New Hampshire. It's a house no-one dares to enter, and if they do, they usually don't come out. Also every year, around Halloween, boys seem to go missing in or around the house, never to be seen of heard from again. Just what is going on?

Well, Mason Philips is intent on finding out what is going on. When he was a boy, on Halloween, himself and his friend decide to call to the house on a dare. Mason swears that a trap door opened in the roof and something pulled his friend into the house. Nobody believes him though and he goes through life remembering the house and wanting to see if it was just a young boys imagination. He goes back to try to find the truth, and what he unravels was shocking.

This was awesome!! So creepy and scary and perfect for this time of year!! This is the type of book that would work well read at a camp fire. They are perfect little bite sized bits of spooky.

Character wise, I really liked Mason. He has always thought about the house from his childhood and is finally in a position to find out more about it. During his research, he meets a lovely librarian, a police officer that is willing to help, and even his estranged Uncle, who has already dabbled with the house and the evil within. This ragtag group of people may just get to the bottom of what lies within the house.

Plot wise, it's a really short read but packed with chills, thrills and enough of a spooky atmosphere that it will keep you on the edge of your seat. This author is fast becoming one of my go to ones for a short scary read! He knows how to tell a great story.

Thom Bowers read the book well. He had plenty of different tones and inflections to make the story thoroughly enjoyable.

This trilogy will keep you listening start to finish. The narrator does a wonderful job voicing the Boylan spirit as well as the rest of the characters.

As usual Lana is a quirky, likable and flawed character. This series has taken a little more serious turn with the last two installments, which I enjoy as I don't want my heroine too easy breezy. The story line stalled a little during this book, but the ending easily made up for it. Making an enemy out of Death should make for great stories to come!

ENJOYABLE. GOOD CONTINUATION TO SERIES.

Interesting and exciting. The plot is good and I am glad Lana ground her mate. Unexpected turn of events and the beginning of who are the villains and who are the heroes are getting clearer. Angela Roquet is a good writer and Hollie Jackson performed the characters very well.

This exciting Ride Continues!

Our heroes face more dangerous monsters while running from good guys who mistakenly blame them for the disease. Basic evil humans try to take everything they can for themselves. Dom and his crew are attacked on all sides as they move ever closer to finding a vaccine and discovering who caused all of this and why. I can't wait to find the answers with them.

Absolutely amazing!

All of the narrators were good but the ones who played Carey and Katelyn were definitely my favorite. Carey and Randall's relationship made me laugh so much and Katelyn had such a great character development. I couldn't stand Jackie, she was a bad friend, and I felt so bad for Meryl, my heart went out to her.

fantastic second book in the series

if you enjoyed The Unnoticables you'll enjoy this, more of the same giving context to a few charitcers. Hurry up book 3!

A Bit Fillery

Brockway's characters and their narrators are as spot on as ever. But the story as a whole feels like it only exists to arrange whatever is coming next. Which is okay. Just as long as whatever is coming next is as freakin' sweet as The Unnoticables.

In an effort to keep their business empire afloat, the Stokers have turned their ancestral family home into an inn, and this week they just happen to be hosting a murder mystery event.

Harper and Jared are game to play, but when a real ghost shows up and a dangerous storm slams into the island, things spiral out of control. There's a murderer in the house, and Harper and Jared have to find out who it is before another body drops.

Jared doesn't want to suspect his friend, but no one is off limits. When the truth comes out, two murders will be solved and Harper and Jared will be in an entirely new place in their relationship - that is if they can survive long enough to get off the island.

It's all hands on deck for another ghostly mystery, and danger is the name of the game; unfortunately so is betrayal.

I enjoy this series for the most part

I enjoy this series for the most part. But got a little tired of the hopping into bed at the drop of a hat. It seems that Harper and Jared's relationship is based on sex. And then you throw Zander into the mix just hopping into bed with them is ridiculous. If I was Jared I would have said 'No Way'. No boyfriend would stand for that. And shouldn't. If I had a 'Zander' I would never allow him to climb into bed with me and a boyfriend. Really?. These people are adults for gosh sakes! And now I started book 3 with hopes that someone has grown up a little bit. Nope. Some high school boyfriend (10 yrs ago) shows up and tells Jared he's going to win Harper back. Sounds like High School to me. Tone down the 3 in the bed, it's ok he's my best friend. can't have a relationship without him part of the story. I like the ghost thing. but move things along. Give Harper and Jared something other than bubbles,soap and sex, to build a relationship on. OH! And Molly just needs to tell Eric off. LOL! Happy reading everybody!

Repetitive once again.

Too many repeated phrases. There is the constant I .... again. The author needs to stop doing that. It's very distracting and annoying. Also, she uses the expression "deadpanned" constantly. That is also very annoying. The last thing I didn't like is the nickname for Harper, Heart, that just is so amateurish. I could've come up with a better nickname than that. The author has some changes to make in her next book. It's getting very predictable and boring.

Wonderful Mystery and Characters

For mystery lovers it is the perfect vacation. A week in a mansion hotel located on a small island, with a murder mystery event to fill the time. Only Harper finds a ghost, and a real murder to solve. This murder was truly fascinating and heartbreaking. But I missed Harper's sidekick Zander, who only played a small part in this one as Harper was on holiday with her boyfriend. None-the-less it was a great story.
